Title: Addicted to the sound of an electric guitar?
Post by: Twinfan on April 15, 2009, 01:12:15 PM
Something I realised today is that I think I'm addicted to the sound of an electric guitar.  By way of an example, here's a Twinfan day:

* Get out of bed, Planet Rock on the DAB radio in the bathroom
* Get in car, Rock Radio on the car stereo or a rock/blues based CD
* Get to work, listen to MP3 player of rock/blues music or a rock/blues based CD
* Get in car, Rock Radio on the car stereo or a rock/blues based CD
* Quick change, fire up an amp in the living room and grab an electric guitar
* Break to cook some food, Planet Rock on the DAB radio in the kitchen
* A bit more guitar playing before bed

It's not always that extreme, but you get the picture.  I just love the sound of a cooking valve amp and an electric guitar.  I get withdrawal symptoms if I go without for too long.

I'm guessing there's no cure........?

You're not the only one - if I'm not sat on the PC listening to music (got the new Mastodon on now and its got some lovely tones on it), I'm playing. If I'm not playing, I'll be at work listening to many awesome (or not so awesome) bands play as I work the bar.

Life is good :D

I'm not alone - woohoo!

It's also the source of my obsession with guitars.  I love the different sounds each one makes, and what it is about them that makes them sound different  :D

i love the sound of the guitar bite too  8)

its funny though that many non-guitarists would have trouble telling the difference between the sound of a '59 Les Paul and a 2009 Tesco's Strat :(

Pretty much.

Aside from my guitar-soaked lifestyle, one of the biggest giveways is >1000 albums of almost nothing but guitar music, dominated by electric guitar.

Pretty much the same here. I also hate going on holidays, as I am usually without guitar/amp. Whenever there's a bigger city to visit I'll have prepared a sheet with adresses and guitar shops along with notes which brands they carry.

You also forgot to mention those quiet moments in "the little room" where you read guitar mags.

does anyone on here play guitar every day? my guitar playing seems to go up and down a lot

one way to stop playing guitar is to use a cloth to mute open strings and try hammering on sweeping patterns with only your left hand while keeping the volume consistent, my fingers took 3 days to recover!!!

I am pretty much the same though I am addicted to music not just electric guitar. I play most days-sometimes mindless noodling but often with some aim in mind.Currently I am really pleased with my playing having spent some time recently with a good friend who is a stunningly good guitarist and he taught me more in an hour than I have learned in years. Sadly I am about to ngo on holiday for 2 weeks and I am dreading being without my guitar but I intend to do that practice in the head thing that will hopefully obviate the lack of guitar-unless I can trace som guitar players wherever I happen to be and get some playing in.

Nope. Not addicted in the slightest.

And how many of us have iTunes playlists called things like "Fave Guitar Tones", "Irresponsible Guitar", "All Plexi, All the Time" and so on and so on?

I should also introduce the idea and rules for "Rock Friday".  A group of us instituted "Rock Friday" at a company I used to work at and we've exported it world-wide.  There are only two rules:

1) No ballads.
2) "Rock Friday" must climax with Van Halen's "Jump" at beer-o'clock ready for the pub.

I don't know about addicted... but I do love the sound of an electric guitar.  There's not much music I listen to that isn't guitar based, one way or another.  But I also love the sound of a voice, especially in simple arrangements that aren't swamped by elaborate production or studio trickery.

I guess what I really love is music that sounds like it's made by humans, not machines - the little mistakes, accidental sounds and slight mis-timings.  And the guitar is wonderful for that, there are so many ways to change the tone with just the way you pick, or how hard you squeeze the strings.  It's almost impossible to play anything exactly the same way twice.

I'm not so crazy about the sounds I make myself.  I do pick up a guitar nearly every day, but maybe only for a few minutes at a time - and usually it's unplugged.

I love the electric guitar.

I love all sorts of styles of music too (some of them barely involving the guitar).

HOWEVER, I also very much like silence too. If I'm not playing then, most often, I'm enjoying the quiet.

I actually listen to very little music these days.

Perhaps it's something to do with my house being rather noisy (daughter alert !!), that I appreciate the absence of noise so much !

No day passes without me hearing an electric guitar.

For me it's music in general - and I go through phases of particular types of music. Guitars obviously figure BIG time for me, but also nice "classic sounding" keyboard (mainly piano and organ) sounds. Think bashed up Fender Rhodes or Hammond organ sounds :D (I am not a fan of the "DX7 chorused piano" sound that was so prevalent in the 80s, although, if you play one on its own, it is rather a sweet sound and you can see why every keyboard player used it )

However, when averaged out over time, I think the human voice actually takes first place over guitars for me.

I've blown out girlfriends so i can play my guitars more. They always try and get between me and what i love so they have to be sacked. I am addicted to playing guitars and I'm happy to stay this way. As for girlfriends I think I'll just stick to whores, less hassle and crying.  :D

I think I'm just addicted to music. Cant go a day without listening to something. I can go days or weeks without playing a guitar though, and when I do play its never for more than an hour at a time. I just get bored of playing the same stuff all the time :\

You have to get out of your comfort zone and into new playing ideas. Its hard though as I'm the same. I may buy some different lick library DVDs to try and do it, i find it easier than books.

Yes thats true! Still I haven't been able to shag even if I had a bird on the go as my back was too painful. I dumped my bird Julie just after the new year cos I wasn't getting enough time on my Feline Lion. It was doing my nut in. I was at her house miles from me in Kent each weekend and I had a 2.5 grand custom guitar that was getting around 30 minutes of playing time each evening. She used to eat into my practise time with her 2 hour phone calls each night. It had to end. I've only just bonded with my Feline custom in recent weeks and I've had it since October! I love it now. The ex thought it was a phaze that I would grow bored of! Silly bloody cow, they haven't got a clue have they. The alternative was a whole lifetimes worth of baggage, a physco ex husband who stalked us, 3 grown up kids who hate each other, all her mates baggage, jade goody worship, Take that, Luther Vandross, The spice Girls,  endless cr@p tv, soap omnibuses, X $%&#ter, Britains Got (chavvy) Talent and all the rest of the bloody awful shite that passes for entertainment and at the end of the televisual feast a shag, which you can get anywhere and a lot better.
Rant Over.
