Title: New Project :-)
Post by: Johnny Mac on March 12, 2009, 10:14:59 PM
After much searching I've found a drummer, a bass player, another guitarist and a Sax player! Could be interesting. Got 3 hours in a studio in two weeks.  :D

Yeah he is an old mate of mine so it should be good. I don't know how the drummer and his guitar playing mate will take to it though!  One of two ways.

That sounds great Johnny !  :D

To have the Drummer, Bass and a Sax player to work with sounds like heaven.  It will be interesting as to what music you all end up playing / agreeing on.  Sounds a great combo though.  8)

Don't ask me I'm as much in the dark as you lads!

Well this is how this all came about. My mate the sax player got in touch on facebook about an open mike blues thing.  I said yes why not. He put an ad out for bass and drums. The day after that conversation I was injured at work (see NDE thread) Then a week later a district nurse came to my flat to take the stitches out of my head. She says to me "well what are you going to do with yourself for the 6 weeks you've been signed off work?" So I said "play my guitars." She said "are you in a band?" I said "I wish, I can't find a drummer" She says "I know a drummer who's looking to get another band going" I grabbed a pen wrote my mobile number down and said "give him my number and get him to ring me!" Two weeks later he did! He has an open mind about musical direction but did stress a liking for The Foo Fighters and Queens Of The Stone Age. I gulped! Fingers crossed, diplomacy will gel us together and we will do songs we all like. I wish my mate the sax player could do vocals too. We still need a front man cos i can only sing and play 'hurry up harry' by sham 69! I do know someone and he is really good. He plays guitar, bass and writes plus he's a tattoo artist! Pray for me lads!

Thanks for those suggestions.  :) Baker St is a great song, not too struck on the foos version but it may give me a bit of leverage!

Yes the nurse story still has me giggling. Yes she was a nice girl. You should have heard when this drummer phoned me up last week. "Hello, is that John?" "yes speaking" "I'm a drummer, you know my friend, shes a nurse" "Eh?" At this stage I thought i was going to get accused of shagging another blokes missus! Then the penny dropped! I was trying not to laugh.

The sax player got a text last week to say he is going to be a dad so he is all over the place now! This is gonna be a fun day. I've been practising Know one knows by QOTSA which is a challenge but got it nearly nailed now so hopefully it will keep this bloke happy. He sounds like he means business, so I'm praying he likes it as drummers are like rocking horse shite!

 The sax player in that clip is part of those weird Welsh blokes who overdub Grant Mitchel on the gangs!

Yeah, I know, but I still thought you might know them  .  Are they famous?  I just thought they were some random blokes dicking around on YouTube.

No I don't know them, thank god. I know enough nutters without them adding to the tally! They do get a bit of interest on Youtube.

Once the broadband band width goes up can you imagine the crazy internet based TV channels? Should be fun though.

It went well today. The bass player plays like Norman Watt Roy and  Jaco Pastorius. He pumps it out all over the place and sounds great. The Sax is amazing, really good. The drummer forgot about the clocks going forward but did a great job when he got there! There is a big musical difference between us but I tried to mediate and thought I got through with the message lets use compromise and lets us all bring in ideas. Its kind of hard though as the bass player isn't used to playing in 4/4 but I'm determined to make this work some how. I was playing clean or with a little gain today on the Feline Lion. I got tested quite a bit I noticed, but it was a great day all in all, one of the best studio days I've had for years.

So a jazz/funk Sax player

A Bass man who loves Weather Report

A drummer who likes blues rock

An me who will do anything as Lifes too short to faff about!

I'm off to get on a stage again tonight, at an open mike in Leyton, East London. It's the first time in donkeys years I've done one, so it should be interesting. I'm going with the drummer I jammed with on Sunday.

:D

That was a good last night. There were some great guitar players there. I was so nervous my fingers froze in fear!

Here's a blurry pic of me and my Feline Lion at The Coach & Horses, Leyton E10.
Its a good open mike if anyones interested and its near the Central Line.
