Title: CD review -- HEAVEN AND HELL, The Devil You Know
Post by: Denim n Leather on April 28, 2009, 07:31:26 PM
Nothing to say, really.

Just buy it!

Production is noteworthy in that it's not compressed to death and you can turn it up without your ears bleeding. Iommi solos every chance he gets.

It's terrific!

It's just epic, i'm listening to it for the first time right now, about half way through and i love it. This is how metal should sound.

i've had it on in the car the last two days.  hard to believe this is a bunch of men aged about 60!  the production is great, as Ben says, and the guitars are massive!  i already really like a lot of it, and i think it's gonna grow into a favourite.

Why is it that whenever I pre-order something, I don't actually receive it until everyone else in the world has already had it for weeks?   :(

I hate pre-orders too... decided to stop buying them (but you know, I may be not able to hold my finger )

Agreed.

Too bad that this is considered hard rock, at least as far as the "music biz" is concerned -- No double bass, not compressed and brightened until your ears bleed, no growling, nothing tuned down to Z Flat.

dio looks more like gollum these days :P
but man, he can still sing!

I just finished it! I thought I was going to have disagree at the start of the album - I quite dislike 'Atom And Evil', and I find 'Fear' a bit medicore (for the musicians involved)... but my days it soon warms up!!

Great bass playing from geezer, and Dio can indeed really still sing! I found some of Iommi's riffing slightly overly complex at times (in the same way Tatler has become), but his solo's were all top notch. Very thick tone! Drumming is energtic, some unusual patterns too, though the rhythms don't dominate.

I give it 8 or 9 out of ten... better than 'Mob Rules'

now that would be an ending to a farewell show;  destroy the painting on stage and watch the singer crumble to dust!  :)

Meh, the tracks I've listened to on the MySpace seem a bit same old same old.
These people really don't want music to move on since the 1980s...

Nice production though (from what I can tell - myspace isn't great for critical listening  )

I must say I like my metal the old fashioned way... heavy

Listening to the Myspace tracks now.

Sounds pretty good. Haven't bought a metal album for some time now but this is worth checking out.

If you're old enough for a free bus pass, you've probably missed your window of opportunity for suddenly becoming a modernist.

It's awesome.

Everything on this album is big - big guitars, big drums, big voice.

This is what "heavy" means to me.

I agree, and that's mostly due to the fact that every instrument has room to breathe, instead of figuring out how to get 16dB of overs to press without CD players rejecting it! (Death Magnetic, I'm looking at you!!)

^^^^^^ - very ture, decent-ish album ruined by loudness issues = Death Magnetic!

I caught the advert for the new Heaven+Hell offering and thought 'woah, that sounds much better than I expected' - I may have to invest in a copy - I wish I had been to see them on tour now, but they only played the COncert Hall in Nottingham, which is NOT a good venue to see a 'heavy' band in................Motorhead are playing there as well, argh, why!!!??? :x

after getting it, i went back and listened to Heaven & Hell and Mob Rules, i don't have Dehumanizer.  i think the band sound at least as good now as they did then!  the only thing i'm not keen on is the long wide vibrato Dio has developed.  otherwise, it's great stuff.  i'll have to get Dehumanizer now too

I recommend it - Dehumanizer is a brilliant album, was one of my faves before my car decided to eat it (car at the time was a Kylie fan, I think...)
