Hi all,
As a gigging musician, I have had to deal with turning up to venues and then having to go through "Why did nobody tell me about this" syndrome. You know the one, where it's all hunky dory over the phone / internet and then when you get there it's "You could have told me over the phone you have no P.A system...."
It got me thinking, and I think I have come up with a solution.

I was going to just use this for my local area, but hell, the UK needs this. There is a better explanation on the site, so I'll let the internet do the talking, but after this has picked up I will be applying for a grant from the arts council to have the site made much better. I have biiiig plans for this, but I need some directory contributers so I can present it to the Arts Council to make it better.
Please join the forum and let me know what you think!

Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't gig so I can't contribute, but good luck with it!
-
I'll be joining up as soon as poss (gotta hit the sack tonight, early start tomorrow to hire a van then get the band down to London for our Charity gig at the Barfly - please come along to support if you're close by!).
Definitely a good idea. I'll see you on those forums soon. :)

i like this idea

Cheers guys! Look forward to seeing you n the forum!
-
It does seem like a good idea though whether my band( a bunch of old farts) will be of use to you thrusting young things I am not sure.
-
Hmm, great minds think alike. I've been brainstorming on a sort of similar idea to fix the same problems for about two weeks now after being sick of the problems I keep hearing about it, lol! Though that was only one aspect of it...
I also saw it as a personal way to gain more web development experience before I go to college/uni, though I think I'm more of a designer than a coder and thank god you can now specialize in either instead of having to do both.
This is rather spooky because back when i was a music photographer, i was about to suggest a wiki for a music venue database and band managers database, which would make it easier to contact the right people to get a photo pass, and when I checked the forum (grassroots exchange) someone had just started one! Either satalites are picking up my ideas and giving them to other people or satalites are giving me other peoples ideas.
Hmm. *dons tin foil hat*

Hah! Collective conciousness mate! I swear it exists. :D
And 38th, this is for all bands! It's not limited to genre, sex or age. Get in there mate!
Just PM me the relevant details as outlined on the Directory page and it shall be done. :)
-
*Bump* Come on guys, had a couple new members but nobody has sent me their directory details yet. And 38thBeatle, I'm looking at you! This site is for musicians and bands of all ages, want a broad spectrum of users from beginner giggers to seasoned veterans. In fact, seasoned veterans I would appreciate more, as their help and advice can be extremely valuable to other gigging bands.

Come one and all!

I'm liking this idea, i could ask around a few of my local venues if you like.
-
Aye that would be awesome, thanks. It's free to list, obviously, all they need do is send me the info asked for on the Venue listing page.
Cheers!
:)

Sorry old chap-I have been run ragged over the last few days and am about to leave for a holiday for a couple of weeks. If I get a moment before I go( tomorrow morning at around 4.30) I will try and pass the details on to the band's manager but I am busy packing -just took a breather to check out the site.
-
Roger that, Nadz! Had the gig to worry about, but that's done and dusted now, you should have a PM with directory list details :)

That's cool 38th, just wanted to reassure you after that post earlier is all, want to let everyone know the site is open to all and welcomes all directory listings. :D
Cool Roo, just saw it and PM'd you back, heh.
Sorry, I don't mean to rush people, for some reason now that I have no job I kinda forget other people actually have lives, lol! I've been sitting in front of the computer all day at a loss for something to do, have exhausted all the job search sites so apart from that I've been watching my new site whilst twiddling my thumbs, haha!
-
Good Idea and good luck but when I sa this for some reason www.gignet.co.uk came into my head I thought what a good name for a place to advertise gigs. It doesn't exist so quick guys someone go register!
Saw that gigs exist but that's big stuffs is there a local gigs site?
-
Not yet as far as I know, but could be something I could integrate into the site. I am sure there are quite a few newspaper sites that have a "what's on" but not everybody goes to those kinds of sites. I'll look at hw much admin that kind of thing will take, it might warrant a completely new site, but linked to the existing one....sounds like a lot of work too, hehe. But if I can make it user editable, then that would work. e.g a venue signs up and are given admin rights for the listing part of the site or something.
Well worth thinking about! :D

For local stuff we in Leeds have Leeds Music Scene, and of course there's the various magazines such as Sandman and Vibrations and what not.
-
We almost have the same kind of thing, and the free publications, but hardly anyone takes notice of them. Plus most of the time you don't get the whole advice / opinions and general camaraderie I hope to get going with the site. Sounds like the scene is more connected where you are though.

Get the name Gignet registered even if you won't use it yet. May get sponsership for some of the costs I would suggest it had a limit of gig venues up to say 500 seatish ?
Could set to search by genre or location have a ratings or feedback section. Could potentially generate income from it to cover runnung costs - voluntary probably.
If everyone started adding it to their myspace etc and say on posters for their gigs - find our next gig at gignet.co.uk etc?
