I will be joining you soon with the first ever angled BK  however, I think I prefer Warpigs to Nailbombs from what clips I've heard but Tim has said the range of an 8 string can effect the sound in a negative way on Nailbombs... Think I'll have to speak to the man himself soon enough but I don't know if any has either of these 2 pickups in an 8 string on here to talk about it
-
I tune my 7 to drop F# in 5th/4th/4th/M3rd/4th/4th
Does that count
-
Oh, I dont wish to burst your bubble, but the Knuckldusters on nathan sheperd guitars are the first angled BKs :(

have enough problems with 6

He may well suggest going lower output like the black dogs on my 6-string barry. Check sig for how this can sound ( no additional overdrive or distortion in those clips). My words of advice: keep an open mind about lower output pickups! Even if high output pickups would work just fine, don't think that the lower output ones won't work just as well, or potentially better!

I've got an 8 string, although I don't play it all that much- I'm starting to try and use it more, but the 'traditional' 8 string music just isn't my thing. Can get some killer Sunn0))) style riffs and sounds out of it though :)

Complete with BKP!

Hm, i think an 8 string along the lines of low B to high A would be most interesting. Then i guess a 25.5 scale would be enough, and a 7 gauge high a would probably have decent tension.
Or am i way off?

That is a sick guitar. It is actually my buddy Nick's. He is a member here (Vik Deakins) and a bareknuckle dealer. Here is a clip he recorded with that guitar. It sounds sick as all hell. http://www.nemecide.com/axefx_02.mp3 (http://www.nemecide.com/axefx_02.mp3) He just lowered the price on it. He has over $2000 in it between the guitar, BKP and custom pickguard, and it's like brand new. He's only selling it b/c it hurts his hand to play it. Also I play an 8. Here is a pic of mine.

I have the Pro version of the guitar in the above post. It's pretty neat! It's out of commission right now, though, because I'm trying to get new locking tuners on it. Anybody know for sure if the Grover Roto-Grip Minis are direct replacement for the regular non-locking midsize Rotomatics?
Anyway, I plan to put a C-Pig in mine. What kind of specs does your 8 have?
-
I have an 8 that I built myself a few years ago. At first I used pickups that I also built for it, which were okay, but in the end I replaced them with BKP's. So now it has a Warpig bridge and Cold Sweat neck, which sound awesome!

That's nice! Where did you get the bridge? I didn't think Hipshot was making them until more recently than that.

Well, it was probably about 3 years ago I built the guitar and I don't think Hipshot had been building 8 string bridges for long at the time, but that is what it is. I built the guitar as much for the challenge of building as for the guitar itself. It has a 28.5 inch scale length but I moved the bridge 1.5 inches back into the body, so the 12th fret is in the same place relative to the body which makes it feel much like a normal Ibanez RG, and keeps it from being neck heavy. It does sound huge - the extra scale length and the amount of mass in the neck gives it masses of tone, even on stuff played on the top 6 strings!
The current project is a Les Paul type 7 string, but after that I have a fan-fret 7 planned which should be fun to build! Tim already seems happy to talk about an angled pickup for the bridge, so I'll be interested to see yours Philosoful!

Nice. Mine's barely longer than that at 28.625". I love what it does to the low strings, but the effect on the high strings I'm not so fond of. I think I'd really love an 8 with fanned frets to get things working well across the whole range.

Thats the EMG's. With passives they sound great across the whole tonal range. I feel the same way about my loomis as you do with your Pro.
-
Mine has passives, though.

Oh yeah you have the dual pro. I haven't heard too much feedback about the Cepheus pickups in the pro yet, but this doesn't sound too good. Many guys including myself love them in the standard.

What do you guys think of the new Agile Septor and Interceptor 8s? 8 string Kahlers look intersting :o

They look awesome and the price is amazing, but nobody will see one until July nobody knows how they will be for sure.

I never noticed the answers to this thread so *bump*!
Cheers Tom! Me too

That would probably not be short enough for a high A, or you may have to use such a tiny string that replacing it would soon become quite tedious.
Serratus, how is the Warpig? Do you think the range effects it's tone badly and does it get distorted on clean?? I'd really love a good response as I'm thinking of changing my mind from Nailbombs to Warpigs... Either way I shall have coil taps so perhaps this would help if it does distort from the hotness.
-
Pigs can clip a clean channel, yeah. If you have a clean gain, use that, if not, roll back the volume. Their clean sound is great (not "for a metal pickup" its just great).
The pig can handle the lowest tunings I've thrown at it - drop A, no problem. Its not all that tight (rather a lot tighter than a nailbomb though, which seem to have about 'normal' tightness - most BK high outputters are much tighter than you'll be used to playing, and the pig is middle ground on that scale) but its easily tight and clear enough to take a low B/A. More, I daresay.
Dont believe people that tell you its loose or dark. Its niether.
-
Well it was Tim saying the sound in extended range instruments = sceptical.
Bad news; Tim just phoned me and the 25 degree angle is too steep =( Lundgren or maybe swineshead I think now. I'm just abit worried Lundgren = too scooped...
-
Well thats just my experience. Holds up well.
Holds up best to detuning = painkiller.
-
er... coil tapping, is that the same as coil splitting? I'm really curious at the moment about how coil splitting sounds for clean, I'm used to just using the neck pickup, does coil splitting half the output? or is it just more single coil sounding?
MDV: I thought the warpig was the tightest bkp, or am I getting mixed up with the ceramic pig?
-
have enough problems with 6
6!
I have enough trouble with 4!
-
Wouldnt go with swinsehead for a top class instrument. They sound great, but the build quality isnt there.
The PK is the tightest BK, followed by the MM, followed by the C-Pig.
they're all very tight, but the PK most so. MM and cpig are really close, but I recon the MM takes it.
-
There are other reasons it does better in low tunings, too. Its lack of significant compression and its high-attack high mid, namely.
-
Remember my 8 = High A not Low F#. However, that's all useless because it's not going to be a BK any more
-
You could see if bulldog could do you an extremist or black label as you require.

Oh, and tapping and splitting arent the same - splitting is using one coil of a humbucker and only works with humbuckers, tapping is taking a second output off a shorter legth of the coil and getting a lower gain sound from it, and works with anything.
-
ah so it's like playing with the volume control on a guitar? but without the faffing of getting it to the right setting each time?
-
No, because it uses a shorter wind you get more high end and dynamics that arent returned to the sound by rolling off the volume.
-

I spy no 7/8 string pickups thus no experience with them presumably... hmmmm. Think I might have to Lundgren it, Conklin work with Lundgren so it is way easier for them/they already have angles and such sorted, it's just the scooped-ness.
-
Custom wind?
-
Custom wind?
Bill (Conklin) is going to email Johan for me and ask if he can do just that on a pair of M8s... shall see. Bill says he's never had any customer return and say about their scooped-ness but I've heard quite contrasting reviews online and in a few youtubes. Not to doubt Bill, the guy has an incredible knowledge of guitars, however, not to doubt myself.

I've not noticed any problems with my Warpig 8, it sounds great in all situations. Having said that, obviously I only have experience with my one 8-string; if Tim thinks there might be problems then I'm sure he's right. I guess maybe it also depends on alot of other factors (strings, wood, playing style, amp, fx, etc, etc). Personally I think (at the moment anyway) that I prefer my nailbomb to my warpigs, but that's obviously only down to taste (and mood, etc, lol).

Hi !
I am a 8 string player.
I have a website about 7 and 8 Strings where a share some informations about this.
