Well my Agile Intrepid Standard Dual in Darkburst arrived a coupld of days ago. I absolutely love it. It looks awesome and sounds even better. I took it straight out of the box and put on some elixers, installed a clip lock and got rid of the ugly truss rod cover and now it's perfect. It is built very well and even the stock pickups sound great. I am very happy with it. Here are some pics.

Its all very nice and stuff, but is 6 strings really that constraining?
Oh, what scale is it?
-
Really just a new toy. I have been playing 7's for years and really just wanted to try an 8. Still most of my time is spent with 6's. Just like to have lots of options :) Scale length is 28.625".

What's the nut width on that badboy?!

I hear ya. I'm just being a dick. I have a 7, which I play one m3rd down from my normal guitars (in drop A#) to make ungodly powerchords between in and the bass in recordings, but I cant say that I use its 7-ness. i could do what I do with it on a 6. I even have it tuned so the top 6 strings are in 6 format with another 4th high on top of that cos I need it to replicate 6 string shapes I use!

errr...........
what does one play on a such a beast? clips please!
-
Wow... I struggle with just 6 strings! I honestly wouldn't know where to start.
-
I find 8's a bit like having a small car with a big engine, uneccessary but damn good fun!!
Enjoy :D

Whatever you like, in (almost) any octave you like :D
PS. I am assuming it's a low F#

Not to burst your bubble but I heard there were iffs with Agile 8s, but hopefully you didn't get one :)
'grats on the NGD.

I'm gassing for one of those Agile 7 strings, blue one with a maple 'board. So sexy - I don't even play br00talz but it's just really nice.

No major iffs really, just things like unmatched stripes on the neck throughs and dents etc, but that was on the first run, the second run (where this came from) seemed pretty perfect.

In all fairness, there's no reason why Dino's playing couldn't be done on a 6 string.
The same could be said of Meshuggah to some extent, their lead playing is rarely that high.
-
I think it depends how your brain works. Some people want to retain the ability to play their 6 string chord shapes. Indeed, one of the things I've found with 7 string playing is how some chord progressions are just easier to play with extra strings, as there's less horizontal movement.

Looks nice man, good to have another 8stringer on the board :) Got any pictures of the back?
-
Looks like a nice guitar :)
So how are these things tuned, is it a standard 6 in the middle with an extra low and an extra high string? Or is it more like a 7 but with another extra low string?

most of the ones I've seen have are a low B and a low F# strings
in the rusty cooley clip posted before have a low B and a high A, it's fan fretted so you can use a 0.008" string on the A, if the neck was longer you'd need an even thinner string and it would probably snap
yellowv: I really hate you!!!! :P what string gauge is on there, does the extra tension on the higher strings get in the way?

sweet :)

I'd love a go on one of these. So two NGD's in a month, nice! :D
-
3 NGD's in a month actually but there was a problem with one which is being sorted out. I tune it F#BEADGBE, but you could also go the other way and use an extra high string and tune BEADGBEA. I like the big motor in a small car analogy. Here is my car :)

I like it. If I was looking for an 8, Agile is probably the way I'd go as well.
I'm a seven string player too and when I got my first seven I used it almost just for playing the same riffs I would on a 6 but in a lower key, but still having the ability to play high for solos. As I got used to playing it I found that there was so many chords I could play on the 7 that I hadn't even thought about playing on a 6. You can play high harmonies and still have a low bass note (like an F chord at 5th position with a low F on the 7th string), and you have more freedom with chord shapes and extensions because you have more notes in the same area of the neck. So 7 and 8 string guitars aren't just for ze br00thals mettel although that is what they are most known for.

I am using Elixers .9-.42 w/ a .56 and .68 added.

Sick man :D8s are really getting popular lately it seems. Got mine on the way in a few months! How long's it taking to get used to the neck width?
-
i never felt the need to have more than 5 gears in my car... now i've got 6 gears and everytime i drive another car i try to put the 6th in... so it's just a matter of habits. BUT i won't EVER play an 8 string... too big and clumsy, and most of all i love horizontal playing (this is not a sexual metaphore... 8))!
