friend had a wacko ex girlfriend steal guitar during his show/od on pills while writing crazy messages on his MArtin Acoustic in a black Sharpie marker!!!stuff like "I cant live without you!",etc...she is going to make it,and YES..she needs help!!!...but so does the Martin!!anyone know how to remove permanent marker from a glossy spruce top?????

I would imagine any solvent that would remove the marker would take the laquer with it so I would expect the only hope would be very fine abrasives and repolish? it rather depends I think on how thick the clear coat is, personally I would take it to an expert get an estimate for both a clean up and/or a refinish if the worst should happen.
I wonder if all risks house insurance would cover this - there is one for Hiscox (if you have seen the commercial this will make sense)

Probably needs something with a little abrasive in it but not too much!
Maybe something like a car polish or scratch remover.

Try a bit of lighter fluid.

See if you can get hold of some 'Orange Solvent'. It's a dental solvent that is safe for use in the mouth, and is a fairly low potency solvent. Used with a soft cloth (or even a kitchen towel) you may have a good chance of gettingthe permanent marker off without damaging the laquer.

Car cutting fluid or an abrasive polish would probably work but I wouldn't be brave enough to try it

In the first instance I would be tempted to try isopropyl alcohol wipes (Sterets or any other similar brand of medical swab should do fine). In a brief experiment after reading this thread, I used a black Sharpie marker to make a small mark on my acoustic. After half an hour to dry, long after it was smudge-proof to the touch, a Steret took it straight off. Then a quick rub with a dry cloth to take the alcohol itself off, and there is no sign that a pen ever touched the guitar.
I also dug out an old skateboard deck with some Sharpied writing on it that I had in the cupboard, which had been there several months - the alcowipe again removed the black ink without any visible damage to the underlying surface. The only issue would be whether the ink has reacted with the finish during the time it's been on the guitar already, which may be possible with a nitro finish if that's what it has.

thanks guys..very helpful....a local cat has also suggested 3M rubbing compound, made here in the states by 3m chemicals-he is a repair/luthier and swears by it....my buddy, meanwhile, is fending off the crazy girl's family, who blames HIM for her lifetime of dysfunctional "charm"...these all sound promising!!!and wea rent too worried about totally screwing the guitar up...its in a smokey bar 4 nights a week 8)..thanks!!!

the 3m rubbing compound will be next

a good thick coat of laquer will make sure it stays for ever

from my experience alcohol (95% spirit) will remove most markers, and unless the guitar is french-polished, it shouldn't affect the (probably synthetic) lacqer.
If you want to make sure you don't damage the finish you can try rubbing a spirit-soaked cloth on a small area beneath one of the tuners (after you remove the tuner...). that way even if you do ruin the finish you can just put back the tuner and act as if it never happened.

Lynx Deodorant... works a treat spray it on leave a few seconds and it should wipe straight off. :shock:
