Post by: Spitfire on March 28, 2009, 09:39:29 AM
they have rocketed!! i got my jap sg about 18 months ago for £350 (be it used). i think the RRP on it was about £600 at the time... but looking at the tokai site the new rrp is £975... thats a huge price rise!! HERE (http://www.tokai-guitars.co.uk/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=25&category_id=15&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=31)

thats knocking on gibson SG standard prices! almost.... damn this recession.

Yeah... i think ibanez have had the biggest increase. At least with the new signature models with INSANE prices.

Though, about 2 years ago i saw SG standards for 650 new... more often 700. So i guess they've always been about the same, price wise.

You're making me want a Tokai SG again!

Are you sure it's the same model? Tokai do a number of different price point guitars, all jap builds though.

That's true, just looking at the UK site they have the SG35 and SG50 (both Korean, or are they Chinese now?) in the budget range, then the Japanese SG85, SGP90, SG100, and SG175.

The UK prices are high though!  I had an SG-75, which is the equivalent of the SG85, cost me a little under £500 and they're listing it for £780.  And I have an SG-155 (now SG175) which cost me nearly £900 from Japan and they're listing it for £1,375!!  :o

 Maybe I should sell the SG-155... the problem is, people don't appreciate the model differences so I'd be lucky to get £500 for it.

check how the pound has been doing versus the yen over the past year. it was bound to happen, unfortunately. :(

Everything imported will be really expensive next year... I'm doing most of my purchases now before the prices go up. Even if the pound goes up it will take a while before dealers adjust to that, so I would guess pretty much all 2009 will be expensive from the summer on.

You see the same from the Japanese guitar deals on eBay - prices are up about 25% v 6 months ago - an average condition Greco/Burny LP will set you back £300-350 plus shipping plus taxes = you are looking at at least £400 landed - a mint condition one will be over £500.

I agree with that Philly. I don't understand the model differences with Tokai. I know I should but I really don't.

:o  Look how much this SG-175 is going for!   I suspect he'll have trouble selling it though.

WahhhH!

Thats an unfeasably huge rise!

Stupid economy - I wouldnt notice this recession if it werent for our exulted Pie Minister dropping the arse out of the pound compared to every other  currency of any country I buy things from.

Crumbs, yeah...

My Love Rock is a black LS85 (I think )... I bought it new just about a year ago as a new home for my Mules. Asking price was £595, I knocked 'em down to £550.

£795 now... :(

^ same thing with edwards, i got my edwards LP copy just in time, when they were around the £500 mark. now they've doubled. o_O on the one hand I'm glad i got in in time, but on the other it means any more of them are off the menu for the forseeable future... :(
