Title: 1 meg pots?
Post by: syr2012 on June 11, 2009, 05:49:04 PM
Hello all,
I'm doing some work on my Holydiver-equipped guitar, which would include replacing the five-way switch, adding a dpdt switch (either for coil split only or split and parallel), and replacing the sole pot on the guitar. I'm trying to decide if I should just add a new 500k or go for a 1 meg pot. Any suggestions?

I used a funky switching system on my holydiver, had a switch for parallel and split options. I hated it. Thought the tones were pretty unusable and not as good as the standard series wiring, which i love to bits.

The difference in pot will make the pickup brighter, whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, i prefer mine with a 500k pot.

I actually like the split sound, I find it to be pretty fat. I'm actually wondering what the parallel would sound like, I haven't heard a good parallel sound in... ever. I'm not expecting it to come close to its series sound, but just to be a bit different. dheim (in a different post) said the parallel sound in the neck sounded rather similar to its series, just thinner.
I read somewhere that there's a way to mod a pot when its value is too high, does anyone remember how to do that?

you can put a resistor in parallel - but the taper will also change.
