Title: Just back from The Black Crowes
Post by: AndyR on May 18, 2009, 12:15:58 AM
Not usually on this late, but I suddenly had to transfer all my Black Crowes albums onto my mp3 player for our holiday...

We've just got back from seeing them at Brixton Academy.

What a band!! They still got it :D

I've seen them before, but the missus hadn't. I was worried they might not be as good as I was bigging them up to be, but we're both very happy bunnies now :D

Off to cornwall at the crack of dawn for a week now of no work (YEAH!! at last), no music (er, maybe), and loads of eating, drinking, walking, holding hands, talking to each other and putting our feet up...

See ya next weekend folks!

Have a good time :D

Blackcrowes are the best live band I've ever seen, did they have the female singers?

Good stuff - I really want to see the Black Crowes!

Where are you going in Cornwall? Not expecting a response for at least a week though!

The Black Crowes are seriously one of the best live bands out there. Still prefer the band with Marc Ford  though.

Glad you & the missus enjoyed it

I saw them at Brixton in 01 when Audley Freed was with them. They are a great live band. Noel Gallagher gate crashed that gig, came on stage and was boo'd.

I wish I'd know they were playing, I'd have loved to have seen them again.

Audley kicked ass with the band, but Rich never let him off the hook

Audley is a great player. Did you see them on Jools Hollands show when they were over for that tour? That was a good bit of TV.

Whats the name of the bands he was in?

I was in Cornwall a month or so ago.  Think Watergate Bay is one of my favorite places on earth.

Could never really get into the Black Crows, tried a few times, but they don't quite go up my flagpole.  Maybe time to give them another go.  Any albums which are good for a beginer?

It is a stunning place isn't it.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion is great album of theirs.

Never been to Watergate Bay - I always go to Lamorna, right down by Lands End, nowhere near as touristy and very, very relaxing. Porthferris Cove has got to be one of the nicest beaches to visit - and it's dog friendly.

As for The Black Crowes I thoroughly recommend Amorica. Conspiracy, Wiser Time and Gone are particular favourites of mine.

Johnny - remember this link up a while ago on Audley Freed, I certainly feel no shame in dragging it back up!

Awesome.

My personal order is this

Amorica - for already quality of song writing & muscianship, Rich (Robinson) & Marc (Ford) have the 'ancient form of weaving' thing going on, on here & Ed Harsch's keys on descending or so beautiful that is makes me cry
Southern harmony & musical companion - the build upto Amorica, but some classic rock n roll on there. Remedy is dirty blues as it was meant to be & Thorn in my side lead to some of the greatest jams I've ever heard
Shake your money maker - pure blues/rock n roll. Hard to handle is obviously the hit (and the solo is not Jeff Cease as some say, but apparently one of the producers).
3 snakes & one charm - or the drug years as it was known. Great playing but just so outta left field it makes it somewhat hard to enjoy., though Girl from a pawnshop isa lovely liltting ballad with a sick solo
Warpaint - The crowes come back & admit that they're older. Luther Dickinson (Mississipi allstars) steps into the breach to fill the lead guitar role & does a fine job. The brothers start playing alt country but it's so good that you forgive them & just enjoy the ride, walk believer walk kicks a significant amount of ass
Lions - now this was a step in different direction, Audley played on about 3 songs & didn't get a chance to shine, but there was potentional there. Rich plays all guitars & you can tell! Craig Ross guests on 1 song
By your side - the were forced at gunpoint to be some kind of fake/glammy let's be hippy rock band. Again you can tell that there is some basic cracking songs there, but it just doesn't particularly shine, though has a great song called 'Horsehead' on there ;)

For crossover in Led Zeppelin territory, Jimmy Page & The Black crowes - live album is brilliant, Chris Robinson has the voice to pull this off & a 3 guitar line up (Rich Robinson, Audley Freed  & Jimmy PAge) do the songs more than justice, try getting the original internet version of the album...it just seems to sound & flow better

Sorry guys didn't mean to post an essay, but take what you can from it

I'm sure I've been to pothferris.  Have you been to Porthcurno - lovely beach, next to the Minak.

Been looking for a job down there for a while, but no luck yet  :(

I remember that thread Ian, very good link  :D

Anyone been to Zennor? I stayed there in a hostel a couple of years ago. That was a lovely quiet spot. Fantastic 14 century pub!

Yeah - Porthcurno is great although a little too busy sometimes. Porthferris is the beach where you have to zig zag down the cliff face for about 20 mins and then cross over a stream. Very secluded and not many people go there.

Love the minak as well - we went to see some shakespeare production last year and my favourite moment was watching the sun setting on the sea. Beautiful view, I must have been watching it for a while as I lost track of what was happening on stage.

Apologies for going off thread!

Wouldn't worry, he's on holiday.

I've seen too much Shakespeare - Mr's TM works for the RSC, so gets cheap tickets

Anything but Lions, that is a piss poor album

Lickin' is a cracker though. No pun.... Seriously it is a great tune with good use of a pickup selector switch.
Greasy Grass River is a good one from that album too.
I love The Black Crowes, I think they're the mutts nutts.
I want to go and see them again!

Anyone been to Port Quin, nr Port Issac?

We were in St Ives - the missus's last employers (she's a nanny) have a place down there, and we get to stay there for free because she's fab :D

Interesting to see the differing tastes for the Black Crowes albums. I took them all with me and had a good ole listen.

I'm afraid I just can't really get into Amorica as an album, and I agree over the Lions views - "coupla good songs but..."

I personally really liked By Your Side when it came out  - but it's not one I choose a lot.

I like the live album, but I found it doesn't really work too well in headphones - the guitars are too separate for my taste. Haven't listened to it in ages, but I suspect I prefer the Live at the Greek Jimmy Page album.

My own favourites are Southern Harmony and Three Snakes.

It was a fine, fine gig last week - but do you know what?!!! No Sting Me, and... NO Remedy!!! :o

Otherwise, everything in place as it should be :D

That's where we normally go.  Had more than a few bevvies in the Sloop.

The missus did a placement at the Tate a while back.
