Welcome - you'll find that EVERYONE will go easy on you here.  It's the friendliest forum on the web.

RYs sound good to me - although you'll struggle to find a bad pickup...  I'm a big fan of Nailbombs, as many here are.  I suspect that you'll also find Cold Sweats recommended for what you're after.

Tele sound in a neck NB..?  Interesting...

Mark.

I can only recomend you a bridge pickup, since i never played a bkp Neck.
so, my advice you be a Nailbomb Neck
i posted some clips of it here on the players section
www.myspace.com/thyresis
and www.youtube.com/wfd666

Thyresis: the bolder guitar is a nailbomb in a charvel fusion deluxe. the thinner is a JB. in an ash bodied esp mii deluxe.

in my videoclips page, search for the tERRORIZER - FEAR OF NAPALM COVER
it was done with the Nailbomb through my 5150
Hope it helps

Tim is the Master, so I'm not going to argue with him :) However you wouldn't be posting if you didn't want alternatives.

I'm not great at matching tone to pups, but I was thinking Nailbombs too, certainly the neck.

Maybe an Abraxas bridge?

If Tim suggested a Rebel Yell then go with that - he is very good at picking pickups for people.
Did you ask him about the neck pickup as well? It might be that a RY calibrated set might be right for you. If not then I think you'll hear a lot of love for the Cold Sweat neck - the only CS I have is in the neck of my 8-string, and it's pretty much the nicest neck pickup I've ever heard - loads of character and really smooth.
One last thing - I reckon you'll be happy whichever one you get - I've never heard a bad BKP.

the tone you described seems to belong to a cold sweat neck, with few doubts!
i prefer the nailbomb neck, maybe, but they're completely different. nailbomb has got more presence, more high mids and - in my opinion - a better clean sound. having never played a  tele i can't tell if it has got a similar feel, anyway.
the cold sweat is smoother and a bit warmer , but retains an impressive note articulation... maybe i'm wrong but i think it's much more PAF oriented (though clearer), and definitely more scooped. not in a cheap metal-sound way, don't get me wrong...
i love both, it's hard to suggest one of them in particular! i hope my answer has been useful anyway...

just for the sake of curiosity... how did you end with a set of EMGs to play blues??  :)

here you can hear my cold sweats in a little blues rock tune

here is a short solo with overdriven (and cleaned up with volume knob) neck nailbomb, in the beginning of the song

and here is my GREAT pickup shootout... :) other clips coming very soon!

You can't do much wrong with the advice given here and I can't add much other than reminding you to get four conductor wiring and a five way switch for the "tele-like" neck cleans you're after.  This way you can do some coil taps or parallel wiring.

Jonny is a man of great justice for posting this:

As for the neck pickup thank Antag for these:

there are still a couple of days between me and my holy diver set, but from what i know both HD and NB (holy diver and nailbomb... sorry but abbreviations are usual here... :)) should be relatively similar to the JB... NB is surely a bit hotter (and brighter, i'd say)
i don't think you'll regret buying a nailbomb set, anyway!

I would have thought you would want either RY or CS to cut through the mahogany. If its a thick mahogany, then maybe even rule out the RY, but not very sure on the specs of your guitar

I replaced SD JB & Jazz in my Eggle Berlin with Holydiver set, the HD bridge pup is very close in output  to the JB, only it sounds so much better, clearer tighter, better highs and like all the BKPs that I have tried cleans up better, the neck pup is  one of best sounding neck pups that you could find really clean, great for big clean neck tones, it's not a super powerful pup if you need more power you may well need  Nailbombs or CS.

+1 on the Rebel Yells or Cold Sweats.

It really depends on the individual guitar, your set-up and the way you play. The guy is playing with 10-52 gauge strings, wants to have good definition in drop-D and already plays through a fat sounding amp. Very simple advice: don't go for bass heavy or thick sounding pickups. You might like a thick sounding tone, but that certainly doesn't mean you need thick or bassy heavy pickups.

I'm playing in standard tuning with 10-46 gauge, together with a bright sounding Les Paul (LPC) and a bright sounding amp. I needed fat and dark pickups instead of bright pickups to get the best tonal balance out of my guitar. You can't ignore your own set-up, guitar and playing style if you want to achieve a certain tone with different pickups.

I think the nailbombs would be a little too high output. And honestly, I'm leaning more and more towards alnico magnets instead of the ceramics. I'm leaning towards the HD's, but I'm keeping the CS's in mind.

Well, The HD's have slightly more output than the Nailbombs + they're more compressed in the mids/highs. They are dark and smooth pickups; if that's what you're looking for.

If Tim suggested the RY then go with that. You can drive yourself insane trying to second guess which one will be best. Either that or just buy every humbucker BK make :) A few of us are working towards that principle...

Some of us have even reached it and now are working on the single coils!
