Title: Help create the Bare Knuckle Forum guitar!
Post by: discofudge on April 03, 2009, 11:18:13 PM
OK, so, I've had a kind of crazy idea. I am planning on buying the guitar pictured below. A Gibson Flying V Faded Worn Cherry Electric Guitar. I've always wanted a flying V, and I've found the right guitar for the right price.

So I have no actual need for a new guitar beyond that primal urge we all feel as I have a guitar for pretty much all occasions, however that's never stopped me before.

This got me thinking, I'm gonna change the pickups for BKP's, but in all honesty I have no idea which, and I have no obvious gaps in my guitar sound requirements. So this guitar would be a purely pleasure based purchase.

This leads me to the point of this topic. I would like everyone who reads this topic to post an opinion on what pickups they would choose, the aesthetic style they would plump for, and most importantly why they would make these choices. I intend to purchase this instrument at the end of April, and the most interesting and evocative choices, based purely on the reasoning given will be installed to this guitar.

I leave the discussion and case making to you, I truly have no preference, as I know that whatever happens, I will have a breathtaking weapon at the end.

Please have fun with this, and remember, this WILL be happening.

great guitar!
definitely worths more than it costs
I'd try a cold sweat set, maybe a painkiller
unless you want something vintage
in that case, I'd pick a riff raff set

I have the exact same guitar with black nickel covered Riff Raff (b) / Mississippi Queen (n).

It makes for a very versatile guitar :)

Well, I have one of these in black (OK, mine is a '67 reissue from 1992, but fundamentally the same guitar) with Miracle Man bridge & VHII neck.

So I would do the following:

Miracle Man bridge, black cover with cap head allen bolts
VHII neck, black cover with flat head allen bolts
Black tonepro bridge & tailpiece
Black Schaller straplocks
Black Grover tuners
500K pots, black metal dome knobs, push/pull tone pot for splitting the neck pickup.
Feline refret with Dunlop 6100 frets & new nut (trust me on this, you will not believe how well a Gibson can be made to play after Feline works his magic)
I suppose you could also swap the switch & jacks for black ones to complete the look, but I wouldn't bother...

Cold Sweats, chrome covers and black mounting rings.

I'm with Philly on this one ...  :)

The ( rest of the ) aesthetics of that guitar already look great .

Reasons ?

I might have thought Riff Raffs, but ( from what I read on here ) I feel that Cold Sweats have a bigger contrast between neck and bridge pickup - and are a pickup set that I would personally love to have tried next in my S.G. if  playing Rock.  I am romanced by the thought of a Miracle Man set ( enjoying Zakk Wylde / B.L.S as I do ) - but right there between the Riff Raff and Miracle man 'temptations' - are the Cold Sweat, a bridge pickup to Rock and 'squeeeel' on - with a more flexible and melodic neck.

As for changing bits aesthetically, like I have already said - it looks just great as it is, the Black pickup rings simply matching the control knobs and framing the ( plain ) chrome pickups nicely.

 :)

I hate to say it, but technically, the BKP forum guitar has already been done! (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9107.msg126569#msg126569)

Disappointed, I thought I was so original!

Never mind, I'm still looking forward to seeing what cool ideas people have.

Here's what I would do.

First the pickups. Nickel covered Riff Raffs.

The color: get some brown stain to give it a more walnut or heritage cherry color and a nitro clearcoat.

Pickguard: the current one is too white, I'd swap it for one that looks more aged/yellowed.

And I would add a Bigsby B5 with a Vibramate.

I actually have that guitar!

I have Rebel Yells in, got a black scratchplate on with a steel truss rod cover. With burned chrome covers. It wins SO hard.

Ok how about adding a Bigsby with if permission a bare knuckle guy engraved on a handle spoon at the end - along the handle "Bare Knuckles and Bigsby make this Baby Cry " - could change cry to an exclaimation that suits your style

Needs to be repaint in flecked gold with either all gold or all black fittings. If you want it pimped that is - not as sure about this as the Bigsby idea.

Pickups my vote goes to Riff Raffs

Aesthetically speaking, and being a fan of trans-cherry guitars, the white of the pick guard and truss-rod cover is jarring with me. Sadly taking the guard off and running with rings would leave holes and that'd be unacceptable. So, black guard for the pick guard and truss rod cover. Replace the knobs and switch tip with chrome to match the hardware, likewise pups I'd go with nickel covers.

As for the pups, depends what you want tone wise as to what you stick in there. My personal faves so far are the C-Pig/MQ-Pig set for CoC style, MM set for metal and CS set for rock/metal. Though all the sets are versitile to play other stuff, they all do work nicely in a chunk of mahogany.

On second thought................

If the pickaurd will be swapped anyway, why not get one for a set of soapbar P90's?

Gotta be covered (Chrome or Nickel) Riff Raffs for me :D

And I'd want to put black mounting rings on them - leave the rest as is for the moment...

So far it's either nickel riff-raffs or matt black cold sweats i think.

I'm getting proper excited about it.

Right, this is where we are...

Pickups are gonna be a bridge Riff Raff, neck a Mississippi Queen.

Nickel covers and black rings i think, or zebras.

Hi all, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I wanted to get some opinions.
I'm going to get a pair of Cold Sweat, but I'm wondering if I should go for double white.
I knocked this up quickly......

You did a cool job on that Ivan, do you think you could do one for me with one pic with zebra's, and one with nickel covers?

That's if you see this...

Or have the time...

Or the inclination....

Thanks!

Ok, bridge Riff Raff, and neck MQ are on their way. Nickel covers, and the whole thing is booked in for upgraded pots, fret dress and a new nut. Should be about two weeks, and it'll be ready to come to Germany with me for a festival.

I've heard rumor that they don't let you into the country without a flying v these days.  :D
