Title: Dog appreciation!
Post by: Will on March 28, 2009, 11:45:14 AM
There needs to be some love of mans best friend around here.
I am meaning to get an Alsation soon to keep me company around the farm. (and to bite people)
Pics anyone?
I will try and get pics of all the dogs around at the moment:
1 Australian Kelpie
1 ^ half bred with collie
3 border collies (my Mother's one being an inside dog)
2 Alsations as guard dogs for stables. Fecking huge, and do not like males.

Nell - inside dog

What a noble beast.  Having a dog would make my life perfect but until my girlfriend and I own a place that's not going to happen.  One day though...

Gotta say, I'm a cat man myself.  Never really got on with dogs, far too loyal and trusting (the dogs, not me...).  Cats are mean, devious heartbreakers.  Much more my cup of tea...

He's a kooikerhondje - an old Dutch breed of hunting spaniel.

He'll be 9 this year and because of all the running around like in the first pic he's recently had to have ACL surgery.  No more fun in the woods for us for a long time if ever again.  That makes me a very sad panda. :( :( :(

Loz, right - Kelpie pup. Could lick you to death

Jade, not actually a farm dog but belongs to one of the workers. Another Collie.

There will be no pix of the killer alsations as I don't want to be near them.

ACL?
He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his back right leg.  He's walking on it pretty well now, but he's still not 100%.

I like your Collies Will. There great dogs. My ex has one. He's full of beans and really good natured, great fun taking him out with a ball launcher and watching other dogs trying to keep up with him!

The two above dogs look very happy!

I tried to get pix of the guarding alsations, but they are still in a wound up mood after a break in :(

Thinking of putting a deposit down on an Alsation pup though :)

Can't find a picture of my dog, even though I have about 11,000,000 photos of him on my computer.

OK, here is one, with wife and baby.

Funny, as I am usually a cat person, but I love that dog.

I sometimes say he is a "Kiev Household Dimwit" or "Ukrainian Street Dork."

Most normal people call the breed "American Pit Bull Terrier."

If you are looking for a guard dog, there are much better breeds for that.  Pitties can be trained to be guard dogs but they are not "naturals" at it like Dobies, Rotties, German Shepherds, Malinois, Filas, Boerbulls, Kavkazkas and others of that type.

A lot of the people who train pitties as fighters have to keep Dobermans or others to guard the pit bulls from being stolen. They are by nature quite trusting.

Of course, you also get morons like my moron neighbors, who think they have a ferocious guard dog but really have a classic (and unstable) fear biter.

No, if I move to a house will be also to a small city without much robbery, would be more like normal dog...

In deed, I'm thinking in one because people say they're calm, trusting... But I still have fear of the biters stories about new girlfriends, babies, etc. But yours looks quite happy with your baby (she is really cute too)

Thanks for the compliment.

A lot of pitties do not deal well with other dogs, for what its worth. (You probably know all this already but I am putting it out there for those who don't.)

So do not let a pittie interact with other dogs unsupervised, even if there have never been any incidents in the past. I also don't let my dog (Redhead) interact with my baby (Lilia) unsupervised, even though he has never been aggressive to anyone ever for any reason or provocation (including strangers touching his injured leg and a vet sticking her finger up his butt).

As far as avoiding the "crazy pitbull" stories we all read about: first, a dog's character is mostly his genetics. So I would either get an adult dog (so you know what his character is) or a pup from a solid responsible breeder.

Also, a tired dog is a good dog, and pitties are very physical, drivey critters. If you have a fenced-in area, a long hard round of fetch is a lifesaver.

Another thing you can do is make your dog work. For instance, Redhead has to follow some commands to get his breakfast, has to sit at the door when we go out for his walk, etc..

Read Ed Frawley's (Leerburg Kennels) articles on dog training, they are very good and down-to-earth.

I was planning to get a Doberman if I make the move to a house that I'm planning, but one breeder here said it wasn't a good idea, as I live alone and work like 10h a day...
Title: Re: Dog appreciation!
Post by: shobet on April 17, 2011, 12:39:42 AM
They're quite attached to their owners and crave company.  Both of us are lucky to work from home so they've always got us around. If you're away 10 hours a day then I think the breeder is being responsible by advising you against having a Doberman.
