Title: Anyone going to LIMS?
Post by: Groove Cartel on June 04, 2009, 10:39:26 PM
Hi,

Are any of you guys popping along to the London International Music Show at Excel next weekend?

If you are, please call in on the Vanquish Guitars stand for a chat and to try some really cool, hand made British guitars. Oli Brown will also be performing regular demo's on his signature guitar, I may play a bit too! Vanquish also use various matched sets of BKP's plus custom wound sets.

Check out www.vanquishsounds.com for more details.

Cheers

It's utter stupidity to make it the same weekend as Download and Isle of Wight Festivals

As ever there will be engineering works on the tube making access harder still for some people

AND Rock Ness.

Which has been near catastrophic for my my work, with two of us at download, three of us playing at Rock Ness and a few going down to LIMS. Ah well, I got my holidays in early!

I keep wondering if there is some kind of strategy to reduce the popularity of the Guitar section of the show, they seem to be going out of their way to screw up their own show, they MUST know that they are up against other events, they MUST know that preventing sales at the show will mean vendors won't turn up, particularly the smaller ones, but Gibson is conspicuous by it's absence as well.

I think they want to down scale it.

Sadly not this year
Last year I decided to take a year out and see what I thought about the changes to the show
The big increase in the cost of the show (25% up) last year had me rethinking it as well as the not allowed to sell rule
When I realised that they put it up against Download/IOW festivals last year I was seriously worried about the effect on attendance
I went along two days and to be fair it was like a ghost town on both days - dont know how the organisers came up with the high attendance figures they had - sure didnt look that way to me

I was sorely tempted to go back  this year as an exhibitor - especially as they offered some nice price stands for small luthiers, but the repeated clash of dates with big festivals made me wonder if the poor attendance I witnessed would be repeated this year - especially with so many people feeling the pinch financially

I will be going along to the show twice this year - Thursday and Sunday (transport permitting) to gauge attendance (and enjoy the show too)

I do want to do the show next year - especially if I have a chance to get the 20th anniversary models out for 2010, but I want to speak to the organisers about the stupid dates clash before diving in.
I also want to clarify issues about being able to sell small items like t shirts and strings or take deposits on stuff to be shipped out after the show - (or get handed over to the buyer in the car park more likely)

People are always welcome to visit me here if they want to try anything out till then

By The Way - transport news
There is a 3 day tube strike across the entire tube system from Tues-Thursday that week

On the Saturday and Sunday - both the Victoria Line tube and the Jubilee Line will be shut down for planned maintenance
I guess there will be a dead slow bus replacement running,

So if you have to travel to the Show - plan ahead with that in mind

i'll be there.

didnt see gibson or fender on the list nor some other companies i like. the number of stalls on the floor plan is much less and each has a larger area to sell. it also looks like a large amount of the floor sections are for several guitar shops.

I saw PRS were on the list but I couldnt see them on the floor plan.

It's at Exel, isn't it?

Good DLR service but yes, Jubilee line's down at the weekend so only sensible interchange to get on is Bank (as Canary Wharf & Canning Town interchanges are on the Jubilee). Waterloo & City line's good from Waterloo but it doesn't run on Sundays and closes 8ish on Saturday. From the East you can get on at Stratford, South Lewisham/Greenwich (10 mins from London Bridge stn) but otherwise that's it.

PITA, really.

I'm not a talking tube map, honest, I just live out that way & the whole engineering work thing is driving me mad.

As for the strike... DLR isn't usually affected but getting across town is an absolute bitch as everything else is really busy. You can be creative & get a boat from London Bridge/Waterloo to Canary Wharf, then DLR but even that'll have a lot more people travelling on it.

Although I have always been a fan of Vai, given the current economic climate I can't justify £180..... has anyone read the list of exclusions to his show! 'please do not speak to Steve' etc.

Anyway, please pop along to the Vanquish stand and say hello, all their guitars have BKP's in and all are available to try.

Hopefully see you over the weekend, just ask for Marcus

I went to the LIMS today for the trade day

I did enjoy being there and spoke to a number of people that I was keen to catch up with

BUT it was empty- there were so few exhibitors that large parts of the hall were empty

Even with big gaps between stands/wide aisles there were big open spaces with no stands
There were very few UK makers
VAnquish, ME Guitars and Rob Williams all caught my eye
But....
No Fender-
no Gibson -
No BC Rich -
No dean-
No Vigier
No BKP!
No Feline (I already knew this one)
No Blackmachine
No Gus Guitars
No Sims Custom

Ibanez had a good stand, as did Peavey

But I do wonder how I would have felt if I'd had to pay to get in....

thanks for the heads up feline...
may give it a miss this year...
im sure vigier will be there as i contacted the uk distributor about a guitar yesterday and he claimed he was setting up his stand...

Well uni had ran out of tickets when i asked today, so it looks like i'll be going to lecture instead of LIMS... probably for the best really!

Was looking at this the other night, there is some stuff going on at Bank as well, might not be able to change there either. We are going to chance it and change at Bank, if not it will be back to Waterloo and an overland to Lewisham to pick up the DLR.

Maybe I just missed Vigier when I trolled round......

It's odd - I did enjoy myself and was good to catch up with people, but I cant see it carrying on in its current format

I find it odd that a lot of the changes that were made were to get the likes of Fender and Gibson etc to exhibit, and this year neither of them (and others) did leaving a wird half full feeling in the hall.

I feel that they are so desperately trying to make it a big corporate event - and look and feel like NAMM that they are losing the essense of what made it really great in past years.

It is a shame they cant roll the clock back and use Wembley again, which was a lot cheaper venue to hire.
Run it for 2 days only and ram the place full of guitar makers from all over the UK and abroad too.
MAke itinteresting and exciting for all concerned.

Had a good day at the IMS. It is like Jonathon says a lot smaller than previous years. Its a shame its gone that way as there are so many companys missing, however I still enjoyed it.
I had a go on two Vanquish guitars. They're gorgeous instruments and play really well. The ones I tried had a pair of MQ's which sound fantastic as always and a pair of Crawlers.
I sat in on a Q&A session with some guys from Sound on Sound which was great. Demo'd Superior Drummer which looks really good. Plus watched lots of demos of various recording software things. the demonstrators were knocking up tunes in minutes. Hopefully I may even be able to do that soon!

Edit, I had a go on a Moog guitar too. Its a mad thing. The infinite sustain is great fun, in a decent cranked amp it would be evil!!

I wasn't that impressed really. It was ok, but I won't go again unless I have enough money to snap up a bargain. PRS had some good deals on offer.

I was there again today
Yes - I missed the Vigier and also the Washburn/Randall stand last time - must have missed an aisle when going round

Again I enjoyed myself and bought a cool guitar strap from an Australian company called DSL - one with a lightning bolt on it
Really liked what they had on offer
They had some nice Lemmy/Motorhead Signature straps which looked cool
I'm not a Motorhead fan but liked the Iron Cross and Ace of Spades designs (typical Lemmy)

Think I allowed myself to have my guitar player head on rather than my businessman head and had some fun trying out a few guitars.

That was fun but ultimately what it reminded me was how much I love my own guitars.

But I did come home wanting to play guitar so it was a good show from that point of view alone

I will have to review my ideas about showing stuff next year as it is fun doing the show (wish it came without financial considerations)

I was a little shocked at how much smaller it felt. Even though it was half of the building, alot of that side was; the stage, shops like andertons/guitar village etc and up the other end, colleges and schools etc.. so basically it was much smaller.

i also thought the stands were more sparse. ie more spread out to pad it out a bit. its wierd how its changed in one year.

aside from that i had a good time. Lots of nice gear to try and hear.

I also thried the MQ and crawler vanquish guitars. They are very well made and sound great.

I thought the Rob williams guitars also look amazing. They are like the UK equivilent Suhr guitar i think.

The amps i liked were:

The Vox Night Train. Very impressed with the range of sounds from Jazz to dirty.
Blackstar. The new range are very good value. They were demoing the 200W one with Jamie Humphries. They had it with the dial set to 20W so it was epic at lower volumes with such versitility having 4 channels.
The nicest clean amp I heard was a little 1x12 two rock jet. Very bluesy and so warm.
Nicest Sustain and crunch by far came from an 18W Buddha super drive. The bass response on this little thing was amazing considering its size.

Also.. the show had a slight Max Power feel with quite a few women walking round in not much and on stands giving out leaflets. Not going to complain!

Met the PRS guy from the Youtube demo ads. He was demoing the PRS's each hour and Simon McBride who I really like was playing and was very good.

Also got a signature from Jim Marshall. He looked pretty old but was determined to please the fans and did a good job.

Diezel at Download?

I went Download Friday and this Saturday :lol:good times.

I lost a lot of respect for Vai at how much he charged + what has been said in this thread. That's quite sad.

It was my first time so I utterly loved it but my friends said last year was way better. I loved checking out all the small companies though, I think I do more than the big ones as I know what's going on with them most of the time anyway.

Highlights for me = playing an octave Mandolin + Harp; such wonderful sounding instruments, definitely going to get both in time. There was some Taylor acoustic in the middle section that had 1 pickup visible but under in it's body which produced one of the nicest clean tones I've ever heard and Organic guitars + the people on the stand were awesome! Don't know if anyone caught me living there for quite a while touchstyleing away but the guy was really friendly/shown me Piezos which I'd always wanted to try (And utterly loved) and upon me playing for a bit he said they were going for a fag break but that I could stay and play as long as I liked :lol:I briefly became a salesman.

So yeah, had a wonderful time! :)
