Title: Noise Suppressors - lets hear your experiences
Post by: hamfist on April 12, 2009, 05:32:44 PM
I had an ISP Decimator a long while ago, and remember it being excellent.

I may be looking at getting another noise suppressor pedal, but the ISP seems to cost a fortune these days. What's the NS-2 really like ?   Are there any other viable lower cost alternatives or is the ISP clearly way out in front ?

Shoot the drummer! That'll suppress noise. Seriously though, I don't seem to be plagued with this and the solutions offered up will be interesting.

My drummer has a T-shirt that says 'I'll play quieter if you play better' :(

:D

I've got a Decimator ProRackG, which is way more than the decimator pedal, but really, really nice!! Sorry that's not very helpful! I do like the ISP stuff, helps to tame amp a touch, especially the effects loop which is a bit on the noisy side.

Save up and get the Decimator :)

I would not go cheap on a noise gate, as it can change the transients of your guitar a lot, so better go ISP or do without (guitar volume in breaks).

I also have an ISP Decimator ProRack G with the stereo mod... very happy with it. I use it to silence two preamps from a single unit.
The guys from ISP are cool people to deal with. I bought a used unit on ebay a while back and it had a problem turning on... I mailed out the unit to the company and they called me upon receiving it and told me it was a loose power socket. Since it was already in their hands, I asked them to "upgrade" the unit and they did (for a reasonable fee). Once configured, it works like a charm - way better + quieter than the Rocktron Hush's.

front. it feels more natural there... doesn't 100% kill all the noise, but kills enough (for me, anyway).

Both, because it's a 2-channel rackmount unit! Guitar - pedal - channel1 - preamp - fx send - channel2 - fx return - power amp - speakers. Job done :)

I recently bought a boss BE-5 off a car boot sale (it was under £4.00 so I went for it) and the noise suppression on that seems adequate (though I would expect the ISP to do a significantly better job). The issue I have found is that the suppression is slightly 'laggy' to turn on and off and quiet notes came with lots of noise due to using the compressor section (not that much of an issue as I can easily turn it off with the side of my foot; the footswitches being too close together for my size 12 shoes.).

Well I found almost as many reviews saying that they loved the Boss NS-2 as much or more than the Decimator, as the opposite. And lets be frank here, NS-2's are seriously cheaper than the ISP pedal. So I just bought a used NS-2 off the 'bay. If it's cr@p I won't lose more than a couple of quid by selling it on.
In all honesty, I've been fiddling with my amps today, and I seem to have pretty much negated the need for a noise suppressor anyway. I'll have a play with the NS-2 when it gets here anyway !

THanks to all for their input !

what specifically are people here using noise suppresors for?  I've never found the need for one except when playing with LOTS of gain where you want to kill the note dead for those low-E chugging parts (Pantera/Metallica etc...)

I just bought it and it had one, that's my excuse.

I also pretty much solved the problem by turning down the compression effect.

This is exactly what I use my NS-2 for. I do find it rather rules out anything involving rolling off the volume on the guitar, but for what I'm mostly playing, I've deemed that a sacrifice worth making given the advantages it offers for the aforementioned chuggety bits.

Got the NS-2 yesterday.

Well, it seems pretty good. The noise reduction seems (from memory) to be pretty much as good as the ISP I used to have.
The negative point is that there is a noticeable volume drop when the NR is engaged, whcih the Decimator didn't have. So it'll be OK as an "always on" effect but no good if I want to keep switching it on and off.
However, I think I'll give it a go as an always on effect with my Tube zone (which is a fairly noisy pedal) in it's loop, with the NR set at a low level. Seems like it might have a use for me after all !

That's strange, I borrowed an NS-2 from a friend last week to check it out in my rig and it gave a volume boost when turned on. :? I did find that it worked quite nicely :) the release time is just right imo. (when you turn it to 9 o clock)

Maybe it's because I used it in front of the amp, and after (using the second loop)..

I use alot of gain and play with 5 pedals and the ISP will completely kill all nose, but It also kills alot of sustain . Especially when doing volume swells.   I have to compromise and lower it a bit and deal with some hiss.
i am looking into an mxr smartgate to see if i can do better.

I've been using the NS-2 for a few weeks now, just using my noisiest, highest gain pedal in it's loop, and have been very pleased with it.
For all my lower gain and more delicate playing, my signal doesn't go anywhere near the NS-2, so I guess a lot of the outcome of how successful a noise suppressor will be is in how you implement it, and what your expectations are.
I've certainly found the NS-2 to be no worse than the ISP Decimator I use to own.
