Title: Not your average noob, I doubt you will have seen a post like this!
Post by: Wiesner on June 16, 2009, 10:03:35 PM
That was quite the topic name right there!

Anyway, hi I'm James, I'm new to the forum, this is my first post. I DEFINITELY intend on sticking around aswell, I'm not gonna be one of them noobs that take your advice and go away, then come back for more help!

Anyway I'll get to the point. I'm seeking advice on what pickups I should get (both neck and bridge) for my BC Rich Zombie. It's mahogany, and to be quite honest I don't understand all this business about quilted maple tops and all that. But I know the top isn't a solid colour. And I know the top will contribute towards to the tone.  I apologise if I'm talking absolute cr@p here.

I'm looking for a smooth sort of tone, something that won't make my solos and picking sound really... I don't even know how to describe it..  It's hardly a lack in gain or anything.. But.. I don't know... I guess it's just the MARSHALL I play through :P

I currently have a DiMarzio X2N in the bridge at the moment, and I don't think it's quite cutting it. And yes I know I can buy various pedals and that, but I'm trying to keep away from pedals as much as possible.

Oh yeah, I never mentioned, the music I play is obviously metal (with a BC Rich, I doubt it's anything else!)

And that's my post of rubbish for you all.
Again, my apologies if I'm talking cr@p, any help is appreciated.

James.

A set of Painkillers would be a good place to start in mahogany for metal.

Thanks for such a quick, helpful reply!
Any idea on where I can get prices from? I'm in the UK
Cheers again

I checked out your channel. I don't remember posting on any of those videos. Incase you're wandering, mine is 454james454 (sorry my videos are old and pants)  You can check your comments and stuff, but I honestly can't remember, if I have, then I apologise.

Thanks for the heads up by the way!

Okay, my bad -- very similar to an exchange I had to someone today thru Youtube.

I still say Nailbombs. :)

Nailbombs is a good choice, Can you name some guitarist/bands you want your tone to be similar to?

First...

Welcome to the board!

Second...

What reference tone/band do you aim for?

This is a reply to both Sebby and Afghan Dave:

Thanks for the welcome.  :D

The tone I am aiming for is quite hard to describe actually... I want it smooth (as said in the first post), but I still wanna hear some low end crunch, sort of like Meshuggah if you know what I mean? But when I turn the gain down a bit I want to be able to get still a nice smooth tone, but not as heavy, so I get a sort of..  I dunno how to describe it!

Rather than me talking cr@p, I'll tell you the bands I'm into, it may be easier.

Trivium
Meshuggah
Sikth
Death
Suffocation
Cannibal Corpse
All Shall Perish

These are a few of them anyway. Whether it makes this whole situation easier or not I don't know.

Thanks a lot for your time!

James.

From the bands you listed, it sounds like a ceramic Nailbomb might work.  I know Nolly has done some insane clips with his and he modeled his guitar after the guy from Sikth (I believe he even has a c-bomb himself)  Do a search in the Players room for ceramic nailbomb and check out Nolly's clips.  I know he has clips on youtube as well.....

On both counts! :D We get some strange questions here from time to time, but the vast majority are: "what pickup shall I put in X guitar?". X is extremely variable ;)

In posts like this, I'm always tempted to say something like:

STORMIE MUNDAYZ 4 DA BR00TAL MUTHALZ!!!

but that would be ridiculous, unhelpful, and unhumourous :|

I dunno, nobody here plays brewtalz.

Most of the guys here like doing jazz-lite impressions of their favorite Swedish death metal artists, you know, "mall metal made for vendettas," that kind of thing.

In the right guitar, with the right amp, I'd be willing to bet that even SMs could get really, truly nasty ;)

Yeah I've seen his clips, he's insane!
And thanks for the advice!

Painkillers are verry high mid heavey and very very clear and articulate, C bombs will have a smoother mid with a around the same output, For smooth tones with low end crunch both of these will work wonderfully.

Actually, I am sure you are right.

I am not a specialist in the brewtulz, but I get my best metal tones from vintage-voiced Strat single-coils and some PAFs, in either case, boosted to high heaven.

It's not like this is the 1970's, where it was hard to find an amp or pedal with enough gain.

The way you have described it them, make them sound perfect. Thankyou!

Looks like I'll be looking into a set of painkillers in the future!

Painkillers for sure - my mate had some in a LP Custom and they were to die for.
