As some of you have gathered, Bob and I have been hammering out a new legra.
Well its all hammered and construction has started.
I was gonna unviel it, being all dramatic and shite, but I figure $% it, cant hurt to show you some woods. So this is the fretboard and the top.

Board is indian rosewood, top is cocobolo.
Bob hunted high and low for the top especially, and I've never in all my days seen anything like it. The necks going where the diamondy knot is.
The shape will be RG.
Now, I just need a way to freeze myself for about two months.
-
You and GuiTony will just have to keep sending each other consoling PMs :D
Nice looking hunks of wood there. We're talking more than 6 strings? I couldn't make my mind up whether the board looked wide and whether there was stuff to come off it when I suddenly went "D'Oh"
-
Whos guitony? CaptainDesslock is getting a legra built at the moment as well. Is that him?
Its a 6 stringer. 43mm at the nut.
-
Sexeh woods 8)

mystic woods PDT_003

Wow wow wow! love that Cocobolo!
-
8)
This guitar has quite a few more tricks up its sleeve, but that shitees staying classified.
-
Whos guitony?
He's the customer for this ongoing Wez build: http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16230.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=16230.0) I can just imagine him sat there with his legs crossed watching the story unfold
Wow wow wow! love that Cocobolo!
I thought of you the minute I saw the pictures :D
-
Ah, gotcha!
-
That be some nice Cocobolo.

I'm so easy

tease... we need details!!
-
It's all about the cocobolo, such a nice looking and feeling wood! Used it as the fretboard on a completed build, and got another in progress with another. Not enough appreciation for it I don't think :)
Keep us posted with the progress!
-
Whos guitony?
That'd be me :P
What sort of finish are you having on the beautiful cap?
-
Finish?
Whats a finish?
Its gonna be sealed. With oil. No more.
-
tease... we need details!!
Well....it'll have a 5pc through neck
And stuff.

That's the way I normally like them and that's they way that I normally do them too - but that's just because I'm a long way from mastering the art of anything more complicated.
Anything other than a clear finish on that wood would be heresy.
The/my Wez build will be slightly more than oiled though :D
-
sweet :D that's very nice indian rosewood too, i thought it was something else when i first saw it.
-
Nice sound Cocobolo, the name i mean and nice looking timber.
-
Cheers folks.
Now, can someone run me over, not too badly, just so I have a nice 10 week coma?
Oh, any name ideas? I think it needs a name. That there top looks a bit like a magnetic field, but also a bit like jupiters atmosphere...maybe something around that. Dont wanna be too cheesy, mind.

For some reason, all those swirls in the timber made me think of this:

¬¬
Bah, screw it:
The build is:
That there top, which is 5mm
on
three layered body, from the back
7.5mm maple
27.5mm meranti
5mm maple
+ top
Beveled edges, 15mm deep, 10mm across, so you can see the layering front and back, and heel-less.
Ergonomics cut out to also allow the layering to show, and allow the layering to make the tops of the horns trapezoids.
5pc through:
1/3 meranti
1/6 maple
1/6 walnut
1/6 maple
1/3 meranti
This is a (completely horrific) sketch I did when bob and I were working it out. It'll look, in general form, close to this. But not like a chimp drew it (it looks so much worse after scanning as well :(), and with ultra-cool woods. Didnt know the thickness of the layers as the time, adn thought the FB was gonna be ebony; bob came up with the one you see out of the blue later.

Looks awesome! Just this bridge is weird
But it will be killer!
pickups?

Oh and bridge is schaller hannes, nut; earvana, 24 fret; 6000 gauge. It will also have pickups, yes.

Indeed.
I changed my mind. *shrug*. The finished guitar will still be plenty unvielable. Its hard to picture the finished article from this lot anyway (or thats what I've been struggling with for a few weeks now!)

lol, well compared to yours I'd almost feel bad mine has such "normal" wood if it wasn't for the fact it was painted )
-
Ok, I'm late to this party, all I can say is, WOW! Mark you are going to be one happy bunny when that thing is finished :) I guess you'll be taking some time off work around the delivery day?
-
Fantastic!
Oh, you should have seen the diabolical pictures I drew when designing my axe with Wez! Those are positively beautiful!
Although I can't help feeling it should have fanned frets :)

you could paint it in fluo pink. or yellow. with a black plastic pickguard. and furry pink knobs (i hope someone ever invented furry knobs). it would look great this way.
:P
phil's idea is not bad, not at all... you could call it "the scream"...
-
Thanks guys :D
No fanned frets, and 25.5 scale. I did as much looking as I could, and I dont figure the scale is the dominant factor in the tightness. String tension (which is related to scale of course, but it aint one and the same) and your playing and amp are the biggest things, as far as I can tell. The MDV602 (current legra) is tighter than most baritones I can find clips of, and this is gonna be tighter sounding still
So I went with 25.5 to keep familiar playbility (I do quite a bit of reach stuff on low frets as well, so it could amputate some of my playing too) and in case I ever want to tune back up to, well, something else, thats not drop A#.

What about a ZZ Top beard finish? You could save some dough and make from an old pub table. Sling a bucket of Copydex over it then kick it along the floor of a Barbers Shop at around 5:00pm on a Saturday afternoon. Viola!
-
 Jonny, have you been playing with your koch again? You know how overexcited you get!
What about Aurora?
-
Looking forward to seeing that, Mark - Bob makes a damn fine geetar...
What's the ETA?

Yeah, makes sense :)
Plus if everyone started getting multiscale guitars, mine wouldn't be such a novelty any more ;)
Can't wait to see how this pans out!

Well, a multiscale was never what I wanted anyway, so ner :P
It'll be 8 to 10 weeks as the optimistic-realistic lead time.
Do I hear a second for "Aurora"?
And against?
-
aurora is a great name.
or eos, that's the same in greek, but it would sound like a camera, then...
up up aurora!
-
5pc through:
1/3 meranti
1/6 maple
1/6 walnut
1/6 maple
1/3 meranti
is is me or does this add up to 7/6's! I guess it is really
1/3 meranti
1/9 maple
1/9 walnut
1/9 maple
1/3 meranti
Other than that I am sure it will look great, though I'm never sure about lots of laminates because of all the glue (it is probably a leftover from when all the cheap guitars were plywood!).
-
Its more than your average neck!!
No, its not you, I just made a n00b error.
Auroras a leading contender so far...
-
i'm starting to think i should give my guitars some name, after all... i keep calling them with numbers. and the worst part is that they never answer.
-
Its officially called Aurora :D
-
I was gunna say call it "ish" then your rig is ENGLish :)

Algol
Betelgeuse (or beetlejuice as you prefer)
Draco
they're cool...
-
wow, that looks awesome (the sketch you did). those ergonomic cutaways should be great to show off the woods and construction... and meranti, eh? i know bob was using some of it for those new CNC superstrats he was building, but i think i'll go with the swamp ash one...
no opinion on the name, i'm not much good at naming stuff... aurora is pretty cool, though... just reminds me of that sketch in the simpsons with skinner and superintendent chalmers...
-
Oh, no more names! Its decided - Aurora.
Thanks dave :D
We thought that design out long and hard, mind. Its gonna rule when its done. The compound body and contouring was Bobs idea, too. I initially just wanted something with a cool top on it: that seems so long ago now  I just sharpened curved edges into bevels. We entertained even making it...lets see, what would it have been...7 layered, with 0.6mm veneers of black stained sycamoore in between all the other layers. Thought that might be a bit 'busy' though.
Going with...? Bob mentioned you were interested, in passing; is it certain? (I too am most intrigued by them).
Oh, swamp ash rocks. Underrated tonewood, IMO - clear, bell highs, fast attack and tight bass.
-
Aurora is a family of mitotic kinases, many of which are considered good anti-cancer drug targets, due to their involvement in chromosomal splitting during mitosis.
I approve of the name.
Roo

Whats with all these alternate Auroras? What ever is wrong with the earths magnetic field curving the path of charged particles in the solar wind toward the magnetic poles and said particles ionising molecules in earths upper atmosphere leading to electron recombination and pretty lights? The original Aurora, and best (even including this guitar!!)
Oh, glad you like it :D
-
i wouldn't say 100% that it's certain, but i'm very interested, if that makes sense. basically, if he can accommodate the specs i want in the run for the same/similar price, then i'm very interested. I'm considering the swamp ash one because, as you say, it seems to be a well-regarded tonewood (and would be a little different to anything i currently have), meranti i'm not sure about because i don't think i've tried it (and also I'm not sure if i like the looks of it on a superstrat with a transparent finish  ), and i don't want basswood as i already have a basswood RG...
I must actually email him again, have thought of a couple of other quick questions (as usual  )...
and you're right, bob has good ideas, mine was never going to have the natural finish back until bob suggested it, and it rules. :)
-
I dont know details about what sort of level of flexibility there will be with the new PG600s either, save that it has to be bolt on, they're RG-esque and they have Kahlers. I imagine, now, this is just me being a presumptuous git and taking wild guesses, that you can *probably* get any woods you want within that construction (dont see why not; just stick block of a different wood in the CNC...but then the words "dont see why not" have so often been my downfall  ).
Throughs; no (we talked about that one), set neck, multi ply necks, tops, different bridge routings, no bridge routing, scale lengths, FB radii, neck profiles, headstock designs, pickup routes, controls and control locations and all the rest that need some structural change, a route or a different measurment or holes or whatever - I have no idea.
I suppose a lot of it depends on how many programs for the CNC there will be. However many there are to start with, I *guess* that number will increase, but spending ages programing loads of shapes in would defeat the purpose - keeping the costs down. All I really know is - Kind of RG shaped, bolt on, no throughs, kahler. Havent the foggiest on cost either, didnt ask. Any idea what ones gonna go for?

Looks like a nice one. I agree they could have made more of an effort naming such a vast and stunning discovery.
I came up with a new angle. This Cocobolo sounds kind of sexy and I'm sure woman would look at you on stage with such an object of desire wantonly. So why not call it 'La curación lesbiana' :D
I'll fully understand if you keep the name Areola though.

Yeah they would probably. Phil Campbell form Motorhead uses one I think. Vile things. What is it with some of these guitar builders these days?
I hope this guitar turns out the way you see it in your minds eye, it sounds like its going to be beautiful.
Perhaps I should buy some exotic tone woods before its banned from sale in the UK.

Any idea what ones gonna go for?
yeah, i think you've got it more or less right. things which don't involve any extra cost/reprogramming etc. are more or less possible, i think.
i'll pm you with the cost, as i've no idea if bob has made it public or not yet. :)
