Title: BKP-91 and Mississippi Queen shipped Wednesday!!
Post by: Copperhead on March 27, 2009, 10:19:46 PM
Yaaaay!!! :D
Just got a reply from Tim that the 91 for the new Strat, and a MQ shipped!

I'm down to two Wolfgangs, sold the rest. The Standard has another companies' aftermarket pups which are fine. I tried the same set in the STP model and the bridge sounds not so good....so I'm moving the neck pup to the bridge, and the neck gets the MQ.....hope it's wonderful!!

My B.K.P always seem to  have arrived within a couple of days (in the U.K.) - great service.

I just signed in to say that I hope you enjoy your M.Q. as much as I did mine. It will be interesting to read what you thing of them ( and the 91 ) for your applications.

Enjoy !  :)

OK, here's the complete story.....
In one of my Wolfgang USA Standards (Floyd) I replaced the stock pups with DiMarzio Air Zone/Tone Zone...this is before I heard of Bare Knuckle, please forgive me...
I did the same in one of my Wolfgang USA STPs (stop tail piece) but the Tone Zone in the bridge did not sound good at all, the Air Zone in the neck was fine.
So last night I moved the Air Zone to the bridge and put the MQ in the neck. (just a little grinding and drilling....)
WOW!!!! sounds awesome, blends with humbucker very, very well! This was low volume cleans to mid gain. I've never had a P-90 pup before, awesome! Like a Strat on steroids. Very fat and creamy but Fender-y top end clarity and bite. I am surprised at how nice it works with both pups together.
I'm using it at the show on Wednesday and will report back how it did at stage volume. But for now I'm very pleased with the results.

Your description of the M.Qs sounds delicioulsy familiar, but as I used mine at low volume ( and zero distortion ) settings of the amp - it will be very interesting to see how you find them at 'full tilt' ....  :)

they're fuzzy as hell! but in a very nice and sabbathy way... they're unusable for modern metal unless you want to get really harsh black metal tones, but for doom and stoner they're killers!

Ummmmm.....
Little bit disappointed. Very bassy, less top end sizzle than I expected. Sounds more like a humbucker and less like a single coil, not exactly what I was after.
On the positive side, it's very loud. I use the volume alot to control my tone. This pickup does not like that at all. Must be at full volume on the pot. When rolling the volume back to clean up the tone a little, you lose all the treble. I scooped my EQ a bit and turned down the amp and things were better.
Very clear if you can back off on the bass and mids a bit.
I'm not done playing with it, gonna give it another go as things were progressively getting better throughout the night.
No hum or noise, very happy about that. Very detailed and clear tones, you can hear your fretting hand on the neck and every picking nuance as well.

well, they sound partly like single coils and partly like humbuckers, you can't directly compare them with classic strat tones, but it's strange you find them bassy... they're warm, of course, but they've got plenty of treble too. or maybe it's because i've got them in a neckthrough and this brightens things a bit...

I'm thinkin' a 22 cap on the tone pot may help. Or I just may rewire for two vol pots no tone cap. I'm gonna go cheap and easy an just wire vol pot only for now, see if taking the cap out brightens things up a bit.

Hi, either a 0.015 or 0.022 MFD cap would be ok but nothing higher. Also 600K pots would be ideal. What do you have at the moment?

Stock Wolfgang electronics; pots are 500, tone cap is 47 I think.

OK!  :D
Disconnecting the tone circuit fixed the problem! (this guitar is very bassy however) Plenty of bright top end sparkle!
However, if I want a tone pot, am I screwed? Should I put a .022mfd cap on? Can I put a push-pull on to switch off the tone circuit at will?

Also, this creates another problem - the bridge pickup! The Air Zone is tooooooo wimpy now to balance volume-wise with the MQ in the neck!
What do I want in the bridge? Cold Sweat? another MQ? Help!
Thanks

what sort of sound are you looking for? If you want clarity and a pleasant crunch, plus a pretty fat sound, I'd suggest an MQ wound to about 10-11k.

in my opinion you have at least 4 valid options.

1) another MQ (the bridge is alnico V, it's very bright and screams nicely whith high gains)
2) a cold sweat (but then you'll have a dominant humbucker tone with a p90 for cleans... anyway it's very bright and couples greatly with the MQ)
3) a Pig90  , and this is the nastier option... listen to tom's samples, it sounds killer!
4) a Mule (to achieve true humbucker tone in the same vintage range)

personally i'd go for the Pig90, but it depends on what you want to play with that guitar...

It's there, and it's been done before. It just doesn't have a page on the site yet. If you like, you can email tim with questions or just keep looking around on the forum. I'd suggest both =D

look for _tom_ , he's done at least one... Pig90 is an over(and over and over)wound MQ brought to Warpig standards in terms of DCR (we talk about 21k!)... my neck PiG90 (i prefer to write it this way, looks more like MiG... :)) has the hot and grindy tone you can expect from a warpig BUT with the attack and articulation of a single coil... it's perfect for stoner, doom and sludge, but maybe it's overkill for your needs...

OK - I love the MQ so far but it's a little too "messy" in the bass when pushed too hard. Works well with low gain/clean, gets just a bit fuzzy and fattens rhythms up great on the clean channel.
Anyways, I do need something tighter for the bridge, so I think maybe the Pig90 is out. Also must sound good clean as well as on the lead channel. Must blend well with the MQ without a volume drop. (MQ is VERY loud)
Cold Sweat, Nail Bomb? Any else I should consider?

Have you tried adjusting the pickup height? I find my MQ pretty tight, with a rat with the gain up pretty high it still stays clear. I know P90s are meant to be fat, but mine has remarkable clarity.

Treble and mids are very clear, but the bass notes start to distort early. This guitar is very bassy. Pickups are direct mount, can't lower the MQ any further.
