So im off travelling for a bit soon and as im only going to be able to really pickup acoustic guitars to take through countries with me im thinking of really giving slide a go for a few months whilst im off.
I've dabbled a bit in the past and know some very basic stuff but im wondering if anyone can recommend any decent tuition books for this?
Cheers

Open G tunings are popular for slide. Listen to The Bomber by Joe Walsh. As for books type slide guitar books in Amazon and take your pick.

I've looked for slide books on and off over the years - I've never found one that could show me what I wanted to know, so I've never bought one.
Most seem to be getting you into the scales and try to explain what some of shapes etc are. I'm not that sort of guitarist, I never use tab, etc... I can work things like that out for myself and get impatient trying to figure out what the book is trying to tell me! But if you do use tab etc for standard tunings, I'm sure most of the books have got something for you.
What I wanted, and you need as well, is "slide technique" - how to actually get a decent tone out of the blasted thing. And there are lots of decent tones. As far as I can tell, the only way to get yours is to listen closely to (and watch, if you can) slide-players that you like, and then keep experimenting/practicing until your left and right hand technique starts to produce these tones.
I'm not sure there's a quick way of doing this, but with this in mind, I'd suggest getting one of the books that come with a DVD perhaps?
Hope that helps :D

There is a reasonably good Warren Haynes book though I got it because it concentrates on standard tuning which, for operational reasons, suited me. It was a good source on ideas but I went off and did my own thing. I do play in open tuning but that is only at home. I can't be done with swapping guitars or re tuning live hence the desire to learn in standard tuning.

I have checked it and it is called "Warren Haynes Guide to Slide Guitar" snappily enough. Published by Cherry lane Music Company and cost me £12.99. A book and CD.

Stephan Grossman's Bottleneck Blues Guitar is a great DVD teaching the basics (it has a small book) and the first Bob Brozman DVDs from Homespun works well in conjunction with the Stephan Grossman DVD on technique.
Unfortunately not books, so unless you have an IPOD video you can travel with them - but they'll teach you the basics and then you can pretty much work from any book
