Title: Favorite Custom Guitars?
Post by: SRChrono on March 28, 2009, 08:06:40 AM
I'm not sure if many people have heard of them, but my dream guitar is made by Brian Wicks. Unfortunately, he changed his website up recently and only has a picture one one guitar up in the photo gallery. Just wondering what other people liked.

Actually found a couple more pics on the myspace page.

Randy Parsons.

That's the guy who makes Jack white's guitars like the Triple Jet Copper Top.

Legra, easily :D

Followed, purely by the ideas behind the guitars (in some cases) and looks (in others), in no particular order. Oh, and all these are on the list because I still havent played any, so they havent been thrashed by my legra and I can still believe they at least have the potential for the same order of magnitude of awesomeness.

Ran
KxK
Blackmachine
WezV
Hufschmid
Mayones
Rek

Were I to get a custom thats not a Legra (which is rather unlikely) it would probably be a Wez or a Ran...a rek or a blackmachine as the outside contenders.

Not wanting to grovel to our fellow forum members  :P , but if I was ever to get a custom it would be a Feline.

Jackson custom shop - especially pre-2002 before Fender came along & took away some of my favourite options :(

EDIT to add: I also really like the Feline guitars I've played & can imagine several things he might build for me :)

I have 3 WezV's, 3 Will Scott's, 2 Nial McDunnough, 3 Bravewoods and also a feline modified neck.  I also have about 10 Warmoth guitars that I have put together myself.  Each of them has their own features that I wanted (or could never afford in an original).  All of them are great makers as any of their guitars will prove.  As someone who has over 60 guitars, I would never limit myself to one brand and the same is true for custom makers.  What I can say is that going to a custom builder will get you something that you can't get off the shelf and if you have some experience of playing and know what you want, then a custom guitar will really get you that extra that you are looking for.

lets see... its more a case of who would be building what as i have quite a list

Multiscale from Perry Ormsby http://www.ormsbyguitars.com/
A singlecut by Scott French, probably headless http://www.scottfrench.com/
A semi from David Myka, http://www.mykaguitars.com/
A bass from Alan Cringean, http://www.acguitars.co.uk/index.php
A bravewood esquire, http://www.bravewoodguitars.co.uk/

that would be a nice little collection

A bit hard to research / narrow down for me - as mine would be probably be one of the bespoke ( probably U.S.A ) based  'archtop' Jazz  Guitar makers.

This remains completely speculative and largely academic though, as unlike asking for a quality but still affordable solid body or flat top hollow from Feline  e.t.c.  I would probably have to sell my house to pay for what I like.

( Meanwhile, thank goodness for top quality, Far eastern factory built guitars that just need B.K.Ps adding ! )

As for ' in the real world' solid body / hollow flat top guitars - I ( with all respects to the craftsmanship of WezV ) like the aesthetics of Feline guitars seen on this forum .  :)

I've always liked John Bolin's work - the stuff he's built for Billy Gibbons over the years is great!

^ haha, awesome description under your avatar, dave

i like my legra, it's excellent. i also tried a tele made by a guy over here, which was very nice, but i've only seen two of his guitars, and both were teles... i like teles, but not enough to pay the kind of money needed for a custom-made one.

haven't tried any of the others, unfortunately. :(

A: As someone who has over 60 guitars,

B: I would never limit myself to one brand and the same is true for custom makers.

C: What I can say is that going to a custom builder will get you something that you can't get off the shelf and if you have some experience of playing and know what you want, then a custom guitar will really get you that extra that you are looking for.

A: I dont think my house has space for 60 guitars! Oh, I'd certainly TRY to get them in, but I wouldnt be able to move around!

B: This is a tricky. Custom stuff is by definition sight-unseen. You dont really know what youre going to get till its in your hands. Could be a Legra or Wez or Feline, could be an Ed Roman, or even Eric Devries. I'm gonna call it "Rhythm in Jump. Dancing Close to You" syndrome. You may not get quite what you planned for!

Without vast amounts of spare cash around a custom is a bit of a risk. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to afford to take chances with new builders, some cant. Plus, regardless of the financial outlay, we'd all love to try new builders with every giutar, but theres a matter of trust and knowing what youre going to get, both in quality and in how well it achieves what you set out to do with it.

For me getting my first custom was a decision that I very carefully went into, and I very carefully selected who would build it. I now know that I made good choices then, but I dont know that I'd make as good a choice with the second one. Perhaps yes, perhaps no. The only way I think you can know is to play one of their guitars, and by the nature of the beast, thats very hard to do (and even then, that doesnt mean that they're going to be able to achieve what you want with your particular guitar).

I have few biasses with produciton stuff - I just buy guitars I like. Its easy, cos you can try them out. Some manufacturers are...how shall we say, more likely to make a good guitar than others, but its possible, in theory at least, to get a good guitar from almost any of them. Because with custom you dont get to try them, I'm personally much more cautious.

C: Yep. Thats pretty much it - havent found what youre looking for in produciton stuff? Have a good idea of what you want and a good idea of what affects a guitars performance? Go custom.

You guys have some awesome sites and guitars. I'd really like to get a custom in the next decade but it would be difficult to find ones to play without travel.

I've only tried a Feline, a Blackmachine and Tims custom Les Paul (Foster?) with the Miracle Man. They are great and once you feel that sort of quality, you don't forget it. Seeing the prices of named model guitars and custom shop then its cheaper to go with the builders like Feline. Steve Jones (The Sex Pistols) Custom Les Paul (the one he robbed) 3.2 grand? Jeff Beck Les Paul, 11 grand? Bollocks to that!

Custom guitars you say?

I'm familiar with most "custom makers" as I spent countless hours searching before finally deciding on one to work with, but let me toss out some interesting ones-

Hmmm......

Mansons http://www.mansons.co.uk (http://www.mansons.co.uk)
Feline http://www.felineguitars.com (http://www.felineguitars.com)
BlackMachine www.blackmachine.net]http://]www.blackmachine.net (http://)
Legra http://www.legraguitars.co.uk (http://www.legraguitars.co.uk)
DeTemple http://www.detempleguitars.com/ (http://www.detempleguitars.com/)

all of which are top draw, Legra is my personal favorite though :) (the only one I've bought a guitar from now that I think about it!) I know there are one or two other luthiers in this forum but I'm not so sure of their websites :(

Mansons built the infamous Mattocasters-
(http://www.musewiki.com/images/Obw01.jpg)

BlackMachine makes these shred beasties-
(http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh76/Nollythegreat/B6/HPIM0543.jpg)

Feline can get pretty cool-
(http://www.felineguitars.com/guitar_images/Lion%20-%20Emerald/Emerald-lion-front-726.jpg)

and Legra can build anything-!
(http://www.legraguitars.co.uk/images/guitar/ca622.jpg) (http://www.legraguitars.co.uk/images/guitar/dn126.jpg)

and DeTemple doesn't want you taking pics of their website....sooo...just pretend its beautiful

Those DeTemple ones  are interesting.  Look very nice, but it did make me wonder what i could charge if i was 40 years older.   Maybe i should be wondering what i will be able to charge in 40 years ;)

DeTemple isn't that hard to work around... Attached is one nice looking tele (Roo can $%&# right off)

Personally i don't care too much for custom guitars. I'm a simple man of simple tastes. Though I love the natural stuff Wez does (that beastly strat thing with MMs) and the Feline Lions. One day would love a flat top lion jr, but for now i'm happy with my off the peg guitars.

The leopard print Jackson modified on the feline guitars site looks cool and good value but there are no details about it only a picture.

I think I have a friend that would want the tweaked SG !!!

If my wife keeps up playing I think I will treat her to a feline -- just the name alone would have her sold on one!

I don't have a custom, but I think if I were going to get one it would be a BlackMachine, WezV or Feline.
(Stock forumite choices I know, but for good reason!)

For me it would have to be a Feline or a Wez. Having met both I would feel very comfortable with either building me a guitar.

Thanks for the kind words
The Leopard print Jackson is an old San Dimas Jackson  from about 1984
It originally was black with a grid pattern on it and had 3 single coils
Body is made from Alder

I used the neck to make a Jackson Rhoads out of back in the early /mid 90s - came out really well
I made a new neck many years later - great playing neck - 3 piece maple, rosewood board , Dunlop 6100 fretwire
Ihad my airbrush artist friend Nick Smith airbrush a finish on it (he's the one who also did my Judge Dredd artwork.)

Guitar has an original Floyd and BKP pickups on it (Miracle man & 2 trilogies)

the only full custom guitar i have is my black feline flying v (v-line), and very nice it is too! so i'll go with that :)

i don't have a guitar which was specifically custom built with me in mind though, the v-line is an ex-demo model which I eventually installed EMGs in and then asked Jonathan to rout it for an 18v battery compartment.

i'd like a Flying V XPL, but the right one never comes up. perhaps i'd have one of these as a custom build eventually.

edit: perhaps in swamp ash

Blackmachine user here... Mainly because I met Doug when our old bands rehearsed at the same studio! There's a disproportionate number of Blackmachine users amongst guys who used to play at that place. ;)

That was, what, 7 years ago? Ugh, time flies.

For a while, I thought that '58 style korina V Jonathan is building was going to turn out to be yours!  I guess that would be my dream V.

no, its not mine.. the '58 V is a cool style, but i prefer the '67 or '83

i have an epiphone '58 which was my first guitar. i sometimes think it would be nice to have a bit better '58, but then my epiphone is a real good one.

i always ask jonathan about the '58 whenever i pass by his shop though :)
