Post by: Ochaye on June 12, 2009, 08:07:58 PM
what are you guys using (when gigging)..it has been recommended that we use power conditioner strips* but the  actual cable length is usally 'bout two foot long!..it has also been recommended that we DON'T daisy chain the mofos!!....is there a nice simple/inexpensive pro extension strip out there?

*the type you would use with a hi fi or surround sound cinema kit or something

ps it's friday  :D

No live experience, but I'd just get a 2 or 4 way heavy duty wind up extention lead and plug the power conditioner into that.

Does anyone have any experience of these "power conditioner" strips? I'm not convinced that they'll actually help much.

I'm talking about this sort of thing opposed to say a Furman rackmount.

No, we are a bunch of thugs and we use the ordinary stuff-the sort of thing you'd buy from  any DIY shop.

We generally just use bog standard entension cables too. Haven't had any problems for years.

If you are having problems with noise and interference from your power source, then I'd do what Ailean suggests and just stick the short hi-fi power conditioner in the end of a long standard extension lead.

Only once do I remember playing anywhere with real noise problems from the power, and that was at a scout hut in the middle of nowhere, with an enormous, power hungry, stage lighting rig.  I'm fairly sure the lighting was the main problem as it was all running from the same extensions as the amps/PA etc

i use whatever is around.
ive debated investing in surge protectors and RCD's. but i haven't as yet.
I'm concerned with loosing power due to a bogus sound limiter that may damage my amp.
don't tend to play venues with those though.

a friend of mine had a problem with noise in his house and his amp breaking down a lot. he used a TSL.
in the end he started using a UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) used to keep computers running in the event of a power failure to clean his power and give a steady output from a battery.

Most UPS's have at least some form of power conditioning in them. I was looking at getting one but to power an amp you need an expensive UPS as you need one that can handle the power loadings in a complete failure situation or you could end up blowing your UPS.
