Albert McTaverty the eccentric multi millionaire is commsioning you to build him a money no object special he has told you ' I want the very best you can do, I want your soul in it, so I am not going to dictate anything - build it for me and for you'
What will be the shape, what will you fit it with, any special finish, remember he will pay for as much time and any materials you want so what will it be?

You obviously find my posts interesting as you read and replied to that in less than 10 mins obviously you have been in need of some new blood topics 8)
And I was gonna buy a feline guitar for my wifes birthday but if you gonna raz me I am not so sure may have to buy her a Legra instead :D
-
Not a luthier, so not answering the question, but it is interesting....
Given a completely free hand, would you build your own "dream guitar" - which wouldn't necessarily be an expensive one - or would you go all-out with the (tasteful) bling?

n00b blood topics, you mean.
I dont come here to not read threads or answer questions that I have some possibly usefull input to.
-
The question was meant to have some useful input I would expect most craftsmen to have thought about what they would make given a freehand and the outcome and reasoning behind it could be inspirational either to someone considering what they may want from a custom or to someone working on their first build. It may well result in commisions from people reading the forums and although that is not the major intent it could be welcome. I wasn't expecting just replies with the most expensive and exotic components and timbers anyone could look up the priciest guitar parts but where a luthier would spend the time and money and where not, when cost or the clients preferences are not a hinderence.
It was also intended to inject a bit of fun into the forum. Sorry if I upset peeps it is never intended.
Oh and as it's a noob question then it has obviously been asked before as that is what noobs do and I am happy to be pointed to the outcome?
-
Well if I was a luthier and as this is hypothetical, then I am, I'd make it out of a football, a motorbike and a large pair of jugs with beer squirting out of the nipples.

No, fair play, it's in interesting question. Let's see what Jonathan, Wez and Bob have to say if they see the thread.
-
No offence taken, its just ammusing that you've gone from non-player to ultra-enthusiastic high rate poster and threadstarter so quickly.
You could of course look at the guitars that the luthiers make as test projects, show guitars and their own instruments. It may not be the ultimate thing for them, but it'll give you an idea.
I doubt most have choose a single design anyway - few guitarists do.
Then there are guys like blackmachine, organic and mayones where the only guitar you can buy at all is basically some slight variation on what that luthier/the head luthier thinks is the ultimate guitar.
-
I suppose it is becuase I have been on many other forums for over 10 years and I sorta naturally drop into this process. I am a physicist by profession working in ultrasound but I started in computers when the Commodore PET and acorn atom and SC/MP were around so computers technology etc are second nature. I also enjoy crafting in wood although my carving skills would never be up to making a guitar!! I have had interests in sound engineering, speakers and amplification for over 30 years although my analogue electronics is very rusty.
Always helps to know a bit more about people I find!
Oh and I will run out of buzzing ideas for new threads very soon :)
-
Oooooo, physicist - get you!!
Pleasure to have another around ;)
I work in nuclear. My analogue electronics was rusty from the start

Nothing wrong with new blood - was being cheeky - as my subnote suggested
I did mean the welcome to the forum
Long standing members of this forum will know that we have often ribbed newcomers who come on strong with huge posting rates in a relatively short space of time
Think we may have been the same towards Sambo or Crazy Joe at one time or another
It's friendly banter although without tone of voice you can misinterpret
But as an scientific/analytical person, and hopefully a keen player it would be great to have more cool observations......

You didn't mention it today when you were in my workshop with your custom built Lion :P
-
the simple answer is that my crazy ideas tend to work better when they are guided by somebody elses
its a collaborative process, so i would need to know what Albert McTaverty wanted from a guitar and i would need to see if that fitted in with what i wanted to or could build
my main problem is that i will willingly try most ideas as i like most guitars. i personally dont do well at ultra pointy stuff. been asked a few times but had to turn it down because i havnt been happy with the designs. I always have ideas but i know i am not the best person for this style - they end up looking more 70's BC rich than what the person expects. i dont think thats bad!!
-
Could always make it historical wez and describe the guitar you've been most proud of although there is a risk you may upset customers who don't have that one
On a seperate note I do have a thick skin and really don't offend easily I am always more worried that I have upset someone else i love the motto 'do no harm'.
I am afraid I wont have a choice on the Feline guitar the name won her over we have had cats for over 20 years first a black moggie (Toddy) from our university days then 2 (Oltomaine Sirhenry Morgan (Henry), Oltomaine Longjohnsilver (LJ) up to 3 add Purdystone Maramaduke (Duke) and now down to 2 Maine coons (lost LJ just over a year ago to bowel cancer - still hurts :( ). I will post some pictures on the cats thread sometime soon. Have you ever done a sparkling shocking pink feline guitar ! hehe.
But I will be able to buy whatever I like for me !
NB. I don't think Gibson or PRS will be quaking in their corporate boots over the new Johnny Mac !!!
-
ah right... so you are really asking what i would build for myself if money was no object. thats a different question altogether
needs some thought and would change within 5 minutes
i am quite happy in that the guitar i am most proud of is usually the last one. For me its a continually development. Big improvements happen as my experience grows and i sometimes feel bad for the people who brought the one before the last one but when i speak to them they usually tell me i am being silly.
-
Wez you really need more imagination you need £25000 for labour - £23000 is for 2 months in Bali clearing your mind and thinking of the design the rest is for building the axe and beer !!!

i think i have plenty of imagination... probably not to the casual observer since they all look kinda like guitars. but i build guitars because i love them so i am not aiming to re-invent them completely.
Instead i have a list of many guitars i would like to build and many ideas and innovations i would like to try, most of which comes out in my responses here
In the last week or so i have typed repsonses about different types of pickup system (Piezo and optical rather than magnetic) , different materials for trems, the posssibilities for 8 string trems, the purpose of multiscale/fanned-fret guitars, new ideas for lapsteels etc, etc
there is also the projects running through my head i may or may not have mentioned including a headless multiscale re-imagining of the gibson corvus, a bowable fretless bass that can be played upright or normal, something using a fender wide range humbucker and blackguard 50 pickup - most likely in the style of a squier 51 with a different finish. A fretless bass like a re-styled EB0. A double neck bass/12 string. Another lapsteel in a completely different style. A thinline archtop with Ghost flame paint job. a relatively simple bass to try out a BKP P-bass pickup. a electric mandolin. A 7 or 8 string multiscale. etc, etc
some will get built, some will develop into new ideas, some will get forgotten about or pushed out the way by new ideas.

I'd find the oldiest mahogany tree on the planet and chop it down with a fine tooth comb.
Use the oldest turtle shell shaved off with a toothpick and a rusty baby tooth to make the inlays.
I'd use the crown jewels of the uk to make the gold frets.
and I'd use the removed bone from micheal jacksons surgery to make the nut.
then i'd piss on the thing and bleed on it a bit and mix that into the paint.
and charge £40 for it. after being arrested for being a complete tw@t and ruining a perfectly good thread with absolute $%ing shitee..

Well i didn't want my idea getting out up untill now. Mr Gibson bought the idea and they have been relic-ing the thing. The beer from the nipples is now warm and flat, just like my local. One jugs bigger than the other, with stretch marks and a few veins. The motor bike is now an old moped and the footballs got a puncture. :?
-
funny, i was speaking to a motorbike designer a few years ago in the pub and what he deicided he really wanted on a guitar was a fake boob that could be used as a wah controller... i think we pretty much got the whole system sorted within a few pints :)
