Spent the day at a mate's yesterday who has a fair collection of JV Strats and a Tele - he also has an Orville By Gibson Les Paul Std - but what blew me away was his Yamaha SG2000 - an original one - what a fantastic guitar! Completely stock but what a sound!
Bad news though - it has given me GAS and they are not cheap....
-
Nice but charge silly money for these now

They are great... I got a pimped up 3000 model and I love it! I just put the stock pick ups back in they are sooooo good.... truely great guitars.

It's worth persevering and getting an SG2000.
It's an awesome guitar, and mine has almost become my go to guitar - over my LP.
They are expensive but it's one of those guitars that you could safely buy without playing it first, such is the incredible build quality that it has.

I remember those first time around  as being stonking guitars. At the time (ie late 70's) I think it was the SG series which really scared the wotsit out of Gibson - whose QC was not the highest at that time - and which led to the US manufacturers trying to put the Japanese out of the business through all the lawsuits. Obviously, they couldn't touch the Yam SG series because they weren't a copy - which made them all the better.
I never owned one - pocket money wouldn't stretch to one back then! - but did play a couple and have very good memories of them. Rock solid build, sustain slightly longer than forever, good range of sounds with the coil taps.
Originals in decent condition will fetch £600+ on evilBay, and there aren't many around without scratches, dents, dings and tarnishing. Paintwork tends to go cloudy too. There's an eBayer based in Japan who lists them quite regularly (eBay name: Chingo-something) - I've got stuff from him and his service is excellent.
Heavy guitars too :D

they are good and there are still potential bargains out there - just not as many as there was... i actually think the current prices are pretty reasonable for what you get
-
I am looking out for one via Yahoo Japan auction site but even there they are expensive - you are looking at a landed cost of over £700 (including shipping, taxes, duty etc) - and there are not many about - fair few SG1000s but not many SG2000. May be easier to keep an eye on the Bay....

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I'd love one but they're just too heavy for me. :(
LPs seem to vary enormously in weight, anywhere from 8 to 12 pounds, but I've never heard of an SG2000 that was anything less than a boat anchor!
-
In that case I must have a REALLY heavy Les Paul 'cos the SG2000 was definitely lighter than my LP! I must weigh it one day...
We could have a "How heavy is your Les Paul?" poll!

Mine weighs less than the L.P customs I've picked up of late with the exception of the '57 R.I I had. I don't think the strap button position help regarding how heavy they feel whilst standing. Still, I love 'em!

Mine's 9.5 Lbs... allegedly

I have a seventies SG400 myself. Loaded with Crawlers.
Most of you will know it, there's loads of pics of it scattered around this board.

Emmmm take a hollowed out LP standard and fill with lead shoy then leave it on a guitar stand amd watch the fun as people go to try it
