Title: NAD (Almost)!
Post by: Stevepage on May 30, 2009, 05:10:08 PM
Went to Giggear in Harlow today and took along my Carvin. I went there last week and tried out the Randall T2, loved it then. Then I loved it even more with my own guitar.

The cleans on it are I think better than the Laney VH100R I used to own. The crunch and boost channels are just amazing. Very tight, chuggy but not muddy. Lead tones are great and even has a good blues rock kind of tone with the gain down. I like to think of it as a JCM800 but more aggressive and more versatile.

I put a deposit on it and I get it next month as I'm going away on holiday very soon, so I'm getting it when I get back  :D

Yeah that's the V2 you're thinking of. The V2 has a valve clean and boost channel but has a solid state crunch channel + graphic eq.

The T2 has an all valve preamp and simple features as you can see.

I've seen quite a few bands use these amps live, and they sounded awesome!

What would be a good cab to go with the T2?

The Randall cab that I played with the T2 sounded cool but it was about £600+ which is a little bit much for me.

I was looking at Orange 2 x 12's and 4 x 12's as the EVH 5153 sounded great through the 2 x 12. But any other suggestions?

I've got a Marshall 8412 at the moment which is ok, but it's time to get a better cab to get the best sound possible.

That is an interesting looking amp! You're going to Florida -- that's only about 1,200 miles from me. Pop up and say hello! :)

Well I got impatient, so I went back today and bought it. It's awesome though it's made me realise just how lifeless the bridge humbucker on my Carvin is. So after my holiday I'll be replacing it, probably with something like a Nailbomb or Cold Sweat.

I love Orange cabs, they're yummy.

Nice dude! I remember trying a V2 with the graphic eq on it and that was awesome! You'll have a lot of fun with that one mate, I have tried the Randall range and the T2 and V2 really made me salivate, definitely my backup-plan amps if I don't manage to get a Powerball or Cobra.  :D

I've owned a Powerball and seriously think the Randall is the bettter of the two. Though it doesn't have as many features as the Powerball, the Randall makes up for it. I find it much clearer sounding and has more 'oomph' in its tone.

As for the Cobra I'm not sure, but I've heard one of my favourite bands use them (Biomechanical a few years ago) and they sounded awesome.

It's the old 8000 series valvestate cab. It's good for low volume playing or a bit loud but it doesn't great sound when really turned up.
