Great idea for a thread!

I have many favourite album covers, but the one that really moved me when I was a young'in, and still does today, is the cover painting for Rush's Caress Of Steel:

Anything that isn't Iron Maiden's Dance of Death. Christ, that was terrible.

Having said that, this is absolutely godly:

This may be on the edge of the remit, as it probably includes / represents material from an abstracted photographic base, but by definition it is art(full) work . So I just had to submit these three :

Favourites for me (vinyl lp - covers, inner sleeve, labels and all) were:

Queen - Night at the Opera
- generally beautiful

Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
- intriguing and clever

Rory Gallagher - Top Priority

This last one was my MOST favourite, all red and white, with black and white photos. One side of the inner sleeve was a close up of a his hand with a slide on on the fretboard. The package just did the whole thing for me (plus the music in the grooves). His brother Donal has kinda spoiled it for me on the remastered CD - not a dash of red in the artwork, period incorrect photos, and remixed the fecking thing!!

I liked Stage Struck too... where's the bluddy artwork gone on the CD on that one as well??

Couldn't find any pics of the inner sleeves (and I can't be @rsed to get mine out and photograph them...)

I really tend to like death metal, extreme thrash metal covers, even though i like other music better.
HOWEVER, i LOVE Cirith Ungols covers (love the music too!)

Also, Death has some nice ones...
Oh god, there are so many nice ones, but i usually find the ones i like among the more unusual metal bands.

Heres also a good site http://www.truemetal.org/metalwallpaper/ for finding cd covers.

The Clash, London Calling cover is a famous image now.

Found some text about its photographer ect.

When famed rock photographer Pennie Smith was hired to document the Clash on their 1979 US tour, she was justifiably concerned - the anarchic British band had become famous for unleashing volleys of spit onto their frantically dancing audience. But the band was going through some transformations as the end of the 70s rolled around, incorporating elements of reggae and other styles into their trademark punk sound. However, this didn't leaven their wild performances at all, as Smith found out when she captured the iconic shot of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his instrument on the stage of the Palladium in NYC. The image would become the cover of the Clash's breakout London Calling. The typography was created by graphic designer Ray Lowry, who produced a parody of the pink and green lettering found on Elvis Presley's debut album. The conscious nostalgia to a purer time of rock & roll, juxtaposed against the decadent image of Simonon smashing his bass guitar, sent a bold message to the world that the Clash were taking over.

Not a bad album either...
"Really don't mind if you sit this one out.

My words but a whisper -- your deafness a SHOUT.
I may make you feel but I can't make you think.
Your sp***'s in the gutter -- your love's in the sink.
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
you make all your animal deals and
your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick." and a great song

Didn't you like The Stranglers Live X cert nfe?

Here's few Jeff Beck ones I like for the photography.

+ The Stranglers Black & White Album. Back in the days of vinyl for those who are to young to remember or wasn't born, It was Side A & Side B. The Stranglers Did A Black side and A White side and the moods certainly reflect those tones in the music. These guys are scary, I couldn't get enough of their stuff when I was growing up.

your actually RIGHT!
in the movie, he sits there, pulls out a cut throat razor and hacks away large chunks of his own flesh, and blood goes up the wall a bit. its really freaky, the dudes movements are really jerky and messed up. then eventually god dies and YES! fully unloads his anal cavity all over the floor and his feet. its like the horrible black muck falls down the legs. once that has happened, "mother earth" appears from behind the chair and dances around holding her bewbs, before getting gods Koch out and making him jizz (while dead) and then she rubs the jizz into her womanly parts to get herself pregnant.

thats all true! i watched a large portion of this film but ive never seen the end.

the son of god & mother earth is deaf dumb and blind. he gets beaten to death while rolling around in dirt by these monk like characters.

it wasnt made that long ago. but the whole things is really hi contrast black and white, and the actors are part of the directors theatre troope i think.

I've seen part of Begotten because someone made a video for an Electric Wizard song on youtube using parts from it. Dont know if I want to see the whole thing, it looks pretty weird and disturbing.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
The film opens with a robed, profusely bleeding "God" disemboweling himself, with the act ultimately ending in his death. A woman emerges from his remains, arouses the body, and impregnates herself with his ejaculate. Becoming pregnant, she wanders off into a vast and barren landscape. The pregnancy manifests in a fully grown man whom she leaves to his own devices.

The "Son of Earth" meets a group of faceless nomads who seize him with what is either a very long umbilical cord or a rope. The Son of Earth vomits organic pieces, and the nomads excitedly accept these as gifts. The nomads finally bring the man to a fire and burn him.

"Mother Earth" encounters the resurrected man and comforts him. She seizes the man with a similar umbilical cord. The nomads appear and proceed to rape her. Son of Earth is left to mourn over the lifeless body. A group of characters appears, carry her off and dismember her, later returning for Son of Earth. After he, too, is dismembered, the group buries the remains, planting the parts into the crust of the earth. The burial site becomes lush with flowers.

So.  Not one for Mothers Day then..?
