Title: A change is gonna come!
Post by: bewithdennis on May 05, 2009, 11:55:06 AM
Ok friends
help me out if you will,i have had my PG blues fitted for a while now and as much as love "that" sound, they just dont seem to have the grunt i want from my LP type guitar especially in the neck position which when selected the volume drop is quite considerable and very thin sounding(stratty?),now dont get me wrong, they are great pick ups, they really are, advise me though,im looking more for the great tones of mr Billy F gibbons when using his famed pearly gates les paul, would i be looking at VH11`s?
im going to buy a calibrated set whichever i choose..
over to you guys
cheers
Jason

I would be having a listen to some Nailbomb clips! also HD bridge pup would be close, although I don't think the neck would give you the sound your after.

My guess would be Mules, but I've read elsewhere that it's Stormy Mondays you want for BFG tones (and I understand these are very similar to the PG Blues)???

I actually get very nice BFG out of MQs in an Explorer... so go figure

My vote would be Mules - I don't think you need to go hi-powered.

it just seems to be the neck position it feels let down, but i want to replace as a pair.

wtf? high gain pickups for 'pearly gates' tone... surely not!

thats always a wise choice :)

i have no idea if it will nail you BFG's tone, since hes always playing round with weird amps and effects. but mules are great pickups, and will serve you well for just about any style.

tim has a trick to stop unpotted pickups feeding back. but if you would play brutal high-gain/high volume styles i would still personally take potted for the security.

unpotted it meant to be a lively/more open sound. it could be ideal for blues or even a bit of hard rock i guess, alot of people like it!

mule neck is very different from pearly gates neck... i've got the first in a chambered les paul and had the latter in an ibanez SA (actually heavier that the gibson), but the PG was very warm, much more that the mule (that has got a woody, clear and very articulate sound - great but not what you're after!

really!! ive found my PG blues neck pick up to be very very thin and reedy sounding, when selected on its own the volume just drops away compaired to the bridge.

Maybe give Tim a call?

My natural inclination is Mules, but have a look at Jeff Makor's recent Abraxas thread http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=17181.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=17181.0).

My understanding of your description of what you want from the neck, and then his about what the Abraxas neck does for him (and HTH), seem to maybe fit with each other?

Another thought, maybe...  :D

That thread is a bit of an eye-opener, finally gave me an idea what the Abraxas is all about.  I had a Crawler set but wasn't 100% keen on them, the Abraxas sounds like it has similar power but a sweeter sound.

The Abraxas Express seems to finally be building a head of steam, after all those years in the sidings!

Yeah, and I can see it now: before the year is out, a bunch of us will have new guitars we're not currently planning on, all with Abraxus pups in...

The GAS goes on and on...

Glad you got it sorted anyway :D

i ordered the calibrated Abraxas set last Tuesday afternoon after speaking to Tim, guess what? they came Saturday! beat that for service.anyway i went straight up to Joe the repair guy in Birmingham,my Tokai LP needed a a restring & fret polish after the friday night gig,,i expected a week wait,he said ill get the pickups in today for you,WOW so i went back at 4.again fantastic service.took it straight to the studio.
The PG blues i had in were great but like i said i wanted a bit more.... fatness, a bit more juice..and oh god these pickups have got it, in aces,,when i picked it up Joe said " they are a lot louder" he wasnt wrong, with my amp just on the edge of overdrive they are glorious, dig in and the response is amazing, you know that feeling in your stomach when you hit the sweet spot, well its there all the time.no need for a pedal now, i can do it all off the volume knob,,,the tone is like honey, real hot dripping honey,,we are playing in Reddich this thursday,i cant wait...
Thanks to Tim,Joe and you guys for all the advice last week.
Ive took a trip to Abraxas,i ant never coming back...
