Title: I have £600, maybe a bit more, for a new amp:
Post by: Pierre on March 03, 2009, 08:47:17 PM
Combo or head, I'd prefer a combo at this stage though but it's not that a big deal. If it's a head I'd prefer with an 8ohm out.
NICE clean channel (almost the most important thing), and footswitchable gain channel, think AC/DC levels of gain, open sounding, thick and rich sounding (and the kitchen sink, and diamond incrusted knobs).
12'' speaker (more than one ok but not good for weight).

Contenders:

Orange Dual Terror
Orange Rocker 30
Fender Deluxe Reverb is out of contention since they're not way overpriced :(
Laney Lionheart doesn't have a gain channel I particularly like...
Marshall JVM205

Anything else I should consider? This is to buy by the way, I decided to treat myself...

Marshall Vintage Modern is my favourite new amp in that price range at the moment. or you could go 2nd hand...

Aye.. I think I'll wait for the right R30 to pop up second hand. If possible in black :D If not, it'll be the Dual Terror. The JVM205, unless second hand (rare) will be a bit too expensive... too bad as they sound incredible. But the more I think about this the more I have 'Rocker30' flashing in my head...

I think I may know a man selling a Fender Reverb for about 600 if that's any good to you. Although I have an odd feeling that it's a 2x12? I can check into it anyhoo.

I also noted a chap selling a Cornford Harlequin for £450 in market place, could be real cool. 8)

I placed a £400 offer on a Matamp C7, should get the results in two days but I'm not too hopeful and it's my maximum for now I think... Also may have leads on a Laney LH50MK2 head for £150 shipped. I'm really hoping this one will work out!

Not too interested in the 212 combos as I'm likely moving out and out the country this summer :(

What's Marketplace..?

Thanks for the ideas so far guys!

I like Orange amps for the R30 gets a +1 from me.

I played a Fender DeVille at the weekend and it seemed a nice amp, but I was concentrating on the guitar not the amp, it was priced in the shop at £650 so it may be worth looking at? It may be totally unsuitable, I'm just throwing a name into the ring :)

Apologies Pierre, I meant the seconds out section. Here's a link:

I dont' think you can fulfil all your checklist for £600 and still buy new.

THe Rocker 30 is a fine amp, but that is based on the gain channel. The clean channel is a big compromise and is generally agreed to be poor.
The Dual terror I don't know too much about - it'll do the gain, I'm sure, whether it's got a good clean channel would probably be the deciding factor.
if you like the Lionheart's distortion, and it has enough volume for you without breaking up on the clean channel, then it could be the amp for you. Personally, I find the distortion too "loose" and vintagey (in a real 60's way) for me.
JVM and VM --ughh. The Vm is a single channel amp anyway.

Other (slightly more expensive) options for you are a Bogner Alchemist (highly recommended),

or ............ a nice clean amp, like a Hot Rod Deluxe/Blues Deluxe (or an AC30CC) plus a drive pedal or two.  It's much easier to get a new drive pedal for a new flavour of drive, than buy a whole new amp.  A pedal rig will generally also sound the same at all volumes.

I already have a pedal rig :( Laney AOR30 on the clean channel (yep ) and my pedals for all levels of gain.

As you need 2 channels, I'd go for Marshall DSL50 or 100 or otherwise try a JVM indeed.

Look for a Peavey 65 watt Ultratube 1 x 12 combo second hand and then re-valve it with some advice from Derek at Watford Valves. The whole deal will come in at well under budget and you will get a superb amplifier that most of the guys on this forum have either missed or ignored! :) It has switching facilities for various extension cab impedance's as well so you can use it at home as a combo or extend the output by using an extension cab

Never heard clips... I'm quite ok with it though, I'm usually really into Laneys. And well for this price... It's not in the greatest of states, but it'll do ok.

The Vm is a single channel amp anyway.

yes, but i feel i should justify my suggestion by point out it has a footswitch to toggle in an extra gain stage.
