I saw Exodus live last night, and they were just BEYOND cool......my neck hurts like hell and i lost some of my voice! lol.......one thing that struck that hell out of me was Gary Holts Guitar tone, it was just incredible and clear, i think he uses SH-5's. Now that just made me wanna chage the bridge pup of my guitar i use for metal, its a VERY light mahogany guitar with a maple top and ebony fingerboard, a washburn boogie street instigator. I was wondering what pups would get me a similar incredibly clear yet crunchy thrash tone like that. Miracle Mans? painkillers?
thanks

Well, the only exodus I have is shovel headed kill machine. Good album. Painkillers.

I hope Antag doesn't see that, it'll set him off again!

hey im just saying what i read in another forum lol. i couldnt find anything on his guitars on google
-
Oor maybe cold sweat, actually.
-
http://www.seymourduncan.com/artists/featured_artists/38 ?? look i found this ..........yeah i was thinking possibly cold sweat but i imagined Painkiller and Miracle man were the thrashiest pickups
-
I say cold sweat cos theres an odd high end to exodus' rhythm sound that I recon, from my brief time with it, it matches quite well.
Maybe not compressed enough though. But then the only Bk that matches the compression I hear in that sound is the C-Pig. You certainly woundnt get a million miles from it with one, depends what the guitar sounds like. If its a bright guitar, the pig would work well, if its a more ballanced guitar, the PK, and the CS is the outside choice.
-
cold sweat + peavey for the last two albums tones
their live triple xxx tone is awesome
I think it's my second favorite recent crunchy tight picking metal tone (jon schaffer kicks more ass :D)
for tempo of the damned era tones, I'd say painkiller or miracle man + some marshall based amp
and the sh-5 is the best duncan model, imo (sorry, Antag )
-
thankss, i dont think its necessarily bright since its got a mahogany body and neck, its just the weight is low and its got a maple cap and ebony fingerboard, so its probably a little brighter than conventional mahogany guitars, lighter than my SG i think though its got a bigger body. The pickups it has are made for thrash (scott Ian pickup) but theres something about it thats missing.
-
On paper that sounds, broadly speaking, balanced. Would you agree?
I'm sure Darth Hellstyles recommendation is a good one in this but I cant wholeheartedly endorse it due to the very different setup of the guitar I heard the CS in compared to how I have or have had all my BKs (10s in E Vs various degrees of detuning and much heavier srings). Painkiller is the best I can say.
Unless anything more specific about the "something thats missing" you can offer changes my mind...

Pickups are of course important, but its all in the amp.

gwem's marshall preamp is on ebay for like a few dimes

never played that 9001 model, but my peavey rockmaster and the marshall jmp-1 definitely can get close with a booster to enhance the picking response (holt uses a parametric presonus EQ before the amp)

That reminded me - totally off-topic, but somebody's been trying to sell an A2 Holydiver neck pickup on eBay for ages (not that there's anything wrong with an 8k A2). He keeps relisting it but never gets any takers - probably over-ambitious with the starting price.

WAY over ambitious! i've never paid more than £60 for a second hand BKP
There was someone trying to sell a single coil set for more than a humbucker set usually goes for on ebay. I found that just baffling, as even new theres a 40 quid price difference between the hummies set and a singles set.
But yeah, after some reading into the SH-5 i do beleive a Cold Sweat is the way to go.

Nice! Glad to see some people on here who still love and appreciate the Kings of the Bay area!
My band toured with Exodus in 2006, it was an awesome time and I still count Gary and Lee as good friends. They even asked me to tech for them! Gary's live tone is killer, and (for the most part) could be had fairly easily. There are a few tricks and tidbits that will help you get closer, which I'd be more than happy to share with you guys here. Bear in mind that his rig may be different now, as this was almost 3 full years ago.
The most important element to Gary's guitar tone is in his guitar set-up. His fingerboards are scalloped fairly deeply, and he plays with a pretty light touch to match. Typically he has medium-low action, but with very little relief. This requires very precise fretwork, as a big part of his sound is the "crunchy" pseudo-buzz he gets from the frets but it's very easy to end up sounding buzzy and cr@ppy by going this route.
He uses a TS-9 mainly as a boost for solos, and a noise gate set pretty hard to give his sound that precise tightness for the rhythm chugging parts.
His EQ settings tend towards a scoop, but it's a far more mild scoop than they used to do. Mids usually hovered at around 3 but went higher sometimes, IIRC.
I can't remember what cabs he was using, though he used our cabinets sometimes and he sounded pretty much the same. We were using regular Marshall 1960B's, which have Celestion G12T-75's.
As far as pickups go, I remember him saying he tried a couple different models (and I faintly recall him saying he used a JB sometimes) and landed at the SH-5 though he had used EMG's in the past (Fabulous Disaster in particular). The Cold Sweat would probably land you in that general area (from what I've heard of them, I don't own any you see) and I reckon the Holy Diver would also be a good choice.
I hope that helped and didn't stray too far off-topic! :D

That was very interesting, and I'm not even an Exodus fan! :D

great post!
I'm not sure if he still uses the ts-9, but he posted on the official forum that he recorded with a presonus parametric EQW, and I found some live rig pics and he still got the EQ (that little blue one) on tour
he also said that he uses the Triple XXX fx loop extra gain stage as a booster (it's footswitchable)
what noise gate does he use? :D
and what string gauge?
I've seem some close pictures that look like a .060 on the lower E :?

Yeah, I vaguely remember the EQ pedal being there, though I can't be sure. Again this was 3 years ago. I do remember him taking a direct line out of a CS-2 into the PA for the clean intro for "No Love" and those are also blue so that might be what I'm thinking of.
About strings, I remember him and Lee (I installed a set of EMG's for Lee because their tech at the time wasn't really a big electronics guy) both used Dean Markley Blue Steel, and if I'm not mistaken they were 52-10, and they tuned to D.
..and, on the off-chance that Gary sees this and gets bummed: Gary, sorry for spilling the beans on your secrets!
To make up for it, a shameless plug:
EVERYONE who likes Exodus and plays guitar should pick up Gary's instructional DVD. This thing is an absolute must for Exodus fans, and anybody with an interest in Metal guitar! To quote another awesome guy/Bay Area crusher, "There's under-rated guitarists, and THEN there's Gary Holt." Craig Locicero - Forbidden/Spiralarms

it's actually this device:
