Title: Robert Rodriguez resurrecting Predator franchise
Post by: Ian Price on April 27, 2009, 10:44:09 PM
Just read about this on sky text. Not sure how it will work out. If he uses some of his Sin City crew (Jessica Alba running around a forest please hint hint hint) it might be okay!

I don't know why but after watching Awake, I really hate Jessica Alba.

Maybe cause she acted so well in being a bitch in the film I observe the same of as a person.

But nevertheless, Predator = Cool.

Agreed.

Predator 2 = Not cool.

AvP = not very cool

AvP2 = not cool at all

Robert Rodriguez = cool, but a bit too aware of how cool he is (like his buddy QT).  Needs to calm down a bit.

i respectfully disagree, Predator 2 is a fine movie.  i'd love to know who had the balls to replace Arnie with Danny Glover!  completely different from the first one, and in these days of sequels which are thinly disguised remakes, that in itself is to be applauded.

i hope Rodriquez does something good with this.  i find his stuff can be very good, a lot of fun, but he often gets half way through a film then seems to lose all interest in plot or characters and just blow everything up in the silliest way possible!  although, that might work ok with predator...

Tarantino for a new Alien movie?  ;)

Awesome, should be a laugh.

Especially if he gets bored and starts blowing things up.

what, you don't want a wise cracking, self aware alien doing a knowing pastiche ( or rip-off ) of obscure creature features from the sixties and seventies?

Not forgetting:

- A funky, badass, mutha-fockin' blaxploitation soundtrack?
- Cameo appearances by QT himself and several deservedly forgotten bit-part actors like Michael Parks?
- Random scenes in black and white or different aspect ratios?
- Several different title sequences, just because they're, like, rilly rilly COOL?
- Momentum-destroying drawn-out monologues and neverending dialogue scenes (to demonstrate Quentin's rapier-like wit and rhythmic use of the spoken word)?

No.  I don't want any of those things.

Maybe QT should stick to being a guest "mentor" on American Idol (and how the hell did he blag that?)

:o I hadn't heard of this. Outrageous! What tips does he offer?

He was only on it for one week.  If I remember right he just told them all to "rough it up" and use their hands more dramatically.  No-one took any notice of him - and rightly so.

i didn't see Grindhouse (and won't do it until they release a complete theatrical version DVD), but i love Tarantino's previous movies... i love the way he casts and directs actors too. as it often happens when someone has got some nice ideas, the worlds began to think that the only way to make movies is copying tarantino, but it's not his fault... it's worse when he copies himself, like it seems he did in death proof. but not having seen it i can't judge.

i think Tarantino is brilliant at what he does, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill are all fabulous movies.  he could be accused of a lack of versatility, or you could say he has his own distinctive style.  how many directors can you say that about?

ok, there's Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, David Fincher, David Lynch and, of course, Ed Wood.  but most times the director could be anyone, with a Tarantino film, love it or loath it, you always know it's him.

Death proof was a bit cr@p though

I don't disagree about Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown, but I thought the rot set in with Kill Bill, especially the second half.  Boring, self-indulgent tripe, I absolutely hated it.

Just because you have lots of ideas, it doesn't mean they're all equally good or that you have to use them all, like some hyperactive little kid on a sugar rush - I think QT needs a tough editor who's prepared to stand up to him.

fair point, i suppose you could say reservoir dogs is his lean mean punk album and kill bill is his sprawling prog concept album! :)  condensed into one 2 hour movie, it probably would have been better.

it's a pity he hasn't done more films, and advanced his art rather than wallowing in nostalgia for the movies of his own youth, but at least he has made a handful of fantastic films.  and there's always the hope that he'll do more.

Agreed. Kill Bill is total cr@p. It's just all a bunch of GCSE Drama ideas mismatched and shoved into a 2 hour film slot.

There's nothing arty about it. Its just infantile cr@p.

And the people that like it are almost as bad... "He's so creative! There's nothing like it! What are you talking about, the plot was brilliant!

A perfect example of "Just because you can do something. Doesn't mean you should."

I really liked Kill Bill (although Dhiem, if you want to see Grindhouse, just watch it. I've been waiting for the original directors cut for Kill Bill for years).
