Title: Pickup height

I know this is down to personal preference to a degree and I also know that the closer they are to the strings, the louder, more distorted and more direct the sound will be. Likewise, the further away they are, the more open the sound is. Nevertheless, is there a height that I might use as a default position and work from there?
