Title: Replacing PG's with something meatier but not Mules

I have two Les Pauls - one non-chambered, heavy and fitted with A2 Mules which has a thick, tight, deep tone.  I love it.

I also have a chambered Les Paul with PG Blues in which I like but am starting to think sounds a bit underpowered and weedy.

I want to replace the PG's - Mules seem like an obvious option but I don't want two Les Pauls that sound exactly the same.  I like vintage with growl (liking Billy Gibbons, Warren Haynes, Dave Grissom) and am thinking along the following lines:

1. Black Dogs - a lot of bite but the Youtube clips of the chaps playing Since I've Been Loving You with them sound pretty sweet and PAF'y to me too

2. Put Mules in anyway as they might sound different in a chambered Lester

3. Get Tim to do some Mules with a hotter wind

What do you all think?

What about having the PG blues modified?

Do you want to retain an out of phase middle tone?

I don't really want the out of phase tone.

You could try the Mules with A4 magnets, which might give a variation in tone but retain the characteristics you like - perhaps, like you say, with a slightly hotter wind.  I certainly liked the A4 Mules I had in my LP, so much so that I'm considering dropping a set into another guitar. That's pretty much the only suggestion I can give, as the rest of my experience with BKP humbuckers is at the other end of the output range - Warpigs, Nailbombs, Holy Divers.

Vintage with growl would describe the Emerald pickup quite well.

The bridge is 13k DC - Neck 11k DC, so it has plenty of ooomph when required.

I'm working on new clips right now. I'll post some when done.

I'm down to a shortlist of two:  Black Dogs or Abraxas.  The Black Dogs seem to have a lovely 59 PAF tone with much more ouput, the Abraxas is high-ish output but rounded and smooth.  Again, want both, can't afford a new Les Paul to try them in!   Let's have a vote.....

if thats the choice, black dogs. worried abraxas might be too dark
