OK so he's a monster player.....

Sounds OK, but nothing special to me. Rather a bit thin and one-dimensional to be honest.

That's what I was thinking.
-
erm bit demo...lifeless to me(To quote above "Sounds OK, but nothing special to me. Rather a bit thin and one-dimensional to be honest.")
-
Hey,the guy is playing straight from the HTDual with some drummachine etc. So,i find it rather good (his tone,i mean..) :)
-
sounds like a cruddy processor to me.... oh wait, it is!!
-
I'm still confused by the "monster player" part...
-
i quite liked the clip to be honest.
-
I like my HT dual..don't like DI out bit...and hate the clip

hard to tell about the DI from the clip due to the youtube-ness, 'hate' is a strong word, but take your point. as i say, i quite enjoyed the clip.
-
Yeah I'm really not a fan. I dont like the line out of my HT5 either, through headphones its just as bad as when I try to record it!
-
i wonder how it would sound with a line-out and impulse response. i've been meaning to try impulses for a while
-
still not good better through amp..then record..or into comp through amp sim etc record
-
I liked it too, couldn't say why though

i'm glad someone else does! :)
it would be interesting to try one through my marshall 20/20 power amp i think
-
it was a passable tone - suited that 'wanky guitar playing' style.
-
Dunno about the tone - it's only a home-recorded YouTube vid after all - and I couldn't give a sh!t whether he "qualifies" as a "monster player" or not  . But I liked the tune.
-
I thought it sounded nice for the rhythm-y bit at the beginning, but not so much for the lead... a good effort though, 6/10... 7/10 for it being DI'd though.
-
wasn't overly fussed on the tone, quite liked the tune and the playing though.

My thoughts too :)

Well, I guess this raises the question- define 'wanky guitar playing'?
When does the combination of technical ability and a good tune become wanky- or is it nothing to do with this- perhaps if he had a goatie beard and played a black angular guitar it'd be OK and cool. ...?
-
[and played a black angular guitar it'd be OK and cool. ...?
everyone knows white angular guitars sound better..

I have a goatee beard, a black not-very-angular guitar but can't play for toffee. Epic fail, I guess. :(
To me, "wanky guitar playing" sounds like a technical exercise and doesn't have a discernible melody. So I wouldn't really call this guy's playing wanky.
-
'wanky guitar playing' = Vai...satriani (eugenes' trick bag...so bored of hearing that when people are testing guitars) style..both have good moments as well I will add
-
hahaha some guy posted a comment on that video comparing him to govan !!! haha
-
Sounded really artificial to me.

agreed. it's going to be different for different people, of course, for some people any solos at all qualifies as "wanky", while for others unless they're running through arpeggios for 10 minutes, with nothing else, it's fine. Just depends on what you like, i guess.
-
i don't like the tone, very ordinary and without dynamics at all...
the tune is not bad (still a bit of ordinary satrianeries...) and the guy is still several times better than me but i wouldn't call him "monster"... :)

maybe for some people - his image his no bearing on my comments at all. it was that standard cheesy instrumental rock playing that bores the tits off me and typically has a flat generic tone.
for the record, I like some metal players that would be considered 'wanky' by some, though they have soul or that something you can't quite put your finger on that makes them special. Marty Friedman is one of those guys, so are the Slayer axemen.
I like lots of different music though, and metal is just the tip of the iceberg.

To sum it up....
He's a fancier player than me, but I can get a better tone and vibe with a Tele or strat direct into any valve amp with my digital camera recording the audio....and so can most of the guys on this forum....
:D
