Title: Amp Advice
Post by: bamboofrog on May 04, 2009, 10:12:45 AM
Hi All

I am currently using a roland microcube which I love for what it is, a little portable practice amp. I am after something a bit better which can still be used at home. I mainly play quite clean (green, gilmour) upto ac/dc distortion but rarely beyond that.

I had a EVJ but never really got on with it, very bassy and dark. I have been think about the Killer Ant but not sure if it will have the clarity I want.

Budget wise, at the moment not much over £300 but I am willing to wait and save for the right amp.

All help is as ever appreciated

I think the Orange Tiny Terror combo or the Blackstar HT-5 combo would be up your street?

+1 for the Blackstar HT5

Although I managed to pick up a Laney Lionheart LT5 for £350 secondhand which is a superb little amp if you like vintage sounding valve amps.

Cheers I had feeling that the TT and blackstar might be offered as the way forward. I haven't heard the Blackstar but I will have a look around.

The Tiny Terror is a great little valve amp, nice raw AC/DC soundt... for a nice lower volume clean sound it's nice but it has it's limitations being a single channel amp. I use mine in 2 ways... at home just straight in with the gain on about 2 o'clock, and at rehearsal with the volume cranked, the gain up just enough to get a cleaner sound to the desired volume to play with the band. Then I use my effects into the front... mainly an M.I audio crunchbox for gain and CAE Line driver/ MXR Micro amp for lead boost. Be warned though... it's addictive and you keep edging the volume up and they are quite loud!

If you play mainly clean sound, and if you have a dist pedal left for some AC / DC and more saturated stuff, then I think a fender Pro junior (or a second hand Fender Blues Junior, which is even better) could be an option for your budget.

The sound quality is amazing and the clean / crunch is just stunning !

I swear by my Tiny Terror. I actually got the upgrade in it recently and it sounds really good. Still figuring it out

Thanks all will try out the tiny terror at my local music shop. The blackstar sounds nice but very modern sounding, looking for a more warm vintage sound.
