Sorta embarrassing because it's a super easy riff... it's just that it's quite fast and I can't figure out the picking.
Which notes are up strokes and which are down?
E|-----4---0-------3---0-------4--|-----------4-------3---0-------0--|
B|-2-----------2-----------2------|--------2------2------------2------|
G|---------------------------------|------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------|------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------|------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------|------------------------------------|
I'm playing it;
U D D U D D U D U D U D D U D
My hand hurts,
Fugazi, by the way.

I'm doing all downstrokes on the Bs and ups on the Es I think.
-
I would do the same as you or use little finger for the open e string
-
i'd probably use alternate picking or maybe economy. I don't know the song, though, and if i actually tried playing it i might do something completely different. But just from looking at it, yeah, either alternate or economy.

Yeah I think that that's the way forwards. This is such a choon!

and for the rest of us, what does this mean? lol

What other picking techniques are there - You'd hardly use a chicken pickin' style?
-
I'd play it strictly down up down up, seems to work when i try and play that.
-
Strictly down up down up alternate picking.
It's a good exercise because the pattern often leaves you the wrong side of the string and learning to overcome that is the key to picking fast
-
Alternate picking is consistently up then down up then down.
Economy is just playing whatever is easiest, a combination of down and up depending on what string you're hitting.
I wish I worked on alternate picking more, it's meant to be very easy to do after a lot of practice. Plus it makes your original question totally redundant, as the answer would be up then down then up then down....

i guess you could use hybrid. EDIT: is hybrid chicken pickin'?
economy and alternate are what badgermark said, saves me from having to bother with an explanation, thanks. :)
