Title: Volme pedals
Post by: Spitfire on March 07, 2009, 12:02:46 PM
hey, this is a subject ive never really looked at... i know the ernie ball ones are quite highly regarded.. my housemate has a dunlop one which blows pretty bad, but its one of thoes wah/vol pedals.

anyway the thing im not sure on is, their are 500k models and 250k models.. is it the same as with pots in a guitar.. go for the 250k (as a guide) if you use single coils and 500k if you use hums??  but as the pots in your guitar alter your tone a lot... does the pot in the vol pedal??

Im using Hums and single coils.. what wouly you recomend??

I have an Ernie Ball mono pedal-its killer-it has 250 k, which sounds the same with single coils or hums-i believe the stereo pedal has 500k pot, while a pedal made to work best with active pups(emg's,for example), will have a 25k pot-250k is standard for single coil and hums, I believe-certainly works for me :)

The cheap Bespecco ones do the trick, I've had the same one for about 10 years and it's still perfect.
My advise would be don't spend loads of money on what is basically a potentiometer in a box

Although bad ones will suck your tone as much as a tuner.

I'd go for an optical True bypass Volume pedal like the George dennis one.

another thing to check out is the "sweep" of the pedal-I use the volume pedal in conj. with delay for some cool swell effects, and I had a roland that was too "extreme",I suppose..the ball lets me really ooze in and out -has a broader range, or sweep-

i dont like how the ernie balls use potentiometers. Lower impedance pots = treble suckage.

Plus, they dont offer a mono 500k anymore. So you have to get the stereo one if you dont want tone suck. and its WAY overpriced. 170$ for a second volume knob, that sucks treble, with only a fragile string holding it together? give me a break.

They should make a 2 megk one to prevent suck

got mine for 60 bucks....whew!! and it doesnt suck anything(nothing in my rig does..otherwise, I wouldnt use!!)the 250k works fine for my Pauls and Strats,Hamers,Anderson...my boogs have plenty of versatility when it comes to treble, but I havent noticed any suckkage myself...as always, mileage may vary :D

Yeah. I find the level of noticeable suck depends on type of amp and amount of gain. I like my gain aggressive, so i can tell when the top end and some power gets sucked out.
