Hi!
I feel I could use a new guitar, but I am running into some problems with that.
I am looking for a guitar with good playability, but a chunky neck.
For example I really like the Ibanez Xiphos, the Dean Mustaine V and many ESPs, but they all have these narrow & slim necks. Whenever I touch my Gibson SG the neck just feels better (it's the fatter type on the SG standard).
Now unfortunately there are few good-playing guitars with fat necks around - there seems to be only the Gibsons or Fenders.
Here are some of the specs I'm looking for:
- neck through or set neck
- nut preferrably 43mm or more
- thick neck, U-shape
- body shape either SG-slike, Les-Paul like or more metal-looking.
- neck radius not too flat (14" or less)
I am thinking about about a Flying V at the moment, but no store in Birmingham seems to have one. I like the new Goldtop LesPaul, but I already have a similar looking ESP, so I'd rather look for something else.
So if you have some suggestions about what I should check out, please tell me. Though I am not strictly limited in my budget very much, I would prefer not ending up with the Joe Bonamassa LP, but rather something "below" 1000£.

Peavey make metal guitars with thick necks.
-
I really like Fender Strats and Gibsons because of their thick necks. For your budget you could probably pick up a really nice Gibson LP or SG for under £1000. Fender strats are also worth looking into, you could definitely get a decent new one that is under your budget.
I always advise when people are looking to get a new guitar is play as many as possible. Go into a music store and play the guitars that you like and fit your budget and find out what feels right in your hands.

I think Feline has his Lion cub on sale?
It its a decent sized neck, a bit small for me. Sounds great though

I saw that on the Feline site the other day. That guitar looks great! (as do all Feline lion's)
If only I had the money!

PRS SE's? Chunky necks, good build... cheap enough for you to upgrade pick ups.
-
Don't Schecters do thick necks?
-
PRS Mira in black?
Hmmm might not be very metal though ...
Explorer maybe?

The neck's not really very big either, even if you get the Regular shape.
It can look a bit metal though - quite similar to the Schecter the bloke from A7X plays (if A7X are indeed "metal", I try to avoid the definitions game  ).

I think you should look for a nice SG variant. Because SG are awesome.

The Schecter Blackjack ATX or the Loomis sig are amazing to play and have pretty beefy necks.

+1
I had a Santana SE that had a neck like baseball bat, SE's are readily available at really reasonable prices s/h. The only thing I didn't like was single volume and tone. Think they're all like that with the exception of the Tremonti SE.
-
I can sell you my Singlecut SE at a good price. It's a great guitar, and indeed the neck is big, gives good tonal balance. It really is a good one and served me well for long.

Dude, I reckon it might be worth checking out a Fernandes Ravelle. Looks pretty metal and it's got a big chunky neck on it; at least, it feels that way to me. Big, beefy sound too.

Thanks everybody for your advice. Meanwhile I have decided that I want a Flying V type guitar.
So I went to PMT in Birmingham - worst store ever. They never have what I am looking for.
Fairdealmusic is much betterl, they have great guitars IMO, but no Gibsons.
I really want to try the classic Gibson V, it seems to be what I want; the nut is aprox. 43mm, the neck profile is a bit rounded and not superflat and the neck is thin but still ok.
However, the only V I found in stores here were some hideous Dean thingies and some semi-goodlooking ESP/LTD ones.

Sould point out that they all have BKPs in them
Judas Priest style SG has Painkillers
Parana Explorer has old spec Holy Divers
Lion cub has Alnico 5 Mule in the bridge (neck pickup is currently Duncan Jazz, but could be swapped)
