I was growing increasingly unhappy with my Fender Mexican Deluxe strat, the neck didn't feel right and it wasn't very comfortable to play. I have been interested in the Road Worn series since Fender brought them out at the beginning of the year so I took my old Mexican strat down to the store to try one out and maybe trade in for it.
Well the Road Worn strats do sound great and it really did feel worn in, but I thought the relicing was just really not authentic looking at all! The aged bridge, pots, the headstock and back of the neck were done well, but I thought the relicing on the body was done pretty poorly and made the guitar look kinda cheap. I'm not taking anything away from the sound of the guitar though because it did sound really great, I played a sunburst 50's one and it did have a really nice sound.
In the end I walked out with one of the new American Standard strats which actually worked out cheaper than the Road Worn strat would have been! The American strats do feel a lot nicer and overall is a better quality instrument to the Mexican made ones. The pickups are a little bit weak though, so I think I'm going to swap them out for some Irish Tours. It's a sunburst American Standard with a rosewood fingerboard, great for getting Rory Gallagher and Stevie Ray Vaughn type tones, which is what I'm going for on this strat.

I wasn't that impressed with them either. I liked the tone but that was it. It was uncomfortable to play, fretboard was way too dry, the aged pick guard felt weird and the fret ends werent great either. Not worth the money to me.

The standard American ones are definatley better in quality. The Roan worn ones don't look authentic to me at all.

How? :o
Cool!
-
We had a nice one in a week or two ago
Liked the feel of the thin paint - not unlike ne of the highways, but nicer somehow
Aging was a bit cliche, but did feel cool
-
I've been able to play with a mexican strat and a US standard, and there is no contest, the US standard is way better.
-
I quite like shitety looking fake aging, lol. Don't know why.
-
I think the new American Series Strat plays great. I liked the playability more than the roadworn and even the eric johnson sig series I A/B tested it against
-
I have played one( a 1960's version) and it felt great but like you, I found the finish to be a little tacky looking which was a shame because I wanted to like it. It'll be interesting to see what you decide regarding pickups.

We've got IT's in a fender strat, sounds awsome :)

People who have only seen fender relics and road worns think the wear on my 30 year old Yamaha looks fake.

I was in Glasgow yesterday and picked up a set of Irish Tours for my American standard. Can't wait to put them in! :D

Guitar Guitar?
I was in Edinburgh and tried out the 60s roadworn through the Vox AC4TV. Great combination (my mate actually bought the amp), thought the strat was very nice, although i wasn't too sure about the relicing. I've often heard people say they like the necks better because they are unfinished, but i actually found it quite uncomfortable.

Yes it was in Guitar Guitar. Had a nice chat with one of the guys in there about BKP's, apparantly he uses them in his guitars too.

What was the AC4TV like? I've not managed to see one yet, and I really shouldn't be buying an amp, but...
I haven't tried a 60s RW strat, although I have seen one in a window. I wasn't too keen on what it looked like, mainly the scratchplate I think (but I'd probably be putting my IT scratchplate in there anyway, and getting a set of MMs on a BKP plate for going in the current strat...). However, I have played a 50s RW tele, and that felt extremely nice. My worry with trying the 60s strat is that it will feel as good, and the fact that it's a strat, sunburst, rosewood board, would push me over the edge!
-
I couldn't agree with you more Andy! It would've sent me over the edge had it been a sunburst. It was a very nice guitar. The big frets were nice too!
As for the ac4, I took my 339 over to my mates house yesterday to give it a shot hoping I would hate it. I'm afraid I prefer it to my TT and my champion 600. The 1/4 watt can he a bit boxy at times, so the 1 watt is the one to use. As for the 4 watt. Very loud, with that classic vox 'chime'.
I want one!

Oh dear...
the GAS...

Wow! You may have just cost us all a lot of money...

Trying to keep vox afloat in these difficult times :P

Took my Strat and Irish Tours around to the tech guy for my bands house this morning and asked if he could fit them in for me, he phoned me up this afternoon to let me know they are done, so I will pick it up tomorrow morning. Can't wait to hear how they sound! :D

Great! :D
