Sorry if you like them, but they are just terrible and i cannot believe they have got a headlining spot on the main stage at Download festival. People are bigging it up like it's something huge, but the fact is nobody cared about them before they just recently reformed (without the original guitarist i might add). Have not done anything apart from make average music and influence one of the worst genres of all time, nu metal.
Bands like Whitesnake who are on the Download bill, way better, more popular and sold more records. But who are underneathe Def leppard on the bill, deserve that headlining spot more. I'm not saying i want Whitesnake headlining Download, i like them where they are on the bill. But they deserve it more than Faith No More.
I also heard about Heaven and Hell being rumoured to play Download, surely they deserve it more than Faith No More too?
/rant.
-
faith no more are awesome! faith no more may have influenced nu metal.. but you cant hold that against them, its not their fault nu metal twisted their music into that...
-
As if Whitesnake and Def Leppard have their original guitarists either.
-
Faith No More can't be held solely responsible for influencing Nu-Metal.
Don't go then if you don't like the line up, go on holiday to Cleethorpes instead.
" but the fact is nobody cared about them before"
You were 50% unfertilised Ovum back then so how did you work that one out?
-
Just go to Reading, Blink 182 are rumored to be headlining I think :P
-
The guitarists may not be original, but they are established in the band and have recorded with them. I don't see what's so good about Faith No More that gives them a main stage headlining spot.
I already bought my ticket before they got announced.
-
Ah you bought your ticket on Blind Faith :lol: :lol:
So now just a case of sour grapes! Oh well there is a lesson in there....
-
Hopefully we get Heaven and Hell headlining the 2nd stage or something.
-
you will return converted and buy all their albums!
magnificent band. The Real Thing and Angel Dust are two of my all time favourite records, and the later stuff is all good too. even Introduce Yourself is fun! and of course includes We Care A Lot. i'm glad i got to see them before Jim Martin left, but this is one re-formed band i'd be happy to go see even without him.
people say they influenced Nu Metal, but there's really no comparison.
-

Jon Hudson was in the band before they broke up in '98 and was on the last album Album of the Year.
Not that I care... a lot.
-
Haha, that was a bad choice of album title. :lol:
-
Retreat gracefully and with dignity from this subject Crazy Joe...
You ain't gonna win this one.. PDT_025 PDT_046 PDT_018

Not that I care... a lot.
Nice one Philly - Very subtle.
-
It was intentionally ironic :roll:
I'm old enough to laugh knowingly at all this nu metal hate. I can remember when Whitesnake couldn't get arrested, never mind booked for a large festival, and 80s metal was seen as one big joke, yet now there's kids in guyliner with ripped jeans playing 32nd note sweep picked lines and everyone thinks it's great :roll:
Faith No More were true pioneers who had some great songs. If all you've ever heard is Epic then you're getting a very narrow view of what they were about.
Nu metal was influenced by some great bands (Alice in Chains influence is very noticeable in many bands, same for Pantera), and TBH I enjoyed a lot of music from that time (again, a time when you were what 11?). Yes there was some unmitigated shitee, but that's what happens as soon as there's a "scene". Labels start snapping up any old act to turn a quick buck, and the 80s metal scene certainly suffered from it's fair share of these.
I think the whole problem with these "scenes" or " movements" is they feel the need to distance themselves from what went before. Too many bands today wouldn't have seemed out of place in 1988, and seem to be pretending that the last 20 years never happened. If they incorporated the grooving rhythms,sonic textures, emotive lyrics and strong vocal hooks of Nu metal and Grunge they could make something awesome and truly new.
-
Angel dust is one of my fav albums of all time.
RV is a great song!
and Midlife Crisis; blinding, love that drum intro.
I thought they had gone through at least four guitarists??
-
and 80s metal was seen as one big joke
errr, has something changed that I'm not aware about. What's all the "was" malarky?
-
The majority of people i have spoken to have said Faith No More fail or who are Faith No More?!
Maybe they appeal more to musicians. But even then, i don't see what the fuss is about.
-
Probably because you're talking to people under 30.

Actually, I haven't heard them for a long time (I I just scr@pe under 30 by a few months). I oculd completely my mind on them. I listened to Nine Inch Nails for the first time in a decade or so and although I used to love, I only ended up listening to a few tracks. Dunno, maybe we're all getting old :D
-
i love faith no more - but am another that probably hasnt listened to any for a while
i may be approaching 29 but this is still an awesome song!

Probably because you're talking to people under 30.
I'm guessing the majority of people who are going to Download will be under 30 as well, so it would make more sense to have a band who appeal more to the audience? I dont think anyone I know has heard of Faith No More either :lol:
-
And yet Joe has heard of Whitesnake and Def Leppard, both of whom are way older. But that's not the point. FNM have been out of the spotlight for a long time, so if you talk to a bunch of 18-24s they aren't really going to have a very informed opinion.
FNM ARE a great band and DEFINITELY deserve billing above Whitesnake, and their reunion is a HUGE event. Joe should be more open minded and just go listen to them, and if he doesn't want to? It's a festival, I'm sure there'll be something more to his taste on a short walk away.
-
its not that long ago (maybe 3-4 years) i was telling all my students about rage against the machine and they were all looking at me with blank faces - some that really should have known better too
then there was the girl in yr8 a year or two before that who told me she was really into 'that new band' green day - she wouldnt believe i had been listening to them at her age

When did i say i had never listened to them?
I've listened to plenty, point is, people know Def Leppard and Whitesnake because they are popular and multi million selling artists, Faith No More's most popular album sold 3 million worldwide.
Download festival is not full of 30 year olds
-
It's also not exclusively populated by 20 year olds either.
-
The majority is, hence why they shouldn't be headlining.
-
Well here's the jig. If Heaven and Hell are playing then it matters sod all whose at the top. Just as long as they play it'll matter bugger all when Faith No More play. Admittingly I used to love some of their stuff (Epic, Midlife Crisis, Ashes to Ashes) but I have agree with the others here that 'Faith No More' shouldn't really be that high up. I honestly thought Dream Theatre or Whitesnake would've gotten more of the prime.
-

I think you should boycott it on principle.
Personally I love FNM, have seen them a few times and they are seriously good live.
-
God all almighty what a hissy fit your having 'Crazy' Joe!
Get a refund then.
Life can be like this most of the time. I.E Not going exactly the way you want it to, when you want.
Go clean your room as penance for your girl like mannerisms!
-
i don't really think you can hold them responsible for nu metal, it's not like they knew it was going to happen. i mean, i hate nu metal, but i like FNM. That'd be a bit like blaming niels bohr for the atomic bomb because he came up with the structure of the atom... :?
-
Can't be arsed to read the whole thread, but remember Feeder a few years ago?!
more to the point, WhiteSnake and Def Leppard!!!
Didn't think that would happen so soon, after my girlfriend of the time promised to buy tickets, then found out the cost of them. I hope they are on the same day.
-
I wish they would have some sense and put the oldie/classic bands all on the same day
Whitesnake, Def Leppard, ZZ Top, Motley Crue, Anvil etc
Then I dont have to pend 3 days in a warzone with 3rd world toilets to see them all
I've never liked festivals that were more than a day - always liked the old Monsters of Rock and indoor gigs
-
old Monsters of Rock
i always thought download was just the latest version of monsters of rock... quite local for me actually but i always like the camping at festivals so tend to go further
-
Old monsters of rock, now we're talking! I had to use my pants to wipe my arse after a particularly large poo (even by my standards) before going in 88, I believe it was due to mixing my drinks, or something. But at least it was only the one day going commando after that. I felt sorry for the bird that was standing outside the lav to go in next. If I'd have known, I wouldn't have stuck me cecks to the side of the cubicle. Oh happy days...
-
^ :lol:
I went to Monsters Of Rock and yes they did it all in one day. It was a great day out and cheap!
The 3 day thing and spreading those bands over it, is how the promoters get you to part with the money for a 3 day ticket. Fests years ago were organised in the spirit of the event. Now its about money. IMO this turn of tactics came about in the mid 90's when 'Britpop' became popular and that took over Glastonbury from the crusty new age traveler event it had become. Mr Eavis realised he was sitting on a Goldmine, or his advisers did and that high price and 3 day event style of organising became the template for the other festivals. This is of course just my observation but things did rapidly change when Festivals became popular or more popular than they had been previously.
-
I went to the first two Monsters of Rock - Rainbow in '80 and AC/DC in '81. Didn't enjoy it that much to be honest - I forgot my glasses one year (due to having to get up at 4am) so couldn't see anything all day. And the other time it was raining so the whole place turned into a sea of mud with bales of hay dotted around like little islands. We did meet Mick Box from Uriah Heep though!
I avoided the "toilet problem" (so beautifully described by Shobet :lol: ) by not eating or drinking, at all, for 24 hours...
Never again.

My mum went to Mosters of Rock with my brother. Was there one with Metalica and Machine Head?
-
ahhh wish I had the cash to travel from Oz to see this, with all the hostility towards FNM getting the headlining gig, patton will be in his element.
-

1996
Edit: I was there, and probably got the T-shirt.
Edit: Actually I just checked Wikipedia and it was 1995: Time flies :(

I can take or leave FNM. I do like some of their stuff, like those songs mentioned above - very good tracks - but the one thing that keeps me from really liking Faith No More is the truly abysmal vocal work on, especially (but not limited to): We Care A Lot. It's absolutely diabolical! Reminds me of the total vocal failure that is Bob Dylan...
Either way, they are undoubtedly a big band who have influenced a lot of people, but - unlike the Beatles - they *did* manage to do some good stuff, so they should at least have a little bit of respect for that :)

Chuck Moseley isn't the singer anymore Roo so you have no reason to not like them (unless you don't like Mike Patton!)

Excellent :) I figured that, since Album of the Year is pretty much fine as far as vocals goes, they'd got rid of the previous loser :) Good for them!

My first Monsters gig was 1984 with
* AC/DC
* Van Halen
* Ozzy Osbourne
* Gary Moore (recorded as Live At Monsters Of Rock)
* Y&T
* Accept
* Mötley Crüe
Went again in 1988 - the year that the fans died in the GNR crush (GNR were somewhat overrated that day to be fair)
* Iron Maiden
* KISS
* David Lee Roth
* Megadeth
* Guns N' Roses
* Helloween
The year after it was at Milton Keynes (Bon Jovi, Europe, Skid Row and Vixen)
Went again in 1990
# Whitesnake
# Aerosmith
# Poison
# Quireboys
# Thunder
And 1991
* AC/DC
* Metallica
* Mötley Crüe
* Queensryche
* The Black Crowes

I went to that one. I drank so much beer that when Aerosmith flew in on Concord and landed at East Midlands Airport I was still unconscious and my mates woke me up about 10 mis before they came on stage. I got quite near the front after plenty of 'Argy Bargy'! It was a great day I managed to watch Whitesnake with Steve Vai and we left two songs before the end and saved ourselves about 5 hours queuing to get out of the car park.
I think the ticket price was around 20 quid.
The 1984 one sounds good!
Off Topic Jonathon, you're welcome to join us next Saturday. We're all going to be showing each other our toys in a studio in N1. :D
-
I can remember Whitesnake and Poison for the 1990 one, but I'm buggered if I can remember the rest of the bands that day. The joys of alchomohol!

Great lineup and a f**king sensible ticket price.
Had a brilliant day with the best girlfriend I've ever had... Oh happy days. (She's married to a German now :( )

Me too. I seem to remember lots of noise at the time about Whitesnake topping Aerosmith, but I was more into Vai than Perry...
Remember that Vai solo spot where the stage went dark with one spotlight on his Ibanez ringing out a single note as it floated up into the air..?
Priceless!
Girlfriend at the time made me stand at the front with her on my shoulders while Poison were on... Damn, that was hard work...
Mark.
-
Yup Vai's solo spot was classic. A consummate showman.
The guitar was covered like a mirror ball and the effect as it spun into the rig was spectacular.

I wish I'd gone to that one (and the 1987 lineup was great too), but Tommy Vance played Whitesnake's performance on the Friday Rockshow and I taped it and listened to it over and over again...
-
FNM are fantastic. King For A Day is favourite album by them by a long shot. I seen them headline at the Phoenix festival in 1995 & can't wait to see them again. :)
-
Gingataff that Tommy Vance broadcast is out there in cyberspace as a rather large mp3. Its on my ipod. Can put it on a cd for you!
Do you know i can't even remember Poison being there I was so pissed up. The beer tent had a super efficient system to keep down queuing. So i ended up skulling around 10 pints in 2 hours and fell asleep :lol: Even the sound of Concords engines were not loud enough to wake me up! That was one of the Whitesnake V Aerosmith one-up-man-ships between the bands. A ffing Concord! Fantastic. :D

Cheers Johnny. I might see if I can track it down first, if not I'll get in touch! He also played a live show that WASP did at Hammersmith that I listened to over and over again for years. I wish I could find that one on the web.

Try looking in the newsgroup k.b.music.mp3 for the Whitesnake live at Donninton
No luck with the WASP one though.It may turn up one day.

Agreed, Chuck Moseley was a godawful vocalist, but I do find those first two albums uncannily addictive to listen to...it's odd. I think it's just because his style and lyrics and the whole sound remind me of the "good" 80's, hehe. Patton's vocals on The Real Thing were good but I think his vocals improved with each album. My faves by far are Angel Dust and King For A Day, although I used to hate the latter on the basis that Jim Martin had left. :)
I would go to download but it's way too much money just to go and see one band. Can't say many of the others on the bill really interest me.
-
I'm going to Download purely off the back of Faith No More, I had no intention of ever going to a mainstream rock festival in the UK ever again until that announcement.
Wonderful, wonderful band.
-
I'm a massive mike patton fan, and think that Faith No More coming back is an absolute godsend. Real shame that I can't go to download this year. Hoping they play at another festival I'm going to.

They're not playing anything else in the UK at all. There will be European dates though, and I'd wager there'll be more stuff next year.
-
have throughly enjoyed reading this thread :)
nu metal would have happened anyway, there are other bands which clearly influenced that genre, for example pantera, or even zeppelin.
i don't like faith no more 'per se', but they are a massive band, and also in retrospect quite innovative.
naturally i'd rather see 'high and dry' period def leppard, but i'll pick faith no more as headliners over their current line up.
to the older guys - music moves on, i'm enjoying the nostalgia, but the kids do stuff differently now, doesn't mean its bad.
more controversy from crazy joe! Not everyone is younger than 25 mate :) but some interesting points in your posts i think.
i'd love to see rammstein, rage against the machine, system of a down, or the prodigy headline :) now thats showing /my/ age!
agree that Download is a sort of Monster Of Rock remix. I doubt I'll ever attend either - I have a dislike of festivals.

Not going anywhere in Uk so thats fine.
