Well everybody knows I like Winger...

Cherry Pie by Warrant is, I think, one of the greatest pop (or pop metal) songs ever written.  But that's not particularly embarrassing.

I do like quite a lot of '70s disco music (from the days before dance music was made by computers).  Such as You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester and the utterly awesome Boogie Nights by Heatwave, which is, honestly, one of my favourite songs of all time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-V9P03APl4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-V9P03APl4)

There's probably loads of other stuff which escapes my mind just now...

Seriously, I think if you'd geniunely be even the slightest bit embarrassed to say you like any particular music then you should probably punch yourself in the face until you aren't such a little sheep anymore...

In the spirit of the thread however :lol: ;
lots of people would probably expect me to be embarrassed by liking The Sugababes and ABBA and all manner of disco and pop and AOR-rock. And lots of people certainly scoff at the fact I have TOTO tattooed on my feet.

EDIT: Tom, whilst I've only heard the lead single, it would suggest the new Lily Allen album could be a cracker. That song wipes thefloor with the majority of things tat get mentioned in the now listening thread, in my book.

I feel no guilt over any of this stuff, but...

I agree with Twinfan and others, Abba - superb stuff (I even like the Mama Mia dvd that the missus forced me to watch ).

I am and always have been a big devotee of The Bee Gees (along with Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash, and so on, their 60s and early 70s stuff was my BIGGEST early musical influence).

Possibly going against popular opinion here, but still no guilt, I also rate Cliff Richard big-time (I agree he's a bit sickly to listen to talking though...).

And I love all things McCartney... (including the Frog Chorus...)

Finally, still no guilt here, I have a certain appreciation for, not sure what you'd call it, it is kinda 60/70s country based ballads. For example:

"Honey" - the Bobby Goldsborough version, still sends the good ole shivers down the spine when I even think of the last verse...
"No Charge" - I can't remember who had the hit, but it was well cheesy, and I loved/hated it all at the same time
Various Kenny Rogers songs "The Gambler" (love that one), "Lucille" (ditto), "Coward of the County" (I think the songwriter was possibly trying too hard on this one ).
Dean Friedman - must get a CD of some of his stuff
Etc, etc...

(RAWK! hell yeah!)

Ok my list of music in the spirit of this thread. I'm not embarrassed by any of it and I've always listened to a lots of different music anyway.

10cc, Supertramp, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield. Any of the 70's popular music as its already been said by other posters. Its pre-computer and made by musicians and that's what makes it so good.
Sister Sledge. Listen to Nile Rogers guitar playing intro on 'Thinking of You' its fantastic and runs throughout the song. The tab is on Ultimate Guitar and is very hard to play!
Boogie Nights by Heatwave! Good call Philly Q! I love that song and everyone did back then. Was that 1976?
I don't mind a bit of ABBA. A covers band called 'Paddy Goes To Holyhead' used to do a brilliant rocked up cover of 'Does Your Mother Know?' a few years back.
The Ojays
Marvin Gaye
Funkadelic
Gil Scott Heron
The Commodores
ELO
Blondie
Elvis Costello
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Joni Mitchell
Carly Simon
The Stone Roses
Radiohead
The Verve
The Seahorses....yes a bit of inde. It tends to get a bit of a slagging in here as its not rock or metal. For me its its music played by musicians not computers. I like lots of music like this, not just based on that principle but if I like it i like it.

I am not embarrassed by any of my favourite bands/musicians. I really couldn't care if someone ridiculed my tastes. I can't give a list here because I love a wide range of music. Maybe some of my mates think bands like Squeeze or Crowded House are lightweight but to me that is their problem. I got laughed at recently because I said I'd downloaded a Glen Campbell album..like I give a sh*t.

I really don't see it as guilty pleasure, if I took any time to learn to play a song I would not feel guilty, but I guess I could drag Build Me Up Buttercup - by Busted & McFly, out of the closet. I use to sing and play that a life time ago.

I was mini-cabbing years ago in the dead of night, listening to XFM when it wasn't too bad. There were a lot of music experts giving lists of their top 5 favorite songs. The Wichita Line Man was on all of their lists, which was a bit of a surprise to all of them, including me!

Yeah, I've only heard it a few times but there's something really powerful about the sound.  But powerful's not the right word... it just gets to you somehow.

(Oh, Boogie Nights was in the charts at the beginning of '77, so yes it must have been recorded in '76.  I used to listen to the Top 40 countdown every week in those days and it seemed to be in the charts forever!)

Yea, Charmless Man sticks out as a song for me; i remember being on holiday in Mexico when i was 11 or 12 (christ, that's a while ago now, only seems like yesterday!), and listening to a Blur cassette on a coach, think i played that song the most because i can't remember what other tracks were on it :p

I was a BIG Glen Campbell fan when I was first learning to play guitar. Witchita was one of my favourites, but Galveston and, even more so for me, Where's the Playground Susie? are higher up my list of favourites :D

By the time I get to Phoenix - sigh... and I was listening to some old vinyl the other day, and found that Rhinestone Cowboy is actually superb as well (!)

I haven't got a copy of it, but I remember he did a version of "If You Go Away (Ne Me Quitte Pas)" that was on a "Best of" we (me and my Dad) used to listen to on a cassette on the way to school/work - that was one of the songs that made me a singer/songwriter (and therefore guitarist :D).

Your right Phil, the bass playing from the early 80's stuff on your list is very good. For me that was the focal point on a lot of that music. The bass was as popular as the guitar as I remember it back then.

i agree that you shouldn't be embarassed. what really gets my goat is non-musicians telling me i should be embarassed about liking a certain type of music.

 I just re-read this Dave.

Personally, I'm happy with non-musicians telling me this because I can usually construct a well-reasoned response explaining what they're missing, and if they listen to this, they usually seem to agree with me and end up going "yeah, well, that type of music isn't really my cup of tea...", and I can then go "now you're talking :D ..."

But I do tend to get p1ssed off when musicians do the same thing... (assuming it's not just good-natured banter) ... I kinda feel musicians ought to know better, and that they haven't thought the consequences of their prejudices through as well as they might

There is nothing awesome about power metal. Not ever. Especially not people who sing "May your sword be wet like a young girl in her prime" without even a wink or a smile.

Manowar aren't Powermetal, but that's an argument for another thread.

They are by modern parlance.

Just because they keep a straight face that doesn't mean they aren't laughing inside   :D :D

Some of the ex-members were probably "laughing inside" when they saw Eric Adams, 58, and Joey DeMaio, 67, standing there naked apart from some stone-age leggings, pleather tanga briefs and a couple of plastic swords.

But I've never seen the slightest bit of evidence that Mr DeMaio, 73, has any sense of humour whatsoever.

Sorry, must stop talking about Manowar.

So back on topic...(No more Manowar its horrific!)

Mudd, Slade, T-Rex, The Sweet.

Pilot..A Double neck Gibson guitarist with a green tank top. A devastating combo!

Sky (who was the guitarist?) Was it Steve Howe?

Remember that one hit wonder from the 80's PHD? "I woooont let yooooo down, let yoooo down agaaain" Didn't like that so not a guilty pleasure, just thought I'd bring it up.

Not sure who else was in Sky Johnny, but wasn't it Mr John Williams the classical chap? (And Herbie Flowers on bass)

You could be right there Andy. He used to sit down and play an electric on Top Of The Pops!

Kevin Peek was the other guitar player - played a Gibson L5S.  And Williams had an RD Artist, I think.

(Why won't my brain contain any useful information, that I could turn into money?  )

They also did "Little Suzi's On The Up", covered by Tesla on their first album.  OK by me!

Not entirely sure if this should be a guilty pleasure as I don't really know about them, but just found something called Bat For Lashes on my hard drive, something my lady put on there so she could transfer to her mp3 player.
It's entrancing! I feel completely intoxicated. Gotta say I love it. Does anyone know of any similar stuff with really ethereal / entrancing vocals that they can recommend?

I guess the artist that people generally expect me least likely to listen to (being mostly an 80s/90s metal-head) is Lonnie Donegan.

That guy just rocked, plain and simple.

I managed to see him at Guilfest in 2000 (took my dad along to see Van Morrison) where, at the age of 69 he rocked harder than any of the supposed "headlining acts" on the main stage.
