What do you guys use? I'm looking for mostly a balanced EQ tone, especially on the mids. I have a very punchy Strat, big and loud. I want clarity and thickness mostly (... yes I know, both together isn't always possible but eh...), along with a good cut. I'm not too fussed on bass tightness, capacity to clean up, output...
I use right now in this guitar a Duncan Alnico II bucker which is roughly 90% of the way there, but I'd like added meat and harmonics to the sound :)
I'm considering the Cold Sweat and Crawlers so far based on advise and the descriptions... any others I should be looking (hearing) into? Thanks!

*cough*you already know what i'm gonna say*cough*
:P

Try a Holydiver, best clean sound i've heard in a humbucker and the distorted tones are so sweet. I find them balanced, but still cut through live.

A VHII might be the way to go, but they are quite bright. Not sure if they'll have the thickness you're after.
I'm wondering if a Holydiver would do the trick. I've got a couple on the way as I'm after a similar thing ;)

Crawlers. You have basically described them in your intro. Crawlers all the way.

In my Strats with Humbuckers I have a Cold Sweat in 1, and a Crawler in the other.
The Crawler imo is easilly the most versatile of the 2, with better cleans, and has a very full sound. That'd be my suggestion from the 2 unless you were looking for an all out rock pickup :)

I called them up today.
They advised first the Crawler, then possibly the VHII though they also said it may not be as thick. You guys certainly know your stuff, and once again I got great service by calling up! So because I'm silly I ordered a Crawler in all black fo the Strat :D
