Title: Two Rock amps
Post by: Lew on May 18, 2009, 04:57:46 AM
Some pics of the inside of these expensive amps made it on TGP in a truly epic thread.

These things cost like 3-10k?!

Hmm.  Looks a bit messy to me!

If you want a Dumble-type amp, get a (superbly built) Ceriatone clone for a bargain price!

+1 - From Martin or direct from Nik. I was on the point of getting one before the £ divebombed - they are priced in dollars  :(

Lots of tweaks available (on the Ceriatone forum) to get the sound you're after.

After working with decrepit military equipment, massive caps make me very wary  That ceriatone looks really nice, though

Here's a picture of the inside of an original Dumble Overdrive Special (Two Rock and Ceriatine ODS are based on Dumble design). Apparently this is Larry Carlton's. The black residue on some of the components is the remains of the 'goop' that Dumble used to cover some of his amps with to discourage copies! Although the wiring doesn't look particularly neat Dumble was apparently fanatical where he placed his wires and components. He always used 'flying' wiring for the valve heaters, unlike the heater wiring tucked into the corner of the chassis in the Two Rock and Ceriatone. Not sure how much was this myth or a load of ****ocks.

Oops - sorry can't use the picture

I'd want a neater amp with more tlc gone into it for the price Two Rocks fetch.  Having said that, I doubt it affects the tone - Two Rock have a great reputation for tone and I know my own experimental chassis looks like shite, but sounds like angels gargling nectar.

Sorry, but if this clip is anything like an accurate representation of how one sounds then you're just plain WRONG.

the clean/breaking up tones on the Two Rock sounded great, wasn't keen on the OD tone but that might just have been the way they had it tuned in.

Better demo of OD tone of the Two Rock by Joe Bonamassa on this one at 2.12.
