Title: Luthier help with neck dent please
Post by: Gooby on March 18, 2009, 07:57:56 PM
I had a rock and roll accident with a bass of mine. Well no thats not true, I was sleeping on the sofa because I am old and woke with a start and it went flying lol.

Anyway I would like to sell my bass and put any cash towards 'I must have a Les Paul project'. Does anyone have experience in repairing dents in Mahogany?

As you can see from pic it's not nice to look at or touch with the fretting hand.

Cheers

Martin

i would try steaming out the worst and then doing a drop fill to get it even and shiny

it looks a bit dirty - how old is it.  obviously the repairs hide easier when they are done soon after the inury

To steam out a would use a clean damp rag and a soldering iron - very direct heat and steam so as not to affect the whole neck - although its worth bearing in mind it can affect the neck and may requie some set-up afterwards.  also it looks like teh wood fibres may be torn rather than just pushed in, that stops the steaming being as effective

to drop fill on a vintage instrument i would be getting the nitro lacquer out and slowly buidling the fill up a drop at a time over a few weeks... for something modern or less valuable i would do the same thing with superglue

if anything i said doesnt make sense then at least you can research a buit more to see if its something you want to try or something that should be done by a pro.

I usually manage to screw it up.  I do the drop-fill OK, but then manage to rub-through either side of the filled area.  :(

The razorblade trick looks neat, but I'd probably bollocks that up too.

Great stuff. I put frets.com in my favorites. This stuff could come in handy some day.
