Title: Yet Another Stupid "Which Pickup?" Thread...(sorry)
Post by: Copperhead on May 18, 2009, 11:39:41 PM
Short and sweet:
Swamp ash body, maple/pau ferro neck, Floyd. Original plan was CS neck, NB bridge. LOVE the NB, HATE the CS, now it has a MQ neck, all good..........

NEW GUITAR:
Mahogany Strat, maple/maple neck, hardtail string-through. I have a BKP91 for the neck. NB in the bridge again, or something else?
Thanks.

How does the guitar sound (acoustically) compared to the old guitar? It's hard to determine just from specs. If they're of comparable brightness, I would probably get another NB. If the new one is much darker, I'd be thinking twice, as I don't think NBs work in dark guitars. Also, NBs thicken up the tone of floyd-ed guitars, but I think string-thru increases the risk of mud.

Is it 25.5" scale? I don't think it's easy to get a muddy tone with a maple neck with that scale...
If you like NB a lot you can stick with it once more, but could be nice to try something different, to other kind of tones (if you feel you need, if don't, keep on it)...

What do YOU think about?

Well, I really, really, like the NB. Strat is not built yet. I am expecting darker and thicker tone with the mahogany body, heavy brass bridge and string through.

BTW - the pau ferro board on the maple/ash guitar really tames the potential for twangy bass syndrome. This one is perfect in tone and I wouldn't change a thing.

The Strat build will have an on/on/on mini toggle for coil split and out of phase, and just one each tone and volume, and a 3-way Strat blade switch.
So we also want to split nicely with the 91 in the neck. I will get lots of tone options going on with the switching. My fear is that the NB together with the 91 might get too muddy in the bass to low mids?
Ceramic NB maybe??

There are people who have put Nailbombs in an LP. Your new strat will most probably be darker than the first one, but the 25.5 scale length and maple neck do tighten and brighten the tone, like Fernando said. If it was an all-mahogany guitar, I would probably vote against the alnico nailbomb. Now I'm not sure.

The big question is..what are you looking for in this guitar, soundwise?

'K - What's going to split nicer, NB or RY?

You probably won't like the idea, but try the NB in the new project, and I bet a HD would be great for the swamp ash

Probably the NB.

I like bright, but there is such a thing as too bright. For example, CS in the neck of the ash/maple Tele was too bright.
I'm planning on 500k pots and a .022mfd cap.
I'm this close to ordering the NB. In the Tele, it sound great in the middle switch position with the MQ neck. How do you think the HD would fare in the same circumstance?
