Title: Fusion-tastic!
Post by: MrBump on March 23, 2009, 09:11:16 PM
Love this.

Mr Moore during his "fusion" period...  It was the furious flurry of notes that he does so well that got me into him in the first place.

I could live without the drum solo though...

I don't think I've ever heard that before, although I think I have most of the stuff from that period on ancient vinyl.

Not sure... too much keyboardiness for me, and I find the guitar tone a bit too smooth.  But I enjoyed Paicey's drum solo!

I prefer this one from the same(?) show:

(Even though the song is virtually a rewrite of "Mistreated"!)

That's a great line-up. All of them are excellent players.

I think but may be wrong that it's from the Back on the Streets album. Been so long since I listened to it since I only have it on Vinyl.

I remember  buying and enjoying his first solo album / outing from which this came " Back On The Streets" . It was a mix of fusion, blues, Punk - and Ballad.

Also he did do a mid career album called something like ' A Different Beat " which I gather was relatively 'alternative'. That is why it seemed a bit rich when he gave Joe Bonammassa the bad word for " trying too many styles".

Ah, that's one of the ones I haven't got!

I think it's safe to say that right now "fusion" is DEFINITELY my least favourite genre of music.
I want my 7 minutes and 52 seconds back! >,,<
Hey, at least I gave it a shot!

Well done for giving it a try!

Back On The Streets had lots of this type of stuff on - I love the titles.  "Flight Of The Snow Moose", for example... Brilliant!

Huge Beck/Hammer influence there.

Didn't everyone wear two-sizes-too-small red T-shirts and blue leggings in 1983?  And get their hair cut by their mum?

I know I did.

Superb vid!

Don Airey is a close mate's uncle, which is pretty cool.

Keyboardist really stole the show for me. Awesome.
Gary's playing was great but so much of it was just random chromatic widdling - not cool.
And I never saw the attraction in drum solos - they're the least musical sounding things in the god damn world.

I'm not really a fusion person. I prefer rock with a few jazz elements. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuPJtyJh3Hk)

As for Gary himself I prefer his blues ballads - I'm probably gonna get yelled at but to me Still Got The Blues is a brilliant song.

Huge Beck/Hammer influence there.

Definitely - if I had started listening to it with my eyes shut I would have thought it was Beck/Hammer.

Never been able to get into Fusion..... my favourite guitarists include Moore, Beck, Guthrie Govan etc and although I can appreciate the skill/musicianship involved with their Fusion material it just leaves me cold.

Bring on the Rock please   :guitar4:

Yes, I was discussing G.M. some years ago with a workmate - and we both thought that Still Got The Blues  was his 'best' solo at the time. It is well structured, full of great technique, well paced and emotive / relevant to the song .

In a much more minimalistic way, his original 'Still In Love With You " solo on the Thin Lizzy 'Nightlife' album was an understated gem.  The ( now much more famous ) epic live version being of course  much more elaborate. On the  " Nightlife" original - it was just Gary, Brian Downey, and Phil Lynott /  Frankie Miller sharing vocals - a very good 'one guitar , two voices' rendering.   :)

Oops ! , Yes I see what you mean.  I was actually meant to be refering to the 'Back On The Streets' video further down the page - but erronously quoting references to 'Hurricaine' ...
