Hi,
I was on a pickup crusade like a year ago, got some quality replies here, but some unsuspecting things have changed since then and I ended up same as in the beginning - stock EMG is still in my guitar.
I will be getting some money in a month and I really think that it's not gonna slip out of my hands this time.
I will most probably buy a calibrated set of NBs, that seems the best idea in my eyes right now (at least for my needs).
What I have is an all mahogany 7 string guitar, with arch top body and only one pickup - for now it's an EMG707.
I wanna swap it for something else, but I also wanna route cavity for the neck pickup (not really, gonna give have some tech to do it instead).
What I want (or most accurate description) is that huge, tight enough, yet not "sterile" tone ( or should I say organic), with low mid grind, no sharp highs but also with jazzy cleans (lame description I know). Like that early 90s Death metal (so yeah, aggressive).
Now, I have figured out by now that NB cleans up well, but I can use the neck pickup for that, but I'll wire both of them series/parallel too. I will use it mainly through Peavey 6505, it will be the main amp for recording with my band's album that we are about to record in a few months. Maybe some Engl e530 in the future too.
So, keep in mind - it's all mahogany (bolt-on); tuned to ADGCFAD;
I want - tight (ala Death - TSOP maybe?), but not super tight like today's modern Death metal production; huge, aggressive, no chalk on blackboard, organic, but with jazzy cleans (that's why I'm gonna route cavity out for the neck pickup).
I know this is just words, but it's all I can made use of right now.
My main concern - will NB calibrated set do the job? (Considering its all mahogany, maybe a ceramic NB in the bridge? Or it's not necessary, 'cause I would like to retain some warmness too))
How much of a job needs to be done to route neck cavity out (EMG 707 is there at this moment)?

Methinks c-bomb for the bridge, maybe AV nailbomb for the neck. You'll need new pots too.

The nailbomb bridge didn't work at all in my all mahagony Flying V with Ebony board, high power alnico V just doesnt cut right through too much mahagony. The low E was muffled and unprecise and the overall sound was like there was a blanket over the sound - the same pickup sounds great in a Les Paul with maple cap or in an explorer with maple neck

Hi guys, newbie here...
I just had a set of nailbombs installed into my Ibanez S7320. (Much thanks for the recommendation Tim!) No mud at all. These are the A5 versions... Really open tone. Transparent, organic, and plenty of harmonics... Just like the label says. I was going for the Satriani sort of tone, and while the neck NB doesn't really sound that much like a PAF Joe, the whole set in particular works very well.
And yes, I'm also tuned down to ADGCFAD for the 7. Running on 11s. Full gain on my distortion pedals thru my Fender PRRI. no mud at all.
