Title: Guitar suggestions needed
Post by: Simon D on April 13, 2009, 09:46:05 PM
Hi all,

Having just sold 2 guitars (my Epi LP and PRS SE Singlecut), I'm now looking for something new. So far, the Fender Jim Root Tele is on the list, but I'm curious as to whether there's something I've not thought of. I'd welcome any suggestions or ideas people have. I've got a pretty good idea of the spec I'm after, but the budget isn't huge and is tight (please don't say 'Go custom' - you'll bankrupt me!). I'll be playing mostly metal and very heavy rock on this guitar. I'm open to looking at body shapes that aren't the 'usual suspects', but I'm not looking for a V or anything BC Rich-like.

The spec I'm after:
 - Body: mahogany
 - Neck: Maple or mahogany, slim but not Ibanez skinny, think C-shaped - Modern Fender C to PRS wide thin, unbound
 - Fretboard: Rosewood or ebony, radius 9 to 12, fairly big frets
 - Pickups - 2 humbuckers, reasonably high output
 - Bridge - Fixed for easy tuning changes
 - Neck joint - Set or bolt on, I'm not fussy.
 - The budget is £850 at max. I'm ok with the idea of buying secondhand, so I guess that may provide a few more options.

Hit me with any and all ideas guys.
Cheers,
Si

if you're willing to go second-hand, i'd seriously consider a patrick eggle of some kind from the 1990s. if you don't need fancy tops etc. you could probably cut that budget in half, too.

Simon's already got a Warmoth build, so I'd guess it's crossed his mind!

I was thinking something SG-ish too.  But that Jim Root Tele does seem to tick all the boxes!

Until Warmoth start doing set neck/body combos I'm firmly on strike!

Cheers for the replies so far guys - couple of things I hadn't thought of there, SGs being one (god knows why i didn't think if them before). I've no experience with them at all, so I'll have to give one a go. Something to do on my lunchbreak tomorrow maybe...

Eggles are another I hadn't considered, possibly because a mate just picked up a very nice Berlin with a flametop, so that's what I associate them with in my head now (Don't really want any spangle at all on this guitar - I've got a couple of guitars with maple tops or veneers, this is to be plain I think.). If the price on Warmoth stuff hadn't gone through the roof, I'd consider doing that, but it's out for now sadly.

seriously for a second, and its not often i do this, but if you are willing to have an oil finish rather than lacquer you are not far of my prices for simpler guitars

so feel free to browse my photobucket which has everything including kittens, cats, forum members and tattoos.

Cool I think you should change your forum link to that - just I keep forgetting and clicking on your tag

And for the suggestion if you can get a custom for nearly the same money is that not gonna get you exactly what you want ?

its not always that simple though, my prices do start quite low but when people start speccing up a custom guitar its hard not to add a few extra options that start pushing up the price.

and custom just isnt for everyone anyway

The Jim Root Tele is the one I would go for.

Nice wolf in sheeps clothing, good features and since it's a tele, it will be nicely balanced and nearly indestructable.

I'd be looking at a Viper for that. Better balance than an SG, better looking than a tele (don't want to be heckled for looking like a c*** now do you), and ticks all the boxes.

Actually that's not the first thing I'd be doing. The very first thing I'd be doing is getting on the blower to Wez and thrashing out a few ideas with a budget in mind. :)

Go Go Go!

I thought Explorer, to be honest, but don't know on the neck radius.

But if I had to choose between SG, Tele or Viper. I'd go for a Viper. A 1000 model.

you can get them without the fancy tops, so no worries there. :) you might have to wait a while if you have a specific model/colour/finish you're after, but that's the same with anything second-hand. :)

Cheers for the suggestions guys. I played a Gibbo SG at lunchtime today, and didn't really get on with it. Nothing i can really put my finger on, but I just didn't vibe with it. I also have a feeling i'd end up replacing the pickups with Nailbombs or something simliar.

As far as the custom idea goes, it's something I'm definitely open to in the future, but when I 've got enough money to really do it properly - if I did it on this budget I'd end up skimping on something and it'd annoy me! However, the pic of that Wez V guitar above made me think of the Fernandes Ravelle, so after a look on their website, that's on the list to look at.

What about a guitar with a split personality top half les paul bottom SG - the Les G or maybe other way round the S paul. Could even combine top and bottom from say a strat and an SG the stratoG (hehe I like stratoG) or a Teles paul, The Lescaster The Ibastrat or Go mad The Paul Reed Les McCarty Stratanez Explorer.

Have you looked at a Schecter Hellraiser or a Schecter C-1 Classic? It pretty much fits your specs. The only thing is the neck is a little smaller than a C neck on a fender.

I'd go for a WezV than a Fernandes Ravelle anyday.

the first one i did was for my cousin because he liked the ravelle shape but wouldnt play anything with fernandes on the headstock.  after that i changed the shape to  my vendetta design, showing a bit more influence like an organic iceman without the penis extension
