Title: yardbirds.Pics added.
Post by: marantz1300 on March 10, 2009, 08:17:17 PM
I fitted my Yardbirds today. Very well made.I thought they sounded OK ,better then the standard 62 pups, but not as good as I'd hoped. While fitting them I noticed the pots were the small type and the three way switch  was a cheap plastic one. So I went shopping and came home with some proper 250k pots , a fender three way switch and a Fender bridge plate with brass saddles. What a change. Now the Yardbirds are stunning. Great Tele tones.Cutting, lovely harmonics.A nice balance between neck and bridge tones.                                                                                                                                                                                           (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/100_0831.jpg)                                                                                                   (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/100_0835.jpg)

I'm glad to hear the all the upgrades are getting you the sound you're after. Now I've got bad GAS for a 60's tele with Yardbirds   8)

Looks really good :D

Does the bridge pickup come with a baseplate as standard? (the Product page seemed a bit confused on this subject last time I looked)

All my tele bridge pickups had them. In fact ALL good tele pickups should have them. think the confusion is around the material used.

Yes the bridge pup has a brass plate engraved with the Bare Knuckles logo, beveled pole pieces and cloth cover wires.  The pups are old school Tele tones. The bridge is bright and clear without becoming too shrill or piercing. The neck has a  bluesy /jazzy tone, never mushy or muffled. I like them but if you want something more aggressive ,they may not be for you.

Nice one :D

Are you able to comment on their "aggressiveness" in comparison with the stock pups? (I know it's a bit subjective and hard to define once you've put the BKPs in!)

The reason I ask is I'm getting on fine with the stock pups at the moment, but I know what else BKPs will add - so I will be replacing them . I'm just not quite sure where I'm going...

Compared to my other BKP'd teles, I'm finding the stock pups, tonally, are slightly "less full" sounding than my Blackguard 50s, and output-wise, they're down a notch or two...

I'm definitely not going Blackguards in this one, I'm going for 60s, so yardbirds seems the obvious, but "other options" like Brown Sugars are appearing... I still think it's Yardbirds for me...

If the "feel" of the yardbird is in the same ballpark as these stock ones, but with the improved "more" BKPs give, then that is almost certain what I'll want from this geetar...

The stock pickups are OK.The Yardbirds are similar. There's better balance between them and they are clearer, not muddy or shrill. They are old school, not aggressive. With the mods they just snapped into focus.

That's all I need to know  8)

I'm liking the ballpark the stock ones put me in when compared to my other guitars - but I know from experience that BKPs take it somewhere else again. Sounds like the Yardbirds are the boys for me...

Nice one - many thanks :D
