Title: New Agile finally got BK'd
Post by: Denim n Leather on June 09, 2009, 04:10:29 PM
Put a calibrated set of Black Dogs into my new-ish Agile AL-2500 yesterday. My head is very congested today, and my ears are shot as a result, so I can't really comment on the fine points of the tone, but I can say this -- this guitar sustains F O R E V E R !!! The Black Dogs are also a lot less finicky than the Riff Raff in terms of what boost/fuzz I can use.

The Black Dog is pretty much the polar opposite of the Riff Raff.

Here's a pic:

The guitar on the left is Blue Meanie (AL-2800): Riff Raff bridge, Stormy Monday neck.

The guitar on the right is Size 8 (AL-2500): Calibrated Black Dog Set.

Friend of mine said the guitar looks like a bowling shoe and the name just stuck.

viking hat rulez 8)

i still like that bleached look.

its a pointless question - but which do you prefer - meany or size8?

edit 1:
and here is a question with point - the fit/finish/quality the same on both?

edit 2:
i quite fancy one of the goldtop models with p90s (A2000 / A3000), shame the don't have mapletops, even if thats historially accurate (AFAIK).

edit 3:
have you tried any 'vintage' les pauls? if so how do they compare to agile?

(i have a spare rebel yell and a plan)

Is that Vintage (the JHS, Trev Wilkinson brand) or vintage as in old?

And a (probably dumb) question from me:  did you keep any of the volume/tone controls working on this one Ben, or is it just pickups to switch to jack?

I have played a lot of the vintages.

And they are nice guitars but they still have that budget feel if you get what i mean.
A lot of the ones i have tried have had sharp edges on the frets as well.

My agile feels a lot better built the finish is superior and it plays just that bit nicer.

No real preference. I am naturally disposed to prefer Size 8 due to the fact that I prefer maple fingerboards, but they are very different animals when everything is taken into account. I've not lived with Size 8 long enough to figure out where it will fit into the scheme of things with Criss and Blue Meanie.

No, the 2800 is a touch better.

Can't say, haven't played either a 2000 or a 3000.

Not knowingly.

But Agiles are a pretty peculiar breed -- they don't have a compound radius fingerboard, weigh a tonne, and the neck heel is ridiculously thick. Still, they have a charm that I love.

Nice planks. As the Monet book has been commented upon, as has the helmet, I have little else to say except, neatly wound cables Ben.

Having spotted your rockband drums I just have to say that you should try out DTXmania it is much better if you enjoy the drumming.   8)

Nice Guitars DnL!

I want a zakk wylde epiphone LP just for the sake of having a maple fretboard on a LP. shame it's got all that fancy finish ;)

and yeah, the black dog rules. very transparent. I'm loving it more and more each day!

Awesome man. I am trying to sell a couple of pickups right now to help fund a Miracle Man set for my AL2500 Albino.

Sorry, didn't see this Q earlier.

For now the wiring is bog standard, but that will be changed soon.

Played the guitar last night @ rehearsal using: Black Dogs > Tommy Bolin fuzz > Splawn Quick Rod > Bogner 4x12. Very loud. Sounded great!

I know EXACTLY what you mean, I'm really picky about how the finish feels, and the trems are just.. Atrocious, in my opinion anyway. But everything else felt good for the price.

Never played one of these "Vintages", but I have the same Agile as D n' L and the quality is outstanding for the price. Fit and finish is damn good, fretwork is nice, nice low action. Damn thing came perfectly set up out of the box. I love it. Does way a friggin ton though. I just ordered a set of black open coil Miracle Men for mine. Should sound pretty pissed off.
