I'm having a bit of a pickup swap around and I've ended up with a pair of TV Jones Classics (neck and bridge) lying around. They're humbucker sized Filter'trons so will drop striaght into a humbucker route.
I'm thinking of picking up a cheap guitar to put them in, but I'm after something different and I have no idea what I'm looking for! The specs I have are:
* Something with a Malcolm Young/Billy Gibbons vibe, not necessarily a Gretsch
* Something chambered or semi-hollow
* Doublecut bodies generally work better for me, but I haven't ruled out a singlecut
* 25" or 25.5" scale length
* Wrapover bridge
* Twin humbuckers to be swapped for the TV Classics
* Master volume, master tone, 3-way toggle layout
Is there anything like that out there?

Just give up and get another PRS!
You know you want to :P
-
Peerless? Or one of those wacky Eastwood designs?
-
Peerless could be good? I'll have to look at the model range....
-
there is if someone builds it ;)

Not pretty, but it might have the right kind of vibe:

If you're going for Ibanez:

However it fails at the scale length and look, lol..

Wasn't you building one alike this? Is this a order from someone or just a build to keep??
Can't think in anything different from the Gretsches... :?

epiphone dot studio?
or a gordon smith?

prs se hollowbody?
That's a good suggestion! :D
Or maybe one of these? Doesn't match all the specs though:

i started one as carving practice... never got around to finishing it.

Eggle Wave?
-
What about picking up one of the old DeArmonds? I think they did a chambered one Gretchy style? M77 maybe?
-
Give us a shout if you change your mind and think of selling them
-
Thanks for all the suggestions guys :)
Some of the ones you mention have 24.75" scale length, which rules them out for me. It's just a bit too cramped and spongy sounding for my tastes. Also, the Eastwoods/Coronados etc haven't got humbucker routes which is what I need for the TV Jones'. They're the size of a 'bucker, not a Filter'tron.
A custom from Wez would be great, but as this is a bit of an experiment I don't want to spend big bucks. I might not like it!!!
The PRS SE Hollowbody is a good suggestion, I can't believe I didn't think of that myself! It's a bit sophisticated though maybe? I was thinking something a little more quirky? Like a Duesenberg maybe?

Duesnberg...oh yeah..and blue sparkle nice choice
-
Bit pricey though, I'm not looking to spend that much....
-
try to find second hand or cheaper end the peerless are good..also some of the more normal italia's tried a italia that was a semi..double cut was very nice...also tried the peerless version of white falcon..if it wasn't white huge and had gold hardware would have been perfect *L*
-
Something from Hagstrom maybe?

I think they're pretty basic and stripped-down really. Instant familiarity for you, as a PRS man (although they're not going to feel as nice as your US ones, and the flat top might seem a bit weird).
And they have the advantage of a standard rear-access control cavity, so no dragging parts through f-holes to do a pickup change! :)
I have a suspicion you'll do what I've done may times - hatch the idea of getting a "cheap" guitar as an experiment, then think about it too much and end up with something for three times the price!
-

Yeah, you should try some Hagströms. They have alot of cheaper end stuff that looks nice, and the one i tried in the store was amongst the best playing guitars i tried there. the Hagström Viking is hollow with f-holes and double cut. Gibson ES style, but the shape is a bit different, however, those i think are 24.75. Then they have a few les paul style guitars that are a bit longer scale, 648mm (i guess thats 25"?), but no f-holes
But if you can find a hagström that suits your needs, i think it could be worth a try, but maybe i was just lucky with the one i played at the store.

Gretsch's are no good - my pickups won't fit.
Those Kings look interesting....

Doesn't have the wraparound bridge, but it's damn sexy!

Hmmmm. It may have to be a Duesy...
-

So anything by a particular brand, and not on spec? That helps loads, cheers!
-
Umm........ last time I checked, they only made one semi hollow double cut, the H-535. I had one, very nice, very impressive quality.
-
I started one as carving practice... never got around to finishing it.
Seems you should finish it quickly! :P
I like that King guitars too!

I misread you had HB sized ones. Sorry.
In that case look for an electromatic version of the Malcolm Young called the G1910.

Also in natural.

And we ALL know what usually follows that sentence ( eventually ) ....
Oh lawdy, lawdy ...

I prefer the natural though if there giving them away any colour will do

It's not giving me GAS, but that is mighty cool. 8)
So are we talking £1500 suddenly, or do Gretsch have a budget range?
-
That one is the budget range. This model is not made anymore so you have to look around. It has a bolt-on neck and it's not semi-hollow like a 'real' Jet but it is chambered AFAIK.
If you can find one, they usually go for $300 - $450.
-
haha, you have a problem...
i'd second the eggle which headtheball suggested (though i haven't tried the waves)- if you look hard enough, you can often find them NOS for £500 or so, even less if you go second-hand. you might have to hold out a while for the wraparound bridge, though.
absolutely no idea how one would sound with tv jones pickups, though, i've never tried them...
-
had one of the budget range gold sparkle pro jet..wish I had kept it..great guitar once set up properly...get visiting right, mate has it now....mmm got gas now to buy another...only downside..may need slight routing for the humbuckers
