Title: Pickups for Modern Alt/Rock Guitar and 7str
Post by: G9 on April 03, 2009, 05:11:31 AM
6-String
Guitar Specs:
Brazen Fantasy Deluxe (http://www.brazenguitars.com/fantasy_deluxe.html)
Neck- 5 piece maple/redwood
Fingerboard- Maple
Body- Swamp Ash
Bridge- TOM

Pickups:
Bridge: Good for straight modern rock rhythms... Seether, Audioslave, and such
Neck: Articulate, fluid soloing and excellent cleans
Middle: I'm wondering if I even need a middle... if I wanted a middle, it'd be the cleanest single coil available. I'd have a coil tap for the humbuckers, so I'm not sure if this is necessary.

7-String
Guitar Specs:
Ibanez S7320 (http://www.ibanez.com/ElectricGuitars/model-S7320)
Neck- 3pc maple
Fingerboard- Rosewood
Body- Mahogany
Bridge- ZR Tremolo

Pickups
Now from another thread it was decided that I'd be doing a Painkiller set for the bridge and neck. For the middle, I want as close to an acoustic as possible (bright yet warm). Given the unique nature of the ZR bridge, I don't think piezos are possible. Too bad that for 7's, BKP only offers humbuckers (then again... the 7 string market, limited in itself, is more of a heavy, high output kind of deal)... so either suggest a single coil 7 from another company or a humbucker from here. I will have coil tapping. Just based upon the description "renowned vintage sound, warm, rich and sweet with outstanding clarity and harmonic detail", Stormy Monday (http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZH-stormymonday.html) may just be the one I want. I looked it up and found that another UK pickups company, Swineshead, provides 7-string single coils: SH97 (http://www.swinesheadpickups.co.uk/sh97.shtml), Dragonfly7 (http://www.swinesheadpickups.co.uk/dragonfly7.shtml), and Spotlight7 (http://www.swinesheadpickups.co.uk/spotlight7.shtml).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Economy Plan
Will the Painkillers suffice for that kind of rock tone? After all, my 7 string really is just a 6 string with an extra string... If the tone is adequate for the style, why buy extra pickups and pay more for servicing?

And the for the 7-string itself... unless the "clean" humbuckers in question are a lot more different than the coil tapped versions of the Painkiller neck, bridge, and mixed, it might not be worth it.

It'd really be nice if I could consolidate it all in the 7. Obviously I'm playing in two acts... Metal (7 strings, Painkillers) and alt rock (6 strings, looking for the appropriate pickups).

I know it's a lot to ask, but can you give suggestions for each plan?

BKP does not offer 7-string single coil. The only 7-string pickups they offer, I believe... are humbuckers?

interesting... and painkillers will sound beasty :D but im not sure what kinda cleans you will be able to tweak outa them... probably fairly good, just depends how important they are too u i guess... n i reckon they could definately get that rock tone :)
